Trudeau government threatens Halifax Security Forum over proposed Taiwan award

The organizers of one of the world’s most prestigious defense gatherings are in the midst of an uncomfortable international standoff between the Canadian government and China over a major award they had planned to give to the president of Taiwan.

The standstill, which is ongoing and has not been previously reported, has created tension between the Halifax International Security Forum and the Canadian government, which is a major sponsor of the forum.

Late last year, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter, the forum’s organizers decided to give its John McCain Prize for Leadership in Public Service to Tsai Ing-wen, the president of Taiwan. Cindy McCain, a member of the forum’s board of directors, greenlit the decision to honor Tsai with the prize named after her late husband.

It would have been the third time the HFX presented the McCain award. The first, in 2018, went to the people of Lesbos, Greece, for their efforts to save refugees; the second, in 2019, went to the citizen protesters in Hong Kong. HFX planned to give the third to Taiwan’s president for standing strong against China’s relentless pressure.

When Canadian officials learned of the forum’s plans, they made it clear that if organizers gave the honor to Tsai, the Canadian government would pull support — and funding — from HFX.

  1. Prinz Dummkopf doing one of the things he’s really good at: embarrassing the country in front of the rest of the world…..

Then again, we’re a post-national state now, aren’t we, so we don’t have a country any more, let alone one he could humiliate by his ineptitude.

      1. Just wondering how many ” non-profit” businesses our 3 levels of government are ‘major’ funding supporters. I would guess in the hundreds of thousands now.

  2. I think No Comment is all that needs to be said. Who the hell is advising the Canadian government?

  3. Actually, I don’t have a dog in this fight. After all, an award named after Songbird McCain…

  4. Canadians died fighting the Chinese commies in Korea, and this wimpering coward hides under his bed.

      1. As some wag once put it, “if you can’t dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with…..”

          1. As one of my senior undergrad year profs used to say, “Close enough for government work.”

    1. “Canadians died fighting the Chinese commies in Korea, and this wimpering coward hides under his bed.”

Au contraire! turdo la doo has been completely up front and open about being Xi’s dik-tik.

  5. This quote

“ The standstill, which is ongoing and has not been previously reported”

Is all you need to know.

  6. Trudeau cult’s Globe and Mail informs us that an advisor states we should bow to China and announce that China’s legal system is wonderful, in order to get the kidnapped Canadians back.

    1. Well, I have a question about those two “Canadians” in Chinah. Why were they there? Anybody…Buehler? Shhhh, no details, not even weeping Mothers.

  7. “To learn who rules over you, simply find out who you are not allowed to criticize.”

    Voltaire

    Astute chap.

  8. ” … the Canadian government would pull support — and funding — from HFX.”

So you take the King’s shilling and you expect what …. independence of action and thought?

But most Canadians are fine with this kind of obligation.

  9. Trudeau is a coward and Liberals are amoral and most Canadian voters are sheep who are probably nodding in agreement with this approach.

  10. Eunuch liberals, turd especially. are the embodiment of the colbert holster President Trump was accused of being for putin. In the turd’s case, put it in works.

The events we are witnessing from the stupid side of humanity, are proof that the pillsberry doughboy was gang raped by monkeys. Deevolution is happening before our eyes. I can’t imagine that this can be reversed. They need to hurry towards the cliff they so urgently seek.

And the rest of us need to secure the high ground, toot sweet.

  11. For me, the key line is “…tension between the Halifax International Security Forum and the Canadian government, which is a major sponsor of the forum” as it, (1) highlights the dangers of a dependence on government funding (a particular Canadian disease) and (2) forces the question: without government support, how any truly independent institutions really are there in Canada?

    1. Eric, I fully agree. Did a bit of reading of the HISF web site, and it has a lot of people from other democratic countries involved with it. And the group, as the posted article says, has taken a strong anti-China stance on a number of fronts. Both the Department of National Defence Canada and ACOA contribute money to the organization.

    2. “how any truly independent institutions really are there in Canada”

Very, very, few. Farm organizations, business and industry advocacy groups, newspapers &TV, and millions of ordinary Canadians have no qualms of cares about the virtues of independence or the ethics of living off funds extorted from fellow citizens.

  12. Not only is he Mr. Dressup. He plays hand puppets Casey and Finnegan too. Great job drama flunkie. Much worse than “I have a signed paper!” Neville.

  13. This group should tell the government to stick their funding where the sun doesn’t shine.

  14. Can you imagine how much freer, richer, safer and happier Canadians would be if it really was the elders of the Jewish people who controlled the world, and not the CCP Politburo?

  15. If ever there was a time in this country we needed to boot out a Prime Minister it is at the first opportunity. No more slagging the party leader most likely to do it and it is not the NDP, they are one and the same.

  16. Malcolm at True North has a pretty good story today about the men of Vimy Ridge and the men today.

  17. The idiot in charge understands the donations from individuals, corporations and groups funded by the communists of China.

Other than that he has no clue. Zero. Zilch. Zip, None. Nada.

Canadians are fine with that and will vote for him in the next election.

  18. The Spawn’s father worshipped Mao, the world’s record holder of mass murder so why wouldn’t his Spawn carry on in the same tradition. The country of mindless mushy middle morons that he rules over allow him to do as he pleases through his NDP communist-leaning, bolstered and mindlessly elected basic dictatorship.

