China didn’t warn public of likely pandemic for 6 key days
In the six days after top Chinese officials secretly determined they likely were facing a pandemic from a new coronavirus, the city of Wuhan at the epicenter of the disease hosted a mass banquet for tens of thousands of people; millions began traveling through for Lunar New Year celebrations.
President Xi Jinping warned the public on the seventh day, Jan. 20. But by that time, more than 3,000 people had been infected during almost a week of public silence, according to internal documents obtained by The Associated Press and expert estimates based on retrospective infection data.
Six days.
That delay from Jan. 14 to Jan. 20 was neither the first mistake made by Chinese officials at all levels in confronting the outbreak, nor the longest lag, as governments around the world have dragged their feet for weeks and even months in addressing the virus.
But the delay by the first country to face the new coronavirus came at a critical time — the beginning of the outbreak. China’s attempt to walk a line between alerting the public and avoiding panic set the stage for a pandemic that has infected more than 2 million people and taken more than 128,000 lives.
“This is tremendous,” said Zuo-Feng Zhang, an epidemiologist at the University of California, Los Angeles. “If they took action six days earlier, there would have been much fewer patients and medical facilities would have been sufficient. We might have avoided the collapse of Wuhan’s medical system.”
Other experts noted that the Chinese government may have waited on warning the public to stave off hysteria, and that it did act quickly in private during that time.
But the six-day delay by China’s leaders in Beijing came on top of almost two weeks during which the national Center for Disease Control did not register any cases from local officials, internal bulletins obtained by the AP confirm. Yet during that time, from Jan. 5 to Jan. 17, hundreds of patients were appearing in hospitals not just in Wuhan but across the country.
The US-China trade deal was signed January 15th.

The CBC includes in its puff piece on LeBlanc that “the misinformation has shifted to conspiracy theories about what triggered the pandemic — claims that it was cooked up in a lab, for example.”

Law professor Jonathan Turley, no conservative he, points out in a column that US embassy officials back in January 2018 “alerted U.S. officials of serious problems in the lab which was conducting risky research on bats, the very source of COVIT-19.”
He concludes “There is a story here. Not just on whether the lab was the source of the outbreak but whether the media blinded itself to that possibility.”
The only question in my mind is the extent to which it’s willful blindness.

It would be one thing if China had failed to warn the world because they didn’t know what they were dealing with.
But they did, and with WHO complicity covered it up so as not to interfere with various festivities, particularly in Wuhan.
On January 14th, 2020 China, through the WHO, lied to the world stating the coronavirus was not contagious human to human.
Without any reasonable doubt they knew it was and had suppressed any possibility of discovery by them or anyone else.
Then, like their Democrat allies busy with their shampeachment, when they could no longer deny that, they blamed America.
In both cases, the CPC and DNC were too busy looking after their own interests to give any thought to their citizens’ welfare.
One wanted to party (Chinese New Year etc) while other wanted to be the party (displacing elected POTUS with Ukraine hoax).
Now they can both be held accountable. Woe betide any politician who puts China’s interest ahead of pissed off electorate.

There’s a belief going around that once China understood how bad this was going to be for them, they downplayed it on the world staged so that if they went down so would everybody else. You can trust China…to be asshole.
At this point, 99.997% of Canadians have survived the pandemic. Outside of vulnerable locations more like 99.999%.
Our rather clumsy response has been to shut down most of the economic and social structure, while very slowly and ineffectively improving conditions in the vulnerable locations.
It’s not like this started yesterday. But the response is far from agile. And I would submit it may not even be rational.
Very important for the political opposition to place the government on notice that we don’t want this sort of program to be prolonged or brought in again, next time, target the actual high risk populations with more effective precautions and leave the herd to its task of gaining immunity. (I might look at something more lethal differently, this is not exactly the black death that wiped out two thirds of European populations).
I think part of the problem is that leftist (and perhaps more than just leftist) bureaucrats and officials are somewhat enjoying their newfound powers to dictate to the general public. Another problem is that most progressives have signalled to each other that this should go on until Trump falls below a safe level in the public opinion polls. Without actually putting it in writing, you know the light bulb went off around mid-February, here’s our one chance … and it doesn’t stop at the border, a secondary target is the resource sector of the economy.
Greens are particularly authoritarian in their thinking, they have easily drifted into the “keep strangers out” rhetoric (which is what they were basically saying before this anyway). Now it’s somewhat fashionable to be an isolationist in certain parts of BC and maybe other provinces too.
Some of this thinking is going to prolong the inevitable exposure of the general population to the herd immunity process. There are signs all around that many people have had this come and go already. We just don’t know if that means later immunity. But at some point we can’t go on living scared, it’s perhaps worse than the alternative.
I would rather be at risk in a free North America than safe in a tightly controlled space like China. And I know that attitude will cause an enormous tut tut from the left who want nothing more than that tightly controlled space.
It is all a bit ridiculous too, the social distancing doesn’t really work out in the community, you have to go closer to various total strangers on a regular basis and the people you need to interact with have been doing that all day with the herd. So what’s the real point of it?

Have been following this guy for a little while.
Short story is that he’s married to a Chinese girl and life was dreamy up until about a year ago when “things changed”.
He’s still with his wife, and the kids, but his opinion on the chicoms has really darkened.
