It’s funny: when I was less conservative-leaning, my Dad tried to make this argument with me, with examples of lies about certain politically-charged stories that he could personally refute. He also–foolishly–believed “they” controlled education as well (more later). The effect of his broad brush? Instant distrust of media. I began to think a lot more critically about the stories I was seeing on TV, and when the Internet exploded, it became tonnes more obvious who was controlling what, and the sliding scale of leftism therein. So, thanks, Dad. (There was a semi-contemporaneous education in “lying through advertising” that was also contributory…distrust in the media came young to me.)
Regarding education, he thought this control was to make society dumber. He was right, but he had the wrong enemy targetted. As he got older, he seems to have shifted more right in his views, but he’s fighting the cognitive dissonance of supporting the “wrong party”. I found some hope on a couple of issues, immigration being one, and he was seemingly receptive to the concept of “government workers don’t pay income taxes, regardless of what they say”.
Additional factoid: in Grade 8, we did “Current Events”. Unintentionally, I think, that class also taught me how to think critically about news stories, since part of our remit was to analyse them. Which is why they don’t really want you doing that: analysis creates understanding.
Anyway, Kinsella gets things right sometimes. I alternately follow and unfollow him on Twitter, depending on mood. But I’m not sure I’d trust him in the political arena.
Yeah, well, Michelle Rempel (yes, THAT Michelle) was palsy walsy with Kantsmellya and his wife. Look it up………at least until they split up a year or so ago.

I like that phrase. Reminds me of a true story about Bernie Farber, someone who certainly fits the bill.
Mr. Farber was the head of the Canadian Jewish Congress (CJC), and back then I subscribed to the Canadian Jewish News (CJN), which has the CJC house newspaper. The National Post ran an interview with Farber, where he claimed that the CJC fights antisemitism, whether it comes from the left or the tight.
Reading the CJN each week, I knew the newspaper fought hard against antisemitism. But I read very little about what Farber was doing. So reading the CJC web page press releases for that year, the CJC issued exactly four press releases on antisemitism, three criticizing far-right groups, and one denouncing two messages written on a bathroom stall at the University of Toronto. Farber worried about bathroom stalls at a time when the anti-Israel boycott and divestment movement was in full bloom in Canada.
Farber runs something called the Canada anti-Hate Network. He pays himself a six-figure salary, and attacks only right-wing groups.
This may be alluding to something Kinsella posted on his blog about years ago – when Free Dominion was still around – that he found anti-semitic messages and swaztikas scrawled in a bathroom in a public park (AFAIK it wasn’t at UofT). Full blown panic mode and filling his shorts, so to speak.
Was amusing at the time (like almost everything Kinsella did back then, in a “roll your eyes what did the village idiot get up to now” sort of way).

And Pollivere is the only reason I’m only 99% sure that I’ll tell the Federal Tories the same thing. Best case scenario: Junior calls a snap election, gets an even smaller minority, holds on for a year or two…and O’toole is put out to pasture for an actual conservative.
