About to?

How’s about already has.

From the Globe and Mail

I don’t want to alarm you, but you might like to know that the federal government is about to take over the media.

Perhaps you will think I am exaggerating. But before the spring is out, based on its own announced timeline, there won’t be a patch of grass on the media landscape – broadcasting or newspapers, digital or analog, curated or user-generated – that the government does not either regulate or subsidize or both. If takeover is not the word, what is?

Broadcasting, of course, fell to the state long ago. Every minute of every hour of every day of what is broadcast on Canadian radio and television is overseen by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC), with its sprawling mandate to protect the public from material that is harmful, degrading or American. Though since much of the content it scrutinizes, classifies and regulates in such detail has already been put through the bureaucratic wringer at the front end via various subsidy councils, it hardly seems worth the effort.

Whole thing

See if this gets you past the firewall.

This one qualifies for the Die Hard award.

  1. Unfortunately, pay wall in place at the Globe for this article.

If I recall correctly, Coyne has been against the government paying the media right from the start of this Librano initiative.

    1. If the “Conservative ” Party opposes the Media Subsidization, then I believe the Canadian Media has become a prejudicial, compromised and self-interested yet integral part of our democratic process, and MUST recuse themselves entirely during the electoral period.

  2. You mean the Toronto Star isn’t unbiased?? Next thing you will be telling me that the CBC is biased.

  3. Get back to me when he resigns from the Globe and Minion, admits it was a CCP front long before this, and starts over at the Rebel as the guy who goes out for Ezra’s coffee.

Alas, Andy, who got where he is today by being a central banker’s nephew, is never going to take orders from someone who actually worked for what he has and depends on his brains for his bread, unless that person is his prison warden.

  4. If it’s a bad thing, he can give up his filthy lucre and resign from the government sponsored media, and hang up his own free shingle…

but of course he won’t do that, he’ll just rail against it until it costs him something.

  5. The link Francisco posted to bypass the Globe paywall worked for me.

    This is Coyne’s conclusion:

“If the government were only putting all of the country’s newspapers on its payroll, or imposing Canadian content quotas on YouTube, or snooping through people’s tweets, it would be worrying enough. But as it is proposing to do all three at the same time, I think a little alarm is in order.”

  6. On a positive note, as of the time of this comment, the “most respected comment” at the Globe website to Coyne’s article is by Teddy Ballgame 9:

“When Justin Trudeau declares that “diversity is our strength” he does so with the same integrity and sincerity as when he declares that he and his government respect parliament and the rule of law.

Trudeau has no tolerance for political, ideological or intellectual diversity as exemplified so many times but perhaps quintessentially in March 2020 when he excluded the leader of the party with the most votes (CPC’s Scheer) in the recent election from a leaders’ meeting to discuss the response to the new COVID-19 crisis because he didn’t like a question that Scheer had asked him in parliament.

One of the most effective ways to gradually eliminate freedom of thought, speech, assembly and comment is to colonize the media by carrots (e.g. slush funds, ad budgets, access to ministers) and sticks (e.g. stricter regulation and censoring of content, “difficulties” getting broadcast licenses, as with the moderation here a list of approved and disallowed language).

Having bought off the voters and the NDP, the Liberals have a de facto majority and as Andrew suggests are engaged in a final push for “basic dictatorship” over legacy and social media.

    Basic dictatorship Chinese style awaits.”

  7. Isn’t it cute when Coyne virtue signals his “conservatism” .

Someone must have shorted his Liberal brown bag last week, but he is firmly within the Laurentian fold.

The politicized, propagandized media in this country is unwatchable, unlistenable, and not to be believed, in any way shape or form. They have blinded and dumbed down the majority of a gullible and uninterested population. The only difference between Soviet style Tass/Pravda productions, is the faux charm, sort of but not really pretty faces, and puppy/whale/kitty stories, all wrapped in a sheen of bubble gum and cotton candy. Strip away those layers, and the media’s stories are obtained from the Liberal Party HQ

    1. Agree. I subscribe to the G&M (for its business and investment information primarily), and most of the time I do not bother reading Coyne’s politically correct columns. Last year he called Trump supporters viruses. In 2015 he quit the National Post’s opinion editor position when the paper nixed a column of his endorsing Justin Trudeau as prime minister.

But here his columnn is excellent and informative. The Rat (above) kindly provides a link to the whole op-ed. I encourage SDAers to read the whole thing. The last one third — which gets into federal plans to regulate internet thouhht — is particularly good. A must read.

  8. If you have ever been to PEI, you know why it was, and continues to be, the perfect setting for the creation of Canada.
The whole place is red clay and sand.
Can’t think of a more appropriate metaphor for the country and its leadership.
All the jellyfish might be a good representation of the media.
And no non French place is more Liberal or entitled than PEI.
    Imbeciles parfaits.
    Canadiens parfaits.

    1. Especially the jelly fish! One could “walk on water” on the jelly fish alone in Charlottetown. Where that famous painting was taken.

