Did, however, remind me of a time – many years ago – when eldest went off on the May long weekend with her senior Guide (think Rangers) group for a camp-out west of town. Weather reasonable in town, so did not realize there was a heavy snowfall to the west. The whole family was out shopping, etc., so it was only when we returned home that we got the message that the camp-out had been abandoned when all the tents collapsed due to a nasty wet snowfall and the kids were in danger of becoming hypothermic. Unable to contact us (no cell phones in those days) eldest daughter had taken refuge chez Granny. Granny, needless to say, had risen to the situation admirably, and had provided a hot bath and nourishing food. We felt somewhat guilty for not having been available, but that soon wore off.
I spent several years in the Army Reserves. I quite deliberately avoided all winter exercises. Camping in the winter is stupid. I thought wars were fought between planting and harvest.

Ya, the meat, potatoes and onion were not frozen. Like a fool I watched it to the end.
Spent 20 odd years living and working out of a set up like this. Standard fare for Geological types in the bush in the mining business. They are incredibly warm. Keep the feezables elevated off the floor you’ll be fine. If you don’t get any snow on your hands, they don’t “stick” to anything metal. Did the no gloves thing repairing skidoos, oil changes on trucks dressed in just a pair of bib insulated coveralls, wool sweater and Stanfields one piece and wool toque. The use of wool, especially on your head is important as wool is warm, even wet. Down sucks when wet. You lose 60-70% of your body heat from your head, so put the wool on your head, you’ll stay warm every where else. Always have spare dry socks out on the trail, change them when your feet sweat, or when your feet start to chill. I always had spare dry socks in my pack or pockets. Learned that fist time I froze my feet driving a snow machine.
The only difference to this tent setup was the use of an oil stove, wood is more work than it’s worth in the bush, unless you’re using a 36 inch or bigger airtight, or living part time out there. Did both in my years in the bush. At -35 daytime to -60 night time temps, the “snow” just freezes out of the air as ice fog. Pure powder. No “wet” snow until spring, Once the ice is on the lakes, there is little moisture in the air to freeze. Snow is an excellent insulator, pack it around the base of your tent setup, hell even sleep in the snow, no tent. Did that lots out at the drill waiting to log the hole. Sub zero temps. The secret to being warm is to “eat” lots. And living out there you actually get used to the cold, so much so that the first few nights in town you’re stripped down to BVD’s it’s so hot indoors and open the damned window. Camped like that in the Yukon, northern BC, Saskatchewan, NW Ontario, northern Quebec. Once it’s -40 or lower, it’s all the same. Coldish.

At least, by watching Max Bernier’s speech, we will have seen what a fine gentleman Max is and we will have heard no finer a campaign speech. He displayed some style, class and panache like no other and has, basically, showed us his good humor.
Okay, so he’s from Quebec. The Westerners, especially, don’t trust anyone from that province. I don’t blame them. I don’t either. I came from there and left a long time ago. Believe me, the people from the Beauce don’t trust the Liberals either. They are business-minded and therefore Conservative.
I once worked with a girl from the Beauce. She looked and acted like a Conservative person. I don’t know what more to say except that she was fair-minded, smart, kind and quiet. Her accent when speaking English even sounded exactly like Bernier’s. He may not make it as P.M. but at least we Canadians got to know a really nice guy. His mixed roots prove it.

I have become increasingly worried about the following scenario:
Conservatives get the most seats of any single party, but not a majority.
NDP and Liberals together have more seats than Conservatives.
NDP and Liberals form a governing coalition, and nothing gets better. Of course, Trudeau’s current pick for Governor General is happy to oblige.
Is this something else to worry about?
A Prime Minister is under no obligation to resign should he lose an election. It is likely the Governor General would want a quick recall of Parliament so the PM could prove he had its confidence. Of course if the Conservatives received a majority, the leader would be asked to form the government with no games involved.

The whole family was out shopping, etc., so it was only when we returned home that we got the message that the camp-out had been abandoned when all the tents collapsed due to a nasty wet snowfall and the kids were in danger of becoming hypothermic. Unable to contact us (no cell phones in those days) eldest daughter had taken refuge chez Granny. Granny, needless to say, had risen to the situation admirably, and had provided a hot bath and nourishing food. We felt somewhat guilty for not having been available, but that soon wore off.
I spent several years in the Army Reserves. I quite deliberately avoided all winter exercises. Camping in the winter is stupid. I thought wars were fought between planting and harvest.

Spent 20 odd years living and working out of a set up like this. Standard fare for Geological types in the bush in the mining business. They are incredibly warm. Keep the feezables elevated off the floor you’ll be fine. If you don’t get any snow on your hands, they don’t “stick” to anything metal. Did the no gloves thing repairing skidoos, oil changes on trucks dressed in just a pair of bib insulated coveralls, wool sweater and Stanfields one piece and wool toque. The use of wool, especially on your head is important as wool is warm, even wet. Down sucks when wet. You lose 60-70% of your body heat from your head, so put the wool on your head, you’ll stay warm every where else. Always have spare dry socks out on the trail, change them when your feet sweat, or when your feet start to chill. I always had spare dry socks in my pack or pockets. Learned that fist time I froze my feet driving a snow machine.
The only difference to this tent setup was the use of an oil stove, wood is more work than it’s worth in the bush, unless you’re using a 36 inch or bigger airtight, or living part time out there. Did both in my years in the bush. At -35 daytime to -60 night time temps, the “snow” just freezes out of the air as ice fog. Pure powder. No “wet” snow until spring, Once the ice is on the lakes, there is little moisture in the air to freeze. Snow is an excellent insulator, pack it around the base of your tent setup, hell even sleep in the snow, no tent. Did that lots out at the drill waiting to log the hole. Sub zero temps. The secret to being warm is to “eat” lots. And living out there you actually get used to the cold, so much so that the first few nights in town you’re stripped down to BVD’s it’s so hot indoors and open the damned window. Camped like that in the Yukon, northern BC, Saskatchewan, NW Ontario, northern Quebec. Once it’s -40 or lower, it’s all the same. Coldish.
