Anybody know what’s going on in the St. John Valley? The west half of that valley is in Maine, the east in New Brunswick, people there think of themselves as citizens of the St. John Valley who happen to be US or Canadian citizens too. When I was there – last century – border crossings were a wave, unless they didn’t know you then it was as normal. One of the paper mills I picked up at was half in each country – Maine made the slurry then piped it across the river for finishing. If they tried to close that part of the border I’m sure it did wonders for rowboat and canoe prices – families, lovers, friends, and businesses are all international there.
Here in South Carolina things have been basically normal for over a year. We put all the signs up, then ignored them and our results are as good as most and we avoided huge spikes in overdoses etc. and were able to avoid fiscal disaster so as to now allow us to bail out the spendthrift states. I know one man in the eastern part of the state who misses his free-spending Quebecois customers, other than that no one ever really thinks of Canada. I always make sure to buy Canola oil, though, in honor of this blog.