    1. Dinglefritz was probably already bought lock, stock, and blackface when he made his notorious “I wuv China’th dictatorthip” comment.

      1. Ah yes, t’was a: “base-ithh… dictatorship” reference…
… and those Toronto broads nevah said a word…and now we have one in Canada…pity… just womyn they were, not exactly the Laurentian elites. N’est pas the same!

        1. just womyn they were

They were probably couldn’t have cared less. They were in awe of him as he represented their ideal boyfriend.

  19. Were he to end ala Nicolae….??
We need a Vlad here in this country…

That would make my day-month-year-decade….hell my Entire life..!!
    In an alternate universe maybe…

Well one can still dream, No..??

  20. If there was any doubt Dear Leader is always on his knees orally servicing Xi, that has been removed.

  21. Instead of saying THEY would give an award, they should have said WE would, and gotten Margaret to give the award out.

  22. And Trudeau ignored the early warnings from Taiwan regarding the Wuhan virus. Deliberately….not only that, but he and “Dr” Tam also tried to mute those warnings. Taiwan knew early on that China and the W.H.O. were lying about human transmission of the Wuhan virus. As a result, Taiwan was very closely monitoring every person coming into Taiwan as early as December 31, 2019. Canada, on the other hand, not only invited, but assisted in ensuring the Wuhan virus gained a deep foothold in Canada. Now, if you use the per million death rate from the Wuhan virus of Taiwan and apply it to Canada, we come up with a TOTAL death toll of FIFTEEN. Not 15 hundred or 15 thousand, but FIFTEEN. Instead we have well over 23,000. ALL of those deaths are on the hands of Trudeau and “Dr” Tam. Where are the Nuremberg Trials when you really need them?

    1. Not only that, but deaths in the demographic eliciting the response “madam, madam, madam” by Trudeau in a quiet part of Kaybec, right near Roxham Road, PQ too, come to think of it. Before Wuflu even, but after his “I have a dream….” of basic democracy……. Chinah Folk style. (spit)

She was asking if they (le gouvernment) would be returning “the $146 million that we paid for your illegal immigrants.”
To me a valid question, hardly racist at all as he called it. A concerned tax payer from his own Province. He called her “Old Stock”, a rather polite way of what he really meant to say “veille vache”. That’s “Old Cow” in h’Anglaise. I’ll bet she dies on the farm and not at the Vielle Vache Corral in town.
By the way….where’s Gerald Butts these days?

  23. Okay, I keep asking this but no one gives me a satisfactory answer.

Justin said (and there is video evidence) that his favourite country was China.

Who said anything? Was he taken out of the running for leadership?

Nope. He was praised. Everyone thought it was a joke.

Had he said he admired the US’ basic democracy, he would be on the supply list today.

Now people are surprised that he gives China what it wants?

    1. If I was in the scrum, I’d ask him pointedly why he hasn’t hived off to sunny Shanghai, he likes Chinah so much, like his dad’s pal Maurice Strong?

      1. When he is finally out of office and the books are opened, he will emigrate to China and find some numbered bank accounts unaccountably open in his name, a-la- Maurice Strong

  24. I have often said: The Canadian Government is run by China. We just don’t know it yet.

  25. About 85 years ago news and pictures surfaced out of Germany about people being herded into railway cars and shipped to labour/concentration camps. In spite of the treaty of Versailles, Germany build up an impressive war machine and started several border disputes with its neighbours. The rest of the world reacted with appeasement and the Olympic committee awarded Gemany, handing them the Munich Olympics. Now pictures, videos and reports have surfaced out of China showing people being herded into railway cars to be shipped to reeducation/labour/concentration camps. The Chinese have built up an impressive war machine and have started border conflicts with some if its neighbours. Too many governments are reacting with appeasement and the Olympic committee…………..! Am I the only one seeing history repeating itself?

    1. Don’t think so John Fonteine, the Russians are amassing along the Ukraine border seemingly to extend their border west. They are not happy with just Crimea. They have come to some cooperation economically with China and between the 2 of them they are a rather formidal force.
Is NATO going to get into a skirmish in Ukraine? I doubt it unless the US leads. That leaves Russia to do what Russia has done for decades / the last century?
As far as China? Their leader has told their Armed Forces to “PREPARE”! That scares the shit out of me (and you) but I am left to wonder if anyone else is paying attention…

  26. My husband was a diplomat. External/Global Affairs Canada has had a “one China” official policy for decades, likely since Trudeau senior was running the show, or possibly Lester B. Peason, our first globalist PM.

I recall going to a small dinner party in Ottawa at the Chinese Embassy during the Mulroney years, and the entire evening was focused on the issue of whether Canada would retain it’s “one China” policy (i.e. basically ignoring that Taiwan has existed as a separate country for a long time now). They were assured that there would be no policy change by our Canadian diplomats, who do not make policy changes.

The CCP is now more aggressively “telling” other countries what to think, and dropping $$ in brown envelopes to power brokers.

Whatever happened to the UN policy on self-determination? Oh, I forgot, both Russia and China had vetos from the get-go!
