Energy=Food

Its not a complicated formula.

Europe’s energy crisis is spreading to the fertilizer industry and threatening the meat sector, risking tighter food supplies and even higher prices. Norwegian fertilizer maker Yara International ASA on Friday said record-high gas prices are hurting its production, and by next week will have curtailed about 40 per cent of its European ammonia output capacity. That comes after CF Industries Holdings Inc. said it’s halting two U.K. plants due to soaring energy costs.

And you’re not going to believe this… a CO2 shortage.

As well as curbing output of fertilizers crucial to feeding the world’s growing population, plant closures could further tighten supplies of carbon dioxide that’s produced as a byproduct. The gas is used to stun poultry and and pigs, and any shortages would be another headache for farms and processors already suffering from a lack of workers. The food sector also relies on CO2 for use in packaging to extend the shelf life of products such as meat and vegetables.

    1. It’s already here. There’s drought in the west coast of North America. Farmers are selling off livestock for which they will be unable to feed. The big price increase has already started, and its showing up in “shrink-flation” (same price, smaller quantities). This is on top of the huge increase in the price of oil. Canada and Norway’s stupidity simply moves more market share to Persian Gulf nations and Russia.

      1. Re: shrinkflation. My local Safeway Store cannot sell their $94.00 pair of Rib Eye Steaks … so they have taken them out of the package and sliced each one into 1/4” thick “steaks” they are trying to sell for $24.00 ea!

Who would buy and attempt to cook a 1/4” thick “steak”?

        Steakman? What say you?

        1. USDA Choice Rib Eyes were ~$9.90/Lb in Tulsa a year ago. They are $12.90/Lb today. So up >30%. Best I can figure food overall is up about 20% since a year ago.

    2. It is happening here the price of fertilizer has sky rocketed and a carbon tax on the truck fuel to deliver it etc.

  1. Hey they want it and vote for a slow death by starvation. When we get to net zero fossil fuel, they will meet their depopulation goal of about 7B dead.
We will be back to agriculture and transportation using 1820 methods.
no Fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, or combines, trucks, trains or diesel powered ships. They are that stupid they vote for a slow death of starvation and cannibalism in the very end.

  2. Anything but a concerted effort to utilize fossil fuels while transitioning over the next century to primarily nuclear power will yield this as a start and end up like Watcher’s described green utopia.

  3. “Norwegian fertilizer maker Yara International ASA on Friday said record-high gas prices are hurting its production, and by next week will have curtailed about 40 per cent of its European ammonia output capacity.”

Wait a minute…I thought Norway was getting out of natural gas production and usage [all fossil fuels] and moving to green energy? Is this a case of the left hand (the one that spends the money) not knowing what the right hand (the one that makes the money) is doing?

    1. Politicians are shooting their golden geese and wondering why the price of everything keeps increasing as businesses finally say, ‘fuck this shit, tired of losing money off of Politicians promises.’

  4. I learned all about Ammonia fertilizer during my summer at the Klamath Falls hay ranch. Giant tanks of Ammonia tied to the irrigation pumps. Just don’t get too close to the Ammonia tanks. One small leak, and your lungs will be scarred for life.

But I imagine the VAST majority of the world’s population don’t know how crops are grown, let alone how fossil fuels are the reason we have essentially eliminated world hunger. Instead, the vast majority of the world’s population have been simply propagandized that fossil fuels Baaaaad MmmKay? And that we don’t need them.

Stupidity, and ignorance has a cost.

    1. And when the pumps lose power, the valves can stick open, and you pump tons of nitrates into the acquifier poisoning it for humans. — Blue Baby Syndrome.

It is a problem in the county north of us here in MN.

  5. Go Galt.
I cut my fall fertilizer by 25%; no sense pushing my farm to feed my enemies.
I’m not buying replacement cows this fall, just downsize the herd a bit, same reason.
Just purchased my spring fertilizer for the ‘what if’ scenario (possessed not ‘stored’ for me).
Depending how things go in the world, will look at putting all my crop land into grass this spring to cut inputs and wait this thing out.

  6. What happens when you stop chemical fertilizers and go all natural?
Just ask Sri Lanka, the entire country went organic in April this year:

    https://www.acsh.org/news/2021/09/09/all-organic-agriculture-sri-lanka-cripples-farmers-and-sparks-food-shortage-15796

    https://theprint.in/opinion/rajapaksas-experiment-with-organic-farming-in-sri-lanka-a-warning-to-developing-countries/731553/

Less than 6 moths and it is already a complete disaster for Sri Lanka (Ceylon).

How does it affect us? Might want to stock up on several spices now for the holidays that are mostly grown in Sri Lanka too.

    1. Manure certainly helps. Needs a big change in farming practices.
Land used to lay fallow in order to rest it, allow nutrients to rebuild. Obviously a big decrease in production, but so be it.

      1. There was a good agricultural reason for the Old Testament ruling of resting the land every seven years.

  7. Biden is a perfect example of the idiocy of the leftwing socialist. Ie Trudeau, Biden etc.
Democrat Insanity Peaks As Biden Shutters Pipelines Then Is Baffled When Gas Prices Rise
And who can forget this comment, from Biden’s campaign during the debates leading up to the 2020 election?

During the second Democratic debate on July 31, Dana Bash asked the former vice president “would there be any place for fossil fuels, including coal and fracking, in a Biden administration?”

“No, we would, we would work it out,” Biden responded. “We would make sure it’s eliminated and no more subsidies for either one of those, either — any fossil fuel.”

On March 15, during the eleventh and final democratic debate, Joe Biden said “no more subsidies for [the] fossil fuel industry. No more drilling on federal lands. No more drilling, including offshore. No ability for the oil industry to continue to drill, period.”

    1. Why would they care if food and gas cost 2, 3 ,5 ,10 times as much? Think they’ll feel their pocketbook being pinched, or are they too fat to notice?

  8. One brick at a time close to the foundation and it doesn’t take long for the structure of an interconnected economy to collapse. Everything in the economy is interconnected. Change or eliminate one component and others slow down or stop completely.

I decided to have a nice t-bone for a change at it cost just under twenty bucks! Even a fast food burger, fries and a pop will set you back fifteen bucks!!!

At my age (three score and twelve) I was expecting to enjoy a slow decline in our fortunes. However, our brilliant (TIC) progressives are accelerating our rush to a complete societal collapse into a feudal subsistence of Eloi and Trogs. This is very much like witnessing the end of the Roman Empire.

  9. CO2 used to stun poultry. That is so stupid that I’m at a loss for words. That has to have been forced on processors by the libtard state.