  9. Die Hard Award?

I was thinking more along the lines of the Tarkin Award:

“The more you tighten your grip…”
Seriously, I will NOT watch their propaganda, except to jeer at their fiendish stupidity. And if I can’t view the media I want to, then my choice will be to view NOTHING.
My mind is not theirs to corrupt, and it NEVER WILL BE.
I guess that makes me a racistbigothomophobetransphobesciencedeniermisogynist. Fine! F*** them. They are my enemy. I’m DONE talking to them.

  10. Short version? Their shit doesn’t sell so they want to hobble those who can and they’ll gladly kick objectivity to the curb and censor others so they don’t have to learn to code.

As for Coyne – He does his Captain Obvious routine every so often to jack up his “I’m a deep thinker” bona fides.
When your cousin popped out Pierre’s love child and your sister is a Canadian actress along with a daddy who was a former Governor of the Bank of Canada you may as well have Smarmy Laurentian Elitist stamped on your forehead.

  11. On the road to Venezuela..
They had such a media, who told them how wonderful everything was, just before they had to eat their pets and zoo animals..
So now the Pravda will be all “Good enough for government”..
I like it,when we take the surrender of the Canadian Armed forces ,when they lamely attempt to invade our sovereign State of Buffalo..Eastern Canada will never know.
For reporting on the collapse of the Glorious Kleptocracy of Can Ahh Duh,will be a hate crime.

I looked up the federal covid dictats, indeed the parasitic overoad will attempt to fine one a million bucks and/or 3 years in jail, should,in their opinion,a person ignoring government advice ,re covid, cause another person serious sickness or death..
Now on top of our government media not reporting these idiotic decrees, one wonders..Do these same rules apply to Government Minions?
Who have caused the death of thousands ..
So we shall throw most of our bureaucrats and politicians in jail for 3 years ,to thank them for their “Help” which has caused untold suffering ,deaths and economic destruction?

Or once again,do these draconian new rules, only apply to us worms?

Imagine if there were a real reporter in the Confederated Kleptocracy…just a repeat of the “Official Advice” from our useless and clueless “helpers” from last March till today.would expose the utter incompetence of our wanna be jailers.

  12. Not sure who Coyne’s audience is. I sure will never read a thing that myopic halfwit “Resistance” gasbag writes anymore.

It’s hilarious it comes as a surprise to him that his precious Liberals turn out to be grasping corrupt totalitarians, as if it wasn’t obvious all along, to anyone not ensconced in his comfortable cocoon of useless failure-theatre yapping. It’s a sign of how utterly insipid, shallow and ignorant his “thinking” and “analysis” has been from the start.

Eat your liver, Andy, you pointless waste of skin.

  13. Coyne is in the same category as Frum these days but I was pleasantly surprised with this article. He likely recons that there will be no place for an ideological vacillator in Trudeau’s fascist regime. He has enough contacts and linkages to stay out of the gulags but he knows enough to avoid the inevitable future meals of their own.

  14. Wonder if Coyne and Jonathan Kay still hang out with that snot nosed Paikin at the Rosedale club Toronto – smoking cigars in between sips of Scotch while waxing philosophical over the plight of the aboriginal folks in Canada.
Those F’kers couldn’t be more out of touch with reality if they freaking tried. Coyne et.al truly think they’re a cut above everyone else.
I haven’t forgotten as well his columns telling everyone to vote Liberal/Trudeau…and why? To punish Harper for getting rid of the census requirement of jail time for non compliance.
    HUH????

Effing A hole of the first order. GFY. Yeah, it runs deep with me.
    Matt Gurney is another one.

  15. Coyne, like most Canadians, is a moral coward.
He’s a “you don’t need” person. A statist no less than Juthtin Weirdeau.
Add journalist and it makes him a supreme asshole.
You can be sure he doesn’t think lowly, blue collar proles should be able to get any information except from approved sources and that real Canadians would never read Brietbart or watch Rebel anyway.
He’s an elitist who needs to break rocks the rest of his days, shackled to the Coward of the Cottage.

  16. Saw him one time holding court in D’Arcy McGees pub while I was in Ottawa visiting my son. Along with six or seven other media types who I didn’t recognize at a table and who were hanging on his every word as if he were the fng Dalai Lama.
Easily the most punchable face that night.

  17. Given all the other liberal agendas Coyne has embraced the only explanation for this must be a greater collapse in readership and the only thing I can say to that is: learn to code buddy.

  18. When I was a kid, on cold winter nights, I listen to shortwave radio. There were several rebel stations that broadcast from remote areas (Ex: South America) and talked about everything from Jesus to World Domination. That was 1966. I’m sure in this day and age, we can bypass the Liberals and Justin Trudeau if we need to get a message out.

    Use your imagination.

  19. Since when have ‘basic dictatorships” like the LIberal/CCP Party have NOT controlled all Media… thats what “Basic dictatorships” do…
Guybolt, Turdhole and other fwench supremacist bigots from Queerbek have to control your thoughts and the information you receive… all basic dictatorships operate in the same way.
