For tonight’s entertainment, we offer you an extremely beautiful rendition of Hallelujah. Julia Westlin is from Sweden but now lives in Canada with her partner, David MeShow. As someone who knows very little about music and singing, I do have a few questions for those of you who are more musically inclined. How was the audio for this video produced? Does Ms. Westlin sing different renditions of the song in different octaves and then they’re all combined together? Most curious.
Your best tips of news events over the past 24 hours are much appreciated!

No it isn’t actually.
Actually it is – radium 226, promethium 147, and tritium phosphoresce green and were (radium) or still are used in watches.

Hey – I have an idea. Lets diversify the economy by building a magnesium smelter!
The mysterious Magnesium Company of Canada
Oh, wait.
He was always part of the big lie….he’s never denounced the CO2 cult for what it is…he’s just ratcheting things up a notch to appease the feds wrt to the looming Teck decision. If you were expecting Mr Kenney to say all the right things re the climate madness and lead Alberta into the promised land, he’s not that guy unfortunately.
Jason Kenney is rapidly becoming like Andrew Scheep.
He was there a long time ago. He outlived his usefulness ditching Notley. Find someone else to replace him.
Jason Kenny did not say, Did Not Say, that “Alberta has to go green over time”. An anonymous headline writer said that.
According to Braid’s text of Kenny’s remarks he did say “I have a firm grasp of the obvious. There is no reasonable person that can deny that in the decades to come we will see a gradual shift from hydrocarbon-based energy to other forms of energy”.
Timeline: decades to come. Gradual shift … to other forms of energy. “Sources we haven’t even considered yet”.
Jason Kenny’s not gone “green” except in Don Braid’s imagination and a sensationalist headline writer.
Ezra confronts Omar Khadr.
Sparks fly…

Oh look a Rebel reporter assaulted by Aladdin’s JBTs again, must be a day that ends with a letter y.
Bravo Ezra! It took courage to call out a terrorist in public.
In Monday’s episode of the “Ezra Levant Show”, Ezra describes how he was headed to Halifax to hear Omar Khadr speak at Dalhousie University. Lo and behold, Omar was on the same flight– what a great opportunity for a journalist.
Omar was already seated when Ezra got on the plane and had his head turned away as if he didn’t want to be spotted by Ezra. Of course, Ezra saw him. Upon deplaning Ezra spoke to the co-pilot and flight assistant and asked them whether they knew that they had a terrorist on board who is on the no-fly list. They replied to the negative and said that Ezra ought to contact Air Canada. How incredible! Once Ezra deplaned he noticed Omar at the luggage-wait area. Then what you saw in the video took place.
The siĺly grin on Khadr’s face was sickening. He certainly was in no hurry to walk away from Ezra. Then to have ‘Barney Fife’ ask Ezra to ‘move’ along, stop filming and then not to cross the road — just anywhere — was evident of how the police state operates in Halifax. Surprised he didn’t tell Ezra to shut up!
Of course Omar knew who Ezra is. He probably read Ezra’s book:
“Guantanamo’s Child:
The Untold Story of Omar Khadr”
By: Ezra Levant
Tuesday’s report from Ezra will be about how the rest of the day turned out including Omar’s appearance at Dal. Stay tuned.

The aircraft likely flew over the US on the way to Halifax. Was he on the passenger list reported to the FBI? Perhaps he wants to explain to the US judge that sentenced him why he now denies his guilt. He either lied to the US court or lied to the Canadian court. Another 8 years in Gitmo would do him good.
F that.

Andrew Lawton’s comments:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UNd7jJWsSrc
Khadr “played the room like a violin”…. he…. “never renounced his terrorism — nor the family business.”
In the past he had said that killing Sgt Speer was the best day of his life.
Giving the talk in Halifax the audience was not allowed to ask about the ‘incident’ nor ask questions about his settlement with the Canadian government. No one wanted to talk to Andrew Lawton about why they were there but at the end they gave Khadr a standing ovation.
According to an interview Andrew had with Ezra Levant about the event, Ezra said that Guantanamo’s Child, never renounced his past actions and his religiosity is still apparently in place.
So if he was there not to answer questions why was he there? The hardest question is one that was never asked. Has Omar ever found peace?

