As noted in the article the sample size on the survey is small but still if the people telling us that mass vaccination is the road back to normality aren’t themselves willing to behave normally after getting vaccinated what exactly is the point? As much as everyone goes on about how terrible the plague is most people want to go back to living their lives and complaining about more normal things again.
These survey results (n=28) are less a reflection of the respondents’ confidence in vaccines as much as they’re an informed and realistic reaction to the delta variant and the plateauing rate of vaccination rates in the US (survey fielded probably back in July-early Aug).
Prof. Bar-Zeev has it about right when he says, “In a place where most people are unvaccinated, or otherwise at high risk, and where there is active transmission, I should act more conservatively and with greater caution, even though I am protected from disease. In a place where most people are vaccinated, and there is low transmission, one can be more permissive.”

Over at PeakProsperity, Chris provided survey results from the US, asking respondents their political allegiance, age, and what percentage was likely to be hospitalized if you got COVID.
The overwhelming answer was 40% overall respondents thought there was a 50% chance of being hospitalized.
The reality is 1-2%. This is why the public is all fcked up and paranoid. They think it’s the Black Plague, where it’s more of a nastier than normal flu.

Sure, people are terrible at estimating real personal risk. That’s always been the case, even before covid.
But public health is focused on populations, and concerned as much with population-level risk as individual-level risk.
Take Florida. In the most recent wave, it was for a time averaging over 20K new cases per day. At a 1-2% hospitalization rate, that’s between 200-400 new in-patients daily. The average length of a hospital stay for a covid case is over 10 days — you can do the math to see how quickly health care system capacity can get inundated and stretched by thousands of patients. The average treatment cost of a hospitalized Covid case is ~USD$20,000 — you can do the math to see how much of a direct financial hit covid can exact.

In Alberta, which publishes pretty solid data on COVID cases, of the 1,151 people between the ages of 12-49 who have been hospitalized due to COVID in the past 4 months:
– 24 were fully vaccinated (2.1%),
– 51 were partially vaxxed (4.4%), and
– 1,076 were unvaccinated (93.4%), including 633 (54.9%) who were both unvaccinated and had no pre-existing conditions.
Of the 737 cases of COVID requiring ICU treatment (all ages), 242 (32.8%) had no pre-existing conditions.

@ Bill K: Actually, I’m opposed to domestic vaccine passports (international ones are probably inevitable, given other countries’ pandemic-era entry requirements that are beyond our influence). I’m also opposed to vaccine mandates, except in limited cases where a worker is directly involved in the physical care of a medically vulnerable person, and even then, refusal to be vaccinated should be met with a temporary change in duties/redeployment away from frontline positions rather than threats of termination.
I am in favour of individual responsibility, which for me means voluntary personal sacrifice, community solidarity, and prioritizing the rights and needs of others, more so than focusing on my own rights and freedoms.

In what sense? The current wave of infections despite being an early world leader in vaccination roll-out? I’d say a couple of things are at play:
(1) Israel was indeed a global COVID-19 vaccination trailblazer, owing to the deal they struck with Pfizer-BioNTech to start receiving doses as early as December 2020. But while the initial uptake rate was steep (20% fully vaxxed by end of January, 50% by mid-March), it started to plateau by mid-2021 and has ticked upward steadily but only slowly since, such that they’ve now fallen behind somewhat in terms of % population fully vaccinated (61%, versus, e.g., Spain at 74%, Canada at 68%, UK at 65%, Norway/Italy/France at 63%, etc.). So, in terms of population-level vaccine coverage, there are big gaps.
(2) Current evidence indicates that while COVID-19 vaccines can significantly reduce the risk of serious illness and death, their effects begin to wane after 4-6 months (though they don’t drop like a stone down to zero overnight). Since Israel started immunizing earlier than most countries, those initial vaccine recipients from Dec 2020/Jan 2021 would start to see waning protection by mid-summer. Relatedly, those initial vaccine recipients were older and/or medically at-risk people, so any declining vaccine efficacy will expose their innate vulnerabilities more readily.
(3) The delta variant didn’t really take hold in Israel until summer 2021 (<10% of all sequenced samples through end of May, 68% of all sequenced samples by mid-June).
The good news:
(1) Despite experiencing their highest rates of new cases since the pandemic began, hospitalization, ICU, and mortality rates all remain below their respective peaks during both the second wave (Sept 2020) and third wave (Jan 2021). The only major thing that has changed at a population scale is Israel between those earlier waves and the latest one is mass vaccination roll-out.

