Do the press corps have amy responsibilities to the public during a wartime like situation? Or is it perfectly fine to scream the equivalent of “Fire, Fire!” in a crowded theatre?
If President Trump is a wartime president, does that make Washington reporters wartime correspondents?
Even before coronavirus, I often wondered if today’s press corps had covered the allied landing at D-Day in June 1944, if their stories would have led with the disastrous American landing on Omaha Beach, the paratroopers who dropped miles away from their targets and the submersible tanks that sunk to the bottom of the English Channel before ever touching land.
Indeed, if each of these genuine military setbacks had been the lead story, the American people might have lost the will to fight the rest of the war.
Well, I’ve seen similar more recently. Walter Cronkite emotionally stating that that Crazy Asian War ™ was lost after the Tet Offensive, a battle that was at the time the beginning of the end of the Viet Cong and a major defeat for them. His words and the effect of his words as “the conscience of the American People” on the attitude of the American public turned what was a major defeat of the Viet Cong into an eventual victory. One may agree or disagree with that conflict but old Walt’s words put a knife in the American efforts there and arguably caused more US deaths.
Yeah, they are definitely wartime correspondents, just with a Chinese accent.

When you celebrate all of this, just remember that invoking the wartime thing releases insurance companies from the responsibility to pay benefits, like during 9/11.
If the United States were governed by the sort of men who did so in 1944, the Chinese would already have been re-paid for their act of bioterror with atomic warfare—the same warfare that was planned for the invasion of Japan.

Meanwhile, Americans would finally go back to work full time, making good money making things for Americans.
Forced to charge what it costs an American to build things to last, the companies that sell you crap cheaply made in China would go out of business forever. There would be jobs for men who know how to keep things in good repair, though.
Occasionally a hard-left newspaper would review a maudlin eyewitness account of the hydrogen bombing of Wuhan or Beijing. Few copies would be sold.
Decent people in the United States would agree: the Reds had it coming, and it’ll be a cold day in hell before Fu Manchu tries picking a fight with US again!

For your information, the Chinese Communists would have been wiped out before the Japanese invasion, except the Roosevelt administration called them agrarian reformers and forced a ceasefire on the Nationalist government.
Of course, after the breakup of the Soviet empire, we learned that the Roosevelt administration was lousy with Communist infiltrators. And of course at the time the Russians were the worst collectivist in the world and actively supported the Chinese Communists.

He never spoke of politics to me when I was young but I listened to him when he spoke to his friends. It was not difficult to tell who was respected and who was not. The change in his posture as he listened to the report of MacArthur’s return from Korea, spoke to me of his deep respect for him. I think Winston was the only hero of that war that he respected more.

You’re referring to MacArthur, of course, and he was relieved of command by Harry Truman for defying him during the Korean War.

The objective of the press was never to print the truth. It was to sell people crap they didn’t need—sold by outfits that Wuhan flu has forced to close down, probably for good.
