Vivian Bercovici: Israel readies booster shots as COVID cases explode

In recent years, I’ve developed a habit of popping off to Finland — the closest thing to Canada that is close to Israel — for a cottage holiday.

Everything about Finland is the most perfect antidote to summer in Tel Aviv: quiet, orderly, cool weather, an abundance of summer berries and freshwater lakes.

So, as departure day approached, and Delta numbers in Israel gained the wrong kind of momentum, I reverted to my obsessive covid chart-watching persona I had dropped months ago. The rolling seven day average in early July was bumping up against the ceiling the Finns publicized as a red line. However, by the time we boarded our flight for Helsinki a few weeks later, Israel had blown through the upper limit for admission to Finland — of 25 newly infected individuals per 100,000 — exponentially. Both Israel and Finland were on a clear upward trajectory, which continues to this day.

Life is so very hard for our former ambassador these days. How does she find the strength to continue being such an inspiration for us all?

  1. Good grief, I am so sick of people who use the pejorative term “anti-vaxxer” when referring to those who have serious reservations with respect to these shots (and ONLY these shots). They have no credibility with me, and they certainly have no bearing whatsoever on my decision to avoid these shots. So who are they really trying to convince? Themselves? Or is it just a pathetic attempt at virtue signaling?

BTW I’ve had plenty of legitimate vaccines with proven safety and efficacy records. How that translates into me being an “anti-vaxxer” must take some real mental gymnastics.

    1. Fluff off that psychology crap and just say to yourself…”I ain’t no experiment. I ain’t no experiment.”
And turn off the boob tube pushing that horseshit.

THE MEDIA IS NOT YOUR FRIEND!

This will break soon as too many issues are in the air and none are economically viable.

      1. It ain’t the media. It’s their favourite scientician.

Not scientist, those in those professions need to be aware of what’s going on. If the interpreter of Science is right (note the capitals) then XYZ must come to pass.

    2. Anyone questions you regarding are you vaxxed, go on the attack. Ask them if they have any venereal disease that you should be aware of, do they have AIDS for example or venereal warts etc. Ask their personal health information. Do they have a prolapsed uterus or hemorrhoid’s. And make sure you are loud.
Enough of the being a polite Canadian Shit.

Same. If one has gone through Military basic training, then one of the first things they do besides shaving your head is inoculating one for EVERY conceivable pathogen on the planet, be they viral or bacterial. I served and went through this process. 7203 Cornwallis

I too will absolutely refuse to partake in this grand medical experiment….

This abject in yer face coercion to do so is simply something taken right out of our mid 20th century History: The Enticement of the Jews to embark cattle cars with the slogan of work makes you free…or in its native deutsch: Arbeit Macht Frie

      Todays iteration: Jab Allows Travel

The Desired end result is IDENTICAL…IMO.

  2. And the twit compares Canad, Finland and Israel , dumb twit. Finland is less socialist than Canada, and they have single payer plus private health care, we don’t.

  3. I’m a fan of Bercovici. Harper appointed her Ambassador.

She is a good writer and of course knows Israel. Nice to see her in the National Post.

If there was vaccine hesitation in the first round wait until they unleash round 3.

    1. Yeah, I don’t understand the snark here. She’s one of the only good people Harper appointed. Weird. Maybe personal?

    2. Yes to Bercovici. Great ambassador. Israel’s covid experience is informative. Claire Lehman, editor of Quillette, is another good person intolerant of different attitudes to vaccines. We can’t all be right all the time and with covid in particular, hesitancy should be entirely understandable. If I were 50 years younger, I suspect I would not be vaxxed.

  4. Is round 4 of the Chinese flu vaccine scheduled for January?
As numbers continue to soar, and medicines stop working, when will it be acceptable to say the word ivermectin on social media without being bounced or given a warning or safety banner on the advice of WHO or the other health experts in the #Librano Party of Canada?

I should feel lucky as I don’t have to toss my babies over a fence to save them from the onward march of muslims? This has something to do with being grateful for only having to be jabbed a couple of times to survive, to save the human race?

I’m not jabbed for the Chinese flu, and I don’t feel it’s luck that I’m not having to do a baby toss to save my children from other muslims. Afghanistan wouldn’t be in their deep shit pool of trouble if it wasn’t islamic, nor had permitted those people to invade from Pakistan, nor would Pakistan be a basket case if it’d rid itself of the islamic terror from within… and on it goes, what’s the commonality here?

Saving babies from muslims, muslims using their babies as weapons… what’s the commonality here? Bueller?

Ambassador Vivian was an admirable representative for Canada.
Perhaps she could look at the fields surrounding Israel now and imagine what the terror threat to her new homeland is.

  5. “Both Israel and Finland were on a clear upward trajectory, which continues to this day.”
You’re lying. As of today Israel stands at a whopping 937.21 cases per 100,000 and is only now experiencing a slight downward trend…Finland comes in at a paltry 105.54 and has been on a downward slope for some time now.
Keep up the good work, Israel, you’re doing great. My guess is “Unvaxxed ghettos should do the trick for those “stupid” and obstinate “anti vaxxers.”

