1. As compared to what ? 2. At what cost ? 3. What hard evidence do you have ?
– Thomas Sowell, a response to all proposals.
Larry, maybe you should read some more of Mr. Sowell’s work.
O.W.G. , perhaps you misunderstood I was quoting Thomas Sowell and yes, everyone would gain from reading his books. Mostly, I’ve watched interviews with him about his books. His is a towering intellect and paradigm example of the power of valid statistical analysis in pursuit of the truth about claims.
That 3 part axiom is a quote from Dr. Thomas Sowell. It is a shorthand guide to critical analysis for exposing utopian policies based on false premises leading to unsound conclusion. Follow the money, follow the data using statistical analysis, that is what economists are trained to do.
Dr. Sowell, abandoned the Marxism of his youth with the first job he had as an economist. It was with the U.S. Dept. of Labour. He came up with an innovation that would have saved much time and expense. To his shock, none of his superiors were at all interested. His experience taught him to be skeptical of gov’t. bureaucracy which operates so often in it’s own interests not of the public who fund them.
Auditor Generals require an army of accountants doing cost/benefit analysis to keep gov’t. growth from metastasizing. In free countries, they are as vital as an independent judiciary and justice system. Which is why in Canada, they are deliberately under-resourced.
Good to see you are not just typing for the sake of doing so. I would suggest that you could simplify explanations.
It was the simplified rather than the expansive that you had snipped at. As a fellow reader of Dr. Sowell I recognized the first post as his thinking, and smiled.
A real advantage to having folks like Sowell around is that their existence disproves and discredits all the BLM bullshit.
Not just BLM. The few credible white racists that I’ve met, I’ve always had the same thoughts in my head: “I know of 3 or 4 Americans with black skin that the the finest and most intellectual people you could hope to meet. I’d much rather be talking to one of them than to you, regardless of skin colour.”
Thomas Sowell is the godfather of HBD, the study of racial and ethnic differences in behaviour and intelligence. He was writing about ethnicity and life outcomes around the world back in the 1970s and 80s, greatly influencing later thinkers like Steve Sailer, amongst others, who expanded on his work.
I don’t agree with all of Sowell’s theories, like American blacks learning their anti-social behaviour from white rednecks in the South, but he was one of the first modern writers to stress the importance of ethnicity to behaviour and socio-economic status by comparing various groups scattered across numerous countries: Germans, Italians, blacks, Chinese, Irish, Jews, etc.
I’m not that interested in charter schools so I probably won’t read Sowell’s new book, but the guy will go down in history as an intellectual titan and original thinker of the first order.
I’ve read many of his books and obviously have many more to read. He’s a force of nature!
Put his ideas in the hands of Candice Owens, if they aren’t already, and you’ll have the person who should be America’s first female president, black or white.
DrD, exactly, and that young lady would be an excellent leader!!!
I think it is unfortunate thst Thomas Sowell is not better known. You do not often see him interviewed on MSM. His books are not often featured in major publicstions . . . the New York Times, G&M, etc. He is brilliant, but kept in the background as a public personality. I am pretty sure his conservatism plays a major role, but Sowell could convincingly play the race card, but it is not in his nature.
Neither he nor a fellow traveller Walter E. Williams, or many like them would think of using something so ignorant and demeaning as the “race” card . Mr. Williams is an economist and I believe he is retired from his professorship, but he could simplify economics so that even Trudeau might be able to understand the basics. Well, that probably was a step too far. He used to fill in for Rush years ago.
Have read several of his book with my favourite “Intellectuals and Society” in my personal library. Just a jewel and I agree that because he is a conservative thinker he is not more in the limelight.
My youngest brother introduced me to him and his writings in the late 70’s – I think the book was called “Ethnic America” and was his doctoral thesis. My brother also introduced me to another book called “Holidays in Hell” – about vacationing in countries at war – Lebanon was still in its 20 year civil war at that time.
Back in the 1990’s the Los Angeles school system was broke , taxes were already high , and students scored poorly compared to the national average
Rush Limbaugh pointed out in his book that LA spent $32,000 per student on education and he pointed out for a class of 20 students came out to $640,000 per year.
Rush said at those prices he could hire the best teachers , double their wages , rent a fancy ball room at the Beverly Hilton for a classroom , drive the kids to school in limousines , and still have money left over.
One of the greatest Americans alive today. Definitely the smartest. I listen to his interviews all the time. He should be held up as an example to all African-Americans. Instead we get the likes of Al “Freddie’s Fashion Mart” Sharpton, Jesse Jerkson, Talcum X, Colon Kaperdick, Jay Z, and a million other wastoids. Take a bow media/Democrats. The state of Black America is because of you.
Years back Rush Limbaugh was on the Donahue show … which of course has a very liberal audience so he polled them ….. how many here believe in abortion rights ? …. all the hands went up …… how many believe in gay rights ? … all the hands went up …. how many believe blacks should be given special treatment because life is tough for them because of the slave trade hundreds of years ago ? …. again , all the hands went up.
Rush then hung his head and said …… I concede , maybe abortion has some merit after all. Donahue’s jaw dropped , the surprised audience gave a light clap of approval .
Rush then stood up and said he had a perfect solution ….. he said if life is tough for the gays and the blacks we should just abort them in the uterus .
NO NO NO !!!! …. said the audience as they leaped from their seats fists shaking …… then they realized they were against abortion , at least for that split second.
Rush had that all planned out and I thought it was brilliant.
+++ Arnie, Rush has the ability to point out the absurd by using absurdity. A smart guy.
