  1. While I was in Grade 10, I belonged to my junior high school’s cinema club. We rented and showed movies to the students.

One of them was The Birds and I remember one showing in particular. The attic scene with Tippi Hedren caused a number of the girls in the audience to loudly shriek. I was sitting by the projector with my fellow club members and I’m sure we all had the same thought: “Good grief!”

The movie is set in Bodega Bay, California. A number of years ago, I spoke via satellite with a fellow ham who happened to be in the area on holiday, as I recall. He mentioned the town’s association with the film and I jokingly asked if Tippi Hedren was there, so which he answered “No”. No mention of any strange bird activity.

A few days later, on the same satellite, I spoke with him again. He asked me “Guess who’s coming to Bodega Bay?” Sure enough, she was going to be in town.

  2. (Not a movie for a 9 year old. Just saying)
Some of the movies our parents took us kids to see were really not for children.
Do you remember the movie the Iliad and the Odyssey?
The one-eyed cyclops scared the crap out of me, especially when he started eating the men.
I was so scared I spent most of the time in the lobby so I didn’t have to look at the monster.

      1. Yes. I had the wrong name. Here’s what Cliffnotes has to say:
“The 1955 adaptation of Homer’s The Odyssey (Ulysses is the Latin translation of Odysseus), features some pretty cheesy special effects, but is still nonetheless a surprisingly literate version. Although condensed, the film stays mostly true to the spirit of the original work. Features impressive acting by the inimitable Kirk Douglas as Ulysses, and Anthony Quinn as Antinous, the most persistent of Penelope’s suitors.”

  3. I know Hitchcock was a master, but I never really understood The Birds. They’re birds, get a broom!

  4. My scared the crap out of me was the “Blob” at about 7 years old. Had to change the channel it effected me that much.

    1. For me it was the Spawn’s eulogy for the guy he got his name and future career from.
