The visit to a Russian grocery store reminds me of something that the National Lampoon printed in the mid-1970s. Burger King (I think) had an ad campaign that included the jingle “Hold the pickles. As far as I’m concerned, the whole problem with the markets comes down to gambling rather than investing.
The difference? Investments are long term purchases and gambling is quick gain or loss. Things like short-selling.

The problem with the market is there is no market in the old sense. Old fundamentals are out the window cuz the the central banks are backstopping the market and governments (e.g. pension funds) are buying on dips aka the plunge protection team. We end up with these asset bubbles. There’s no creative destruction as we had in old business cycles to weed out the zombies. Instead they throw lifelines to zombies . Worstest effect is they are destroying our savings to pro up the market. The rot goes to the core.

The visit to a Russian grocery store reminds me of something that the National Lampoon printed in the mid-1970s. Burger King (I think) had an ad campaign that included the jingle “Hold the pickles. Hold the lettuce. Special orders don’t upset us. All we ask is that you let us have it your way.” (Yes, I’m ashamed that I’m using up synapses remembering that). The Lampoon announced that Russia was putting in place a new fast food chain named Burger Czar, where the “customers” stood in a two-block-long line, and were told when they got to the front of the line that the shop was all out of food. The motto “Have it OUR way.”

CNBC Squawk Box had on this morning former Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, which made for an interesting interview. Ohanian looks like a typical techno-geek — bearded, long-haired, very cross-eyed, and geek-t-shirt cool — but unlike other zillionaire tech-oligarchs, Ohanian is polite, thoughtful and deferential on camera. Redddit has, of course, a bad name with the establishment media, for harboring Trump supporters, and that made the interview a tad interesting with the CNBC biggies.
The major liberal-Democrat on the show — host Andrew Ross Sorkin (I dislike people who use three names) — was the most aggressive with Ohanian, defending the billionaire short gods. But the techie guy parried his aggressive questions rather easily. In the midst of his answers, Ohanian came out with an interesting aside: “And we can all agree on that the social media revolution has handed power back to ordinary citizens”. Sorkin — the NYT guy and defender all that is Democrat and powerful — was taken aback by that aside, and only smiled back at the tack-fellow through clenched teeth.
Is that aside true? Up to now, yes. But one wonders, with our new Orwellian world and Room 101.