All in all, would it have been better if Israel had crushed the pandemic in spring 2021 through vaccines and never looked back since? Of course. Does the fact that they’ve experienced setbacks prove that vaccines don’t work? No, not according to any honest look at the full data available. Have they responded based on the changing facts on the ground? Yes. Are there still risks, domestically and globally? Yes. Is there nevertheless reason to hope that the pandemic can still be brought to heel, is Israel and elsewhere? Yes.

The waning efficacy of the vaccine is a reasonable and serious concern. The prospect of twice-annual booster shots through eternity was not what most people (including, I suspect, many zealous pro-vaxxers) signed up for. Factor into this that the covid vaccines do not prevent infection or spread; that its long-term risks are totally unknown; that its short- and middle-term risks are markedly higher than any other vaccine on the market; and that there’s no guarantee (all present indicators point in exactly the opposite direction, I would say) of a return to civilizational normalcy. If I try hard enough, I can wrap my head around the argument that progress on the pandemic is being stymied by scientifically illiterate cowards and sociopaths, but in order to do so I have to accept premises that are, I think, objectively suspect (I’m thinking in particular of when health authorities start fiddling with the definitions of basic concepts like herd-immunity, vaccine, immunization). Otherwise, the vaccines (as per Israel) are looking an awful lot like sizzle.
Are you OK with twice-annual covid booster shots (each presumably carrying an additional risk, however infinitesimal or not-so-infinitesimal)? You say that Israel should’ve crushed the virus in Spring through vaccines: how much population would have been needed to be vaccinated for that result? More likely, nobody at the CDC paid much attention to that earlier definition on their website prior to COVID, and then suddenly there’s a global pandemic and someone realized that the word “immunity” may give a slightly wrong impression of what vaccines actually do (most do not confer 100% protection). In any case, it’s not like anyone’s changing their minds about vaccines one way or the other because of the definition featured on cdc.gov.
Re: vaccines driving mutations — oh, that’s basically guaranteed to happen. It’s more or less inevitable with any intervention that isn’t 100% effective (and almost no intervention is 100% effective). Antibiotics are great — saved billions of lives — but over time, they’ve also driven the evolution of multidrug resistant bacteria. Same for many antivirals, antifungals, etc. AMR in general has been named by the WHO as one of the top public health threats globally. Doesn’t mean we should declare antibiotics useless, and doesn’t mean we should declare covid vaccines useless either.

Your team has two goalies, one of them played for 20 minutes and gave up five goals for an average goals against per game of 15, the other goalie played the rest of the season with a goals against of 2.5, is your team’s total goals against 8.75 for the season? Or somewhere a shade over 2.5? You have to weight the averages by total minutes played to get a realistic number. The tweet makes no attempt to weight the averages presented with hard numbers of people vaccinated and not vaccinated in each group.

Leaving aside the fact of how hilariously wrong the part about more government is, he is half right: what most conservatives object to in my experience is the kind of gross degeneracy the KGB began and the modern left has ramped up to epic levels. You know: massive self-enrichment on the public tit; promoting riots, arson, and murder in order to intimidate the opposition; open borders to ensure a huge voting bloc with the obvious intent of retaining power indefinitely and dissolve anything resembling national identity; promotion of sexual depravity and zombie-like intoxication as rewards for voting the right way; the co-opting of the legal system and mass media as political weapons; the steady erosion of rights and freedoms formerly guaranteed in order to silence the opposition; the promotion of the rights of fringe groups over those of the majority; and on and on and on. These are just a few of the more obvious ones.
So you know, as steakman and Buddy and many others have said, we really are in a war, and not just a “culture” war – a war for the very survival of rational civilization. People like UnMe, with his obvious lust to see us all dead, need to be defeated by any means necessary. He and his ilk might be young(ish), but my son and his friends are younger, smarter, and healthier, and they value their rights just as much as we do. We may lose some battles now, but if history has taught us anything, it’s that tyranny NEVER stands for long. Keep hope alive. 🙂

I’ll give you this much Ted: unlike UnPerson and Allan S (who I think are the only two real trolls here, just posting under various names – writing style again), you seem to be a reasonable person. Still, it’s as we say here: there is a war going on, tyrants and their multitude of enablers clinging to and increasing their power by stamping on our rights vs. we citizens. At the end of the day, that’s what this is about. ALL of it.
