Bell is cancelling its all-sports format on radio stations in Vancouver, Winnipeg and Hamilton, barely a week after announcing hundreds of job cuts at media properties across Canada. TSN 1040 AM in Vancouver, TSN 1290 AM in Winnipeg and TSN 1150 AM in Hamilton will no longer be all-sports stations, Bell announced on Tuesday.
The laid off Bell staff could get jobs installing solar panels and/or windmills.

I listen to my local am station every morning for traffic and weather, news and sports before I get up. So they get around 1/2 hour of my ears most days. Earlier this week their update on US impeachment included the outright lie that Trump’s speech was hours BEFORE the Capital nonsense. Probably got this verbatim from AP or CNN.
Almost all of the media in Canada is owned by either Rogers or Bell, other than the government owned propaganda network.
Radio in major markets is all owned by Rogers, Bell and also Corus.
In small markets prominent local families have owned radio stations for decades.

This isn’t surprising. How many here remember the old CKO all-news stations from some 40 years ago? As I recall, all news all the time wasn’t drawing in listeners, so it started carrying sports. Even that didn’t save the network and it eventually went off the air in the late 1980s.
In addition, it was in a limited market. I don’t recall it being available in Saskatoon, where I lived in the early ’80s and, when I lived in southern Alberta, I was well out of its range.
I have to admit that I rarely listened to it.
Hmmmm…let me see. Bell among others like Telus and Rogers received more than $250 million in CERB payments while doling out billions in shareholder dividends. Good luck employees.

I used to listen to Team 1260 in Edmonton, they were pretty good at first, but good grief they went downhill FAST, really became just a bunch of self congratulatory backslapping and verbal masturbation. Haven’t listened in years. FM jocks have all become a bunch of super woke idiots, too, I might come back when they start talking about music again. Plus every time some of them open their mouths my IQ drops five more points, haven’t got any left to spare.
Hell, even my favourite racing related podcasts aren’t immune, one with an IndyCar podcast who shall remain nameless went for a full 55 minutes on BLM (no, I didn’t listen to all of it, just kept skipping ahead). That was the last one downloaded, haven’t even looked since.

If you want good radio, try Sirius XM. There’s a large selection with something for just about everybody. I’m listening to Channel 76/Symphony Hall right now. I took over my father’s account when I inherited his truck and, about a year ago, it became available on the Internet as well.
Commercial radio is a rough and nasty business. I’ve long lost track of the various stations on FM here in Edmonton. It seems that they keep changing owners and callsigns.
When I’m in a vehicle that has Sirius XM I’m flipping between Willies Roadhouse or BBKing’s Bluesville. Old country songs or old blues.
I sometimes wonder what the programmers at Sirius XM are thinking. My two favourite channels are Met Opera Radio and Symphony Hall. Up until a few weeks ago, MOR was on 75 and SH on 76. It was easy for me to switch between them on my truck’s radio, particularly while I’m driving.
Then it was decided to push MOR to 355. I now have to horse around with scrolling through menus to find it. Channel 75 is now taken up by Elvis.
That sucks BA and a bit distracting. Don’t let the Karens catch you fiddling with that.
On our radio there is a favorites setting that highlights 5 choices.

As a trucker I prefer XM patriot, family talk, and radio classics. Music trends to blues and eclectic music tastes. It depends on my mood.

I am not sure I’d call 1060AM CKMX Calgary a “highly successful” format change as the article implies. I have to admit I haven’t tuned in most recently, but I did notice that there was not too many advertisements at all on the channel when I used to. This used to be one of the channels I would tune in on shortwave but they killed that transmitter off long ago. Lack of on air personalities other than to announce the comedian and if you listen to it for about 5 days in a row you’ve heard all of their content.

He began to let more of it show on the radio so i just switched off. The drive home with hustler patterson was pretty good. Overall ill miss them as CJOB sucks big time.
Used to have QR out of Calgary on constantly, listened to 960 rarely, only for Flames games, used to buy The Herald, used to have the sports package on tv, about 2011 started noticing small lies especially in the Herald, never bought one since. By 2013/14 the radio had started to follow suit, by the time that dildo headed fellow came on QR it was back to XM only for radios, expensive but necessary for sanity, 59, old country, 60 new, mostly real country music, if you want the fifth of crown with the tailgate down theres 56 and great blues on 74 etc. The sports package went off the day that really dumba Dumba kid in hockey did his dopey homage to a bunch of creeps burning down hard working peoples lives. Since there are no comedians anymore I sometimes listen to the 14 year old girls or tony (fake news) king do the all covid covid news. Woked and Karened your way out of business, smart folks.
I know nothing about the radio business or how any of them stay on the air. That being said in Edmonton there is one all news channel and one all sports channel. I haven’t listened to either for so long I don’t even know if they are still on the air. I only listen to radio in my truck and as of late I haven’t spent a lot of time driving. Oh well at least there is the interweb. I don’t have TV either.