I reverted to my obsessive covid chart-watching persona. “obsessive” is a charitable way of saying “I’m mentally ill…please help me.”

“Israeli public health officials, working in conjunction with Pfizer has determined that after six months or so, the effectiveness of the vaccine wanes.”

Is that so?…quelle surprise!! In street terms that usually means the newly addicted suburbanite having a meetup with his meth dealer from time to time…the same scumbag who always insists he’s your friend as long as you pay.

“…like pools and cinemas — any child over the age of three must provide results from a rapid test taken within 24 hours. “
Oh how nice. Tune in next week when Viv brags about how the trains always run on time.

“…including the possibility of ongoing, daily testing of young children, until a more efficacious solution presents.”
What a truly horrible woman she is.

” …so only the truly stupid try to game the system.” Yeah, god forbid there should be people in Israel who aren’t lemmings like you Bercovici.

Didn’t know her till today and I can’t stand her. That’s gotta be some kind of record.

    1. “I’m a fan…”
Why? No one knows. Maybe because she’s such a “good writer”.
You never read the article did you?

      1. burt

You don’t know why because you’ve never heard of her…but you know she’s no good.

Your comments say a lot more about you burt than they do about Bercovici.

        Take a heart pill

        1. Hey man – relax… I’m not the one who has an opportunity to write for the National Post . I’m Joe Schlub who has to deal with this shit on a local level and quite frankly it hasn’t been fun. I and the wife don’t get to go on trips to Finland to get away from it all and then tell the rest of the world what great human beings we are in our own country…ok? if you think masking your kid and having them produce a “Green card” at health facilities is your idea of what society ought to be like now and in the future …knock yourself out. Count me the fuck out.

          Seriously, grab a clue.

    2. Ha Ha Ha. I could use a holiday too…This shit making me crazy.
I advised poor Nancy to take a break last week I think, now I am losing my shit.

…And uh, Are the ALL the countries in the Western Hemisphere (Israel incl.), still utilizing the RT PCR as their designated diagnostic tool…?

If so (and I fully believe this to be the case), then all those supposed “numbers” are 100% BULLSHIT….. I have seen nothing to suggest RT PCR has been discontinued by ANYONE ANYWHERE, nor seen definitive proof it’s being kept to 28 cycles or less.

  7. “…And uh, Are the ALL the countries in the Western Hemisphere (Israel incl.), still utilizing the RT PCR as their designated diagnostic tool…?

I have absolutely no way of knowing. So I’ll defer to your expertise on this topic. I’m only using numbers from the same data base they throw at us “unbelievers” when they want to induce panic.
This is the website. I use it only because Kate featured it here once or twice and it seems quite comprehensive.

Is it reliable…who the hell knows?

    1. Careful with these ‘calculations’. If 100% of the population is vaxxed, then 100% of Covid deaths will be among the vaxxed!

The number you SHOULD be demanding is the marginal benefit of the vaccine vs the marginal risk of the vaccine. And compare with marginal risk-reward of not getting it.

Here is what I mean: suppose I have an 8% chance of getting Covid. What is my conditional probability of getting bad, if I get it? Say it’s 25%. That means my probability of getting a serious case of Covid (needing hospital) is 2% (25% × 8%, using the multiplication rule with conditional probability). So 2% chance of getting a hospital visit with Covid.

The incidence of myocarditis in College athletes (male) is currently 2.5%. This comes with a SIGNIFICANT increase in risk of SCD. So at first blush, it looks as though the risk of getting the vax is higher than not.

Now, if I have a 10% chance of dying in hosptial from Covid, but only a 5% chance of suffering SCD, well then the vaccine might still be a better choice.

But it isn’t immediately obvious, is it?

As a computationally brilliant stats buddy of mine always says: “give me the conditional probabilities, or get the f+ck outta my face”

      1. And health Canada shows a steadily rising RATE (per 100 000) of serious adverse events from the vaccines.

These things have been bashed together, sidestepping usual drug development protocols, ignoring the fact that adverse events leading to permanent and debilitating conditions are ORDERS OF MAGNITUDE HIGHER than ANY prior vaccine for a major illness. This gives me major pause.

I am holding out for the new and improved versions that fix all these issues, AND gives downstream protection from all the variants created by the overly type-restricted v1.0 vaccine models!

I mean, who goes all in on v1.0 of anything this critical?

Vax people: I am not going to fluff you an easy ‘A’ for doing a shoddy, half-ass job. Do your f+cking homework next time!

        1. These brilliant people haven’t caught on to the fact that the vax is causing more problems than it fixes, it fixes nothing, and cannot stop the spread or intensity of any illness.

  8. Could the reduction in hospitalizations and deaths be due, in part, to the deaths of the weak and infirm during prior waves? Culling the herd so to speak.