See tonight’s show if you get a chance. Ezra was at first refused entry into the big event in Halifax! He politely argued his his way in after a 15 minute talk with security.
However, the show was a big nothing burger. Khadr gave no information, said nothing of note, and gave foggy, even vague answers to nothing burger questions. The “incident” or the Canadian $ settlement were not permitted in the Q & A!
The biggest news is that the American and Israeli governments were made aware about Khadr’s fly over on American territory when it is absolutely forbidden. Ezra gave an interview on Glen Beck’s Blaze TV and one other network and the Israeli newspaper responded by saying that this incident was “madness”.
Be sure that this isn’t the last you’ll hear about this. Air Canada’s administration was not aware of the fact that he was not on the list. This is big bad news for certain people!

Here’s another song called Alleluia sung by Matthew Curtis.

So how is this done? Is one singer’s voice altered by a computer?
First a rough track is laid down . this track will be used as a guide for the singer to follow. That’s what he is listening to over the headphones. It will not be part of the final recording. Each part of the music is sung separately.
Next the singer lays down the first track following the rough track, followed by the second track , third, fourth and so on.
In the case above the singer is singing most likely raw with no computer alterations. That’s what makes him so good. In the case of these videos they film it as well.
In other cases sometimes the engineer has to go in afterwards and do some pitch corrections if the singer sings a note a bit flat or sharp using a harmonizer. The fixed note is then cut and spliced into the recording and the bad note is removed or just altered.
It is possible nowadays to completely change the key of a song while still maintaining the song’s tempo. In the past when tracked tape was used that was impossible without changing the tempo.
Does this help?
Done here too:

Here’s a great video showing the interactions between voices using Beethoven’s symphony No.7 2nd mvt.

It’s been a while since I dabbled in audio but even a decade ago the consumer audio programs were already playing with what is called “zero latency recording” where a person can record a track while the already-recorded tracks play with no delay or “offset” of the new track to the previous tracks. It is likely she recorded the primary vocal track and then recorded the rest one by one while the recorded tracks play in her headphones.
Kate, Robert. Haven’t been in a recording studio in 35 odd years. Back then 32 track 3″ wide analogue recording tape was the ultimate technology. Each track can be and usually is recorded separately, edited and mixed down to 2 tracks (stereo). So A band might lay down the drums and bass. It is then played back over headphones and maybe guitars, vocals etc added. In the studio all mikes may be live but the mixer board determines what goes onto the tape with, back then, up to 32 different tracks. Digital now is endless. You can record a track, while listening to it record another and another and mix them however.
Example https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ow2-FHTvyw
MIDI, Musical Digital Interface has made any thing possible including copying someone’s voice precisely.
Anybody interested has probably figured out multi-track recording by now. An actual demonstration using digital (computer) capture is here:
One thing to understand though is that sound waves are analogue. At some point they have to be converted to digital. That is the job of the microphone and at the output end, the speakers. Humans actual have a rather limited sound range at 20 – 20,000 Hertz, regrettably decreasing with age. One of the reasons I laugh when the idiot pundits talk about a “dog-whistle” to the base. Humans can’t hear a dog whistle as the frequency is beyond our range, but not dogs. And if you (pundit) heard it , doesn’t that say more about you?
Sorry if I am boring everybody but on a further note I was wracking my brain for older muti-track vocals and one example I finally remembered is Carole King’s “Tapestry” (1971). Most of the songs have at least a partial second harmony vocal track, sung by Ms King, probably on a 24 track recorder exemplified by Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WMGBcS0h-Ng&list=PLkLimRXN6NKyvtIxiC7Y-p1b9FcQLCwFP&index=9
Joni Mitchell did sing back-up on some tracks but King’s distinctive voice can be heard behind the main vocal track on almost all of the songs.
God I must be old. How many people hear even know who I am talking about?
Change “hear” to “here” please.
I do Rick … and I’m not THAT old.
This sounds like it looks, multi tracking vocals, but I also hear some echo or reverb effects, and delay or advancement of some tracks. The Beatles virtually invented double (and more) tracking. The classic example is “The Night Before” … https://vimeo.com/296510993
They double-tracked both lead and harmonizing vocals with delays, and even double-tracked the lead guitar break – John and Paul each playing the same lead on different guitars each with a very different tone.
Makes music sound big and lush … like an orchestra or choir. And The Doobie Brother essentially double-tracked LIVE with two drummers, and three guitarists
Leonard Cohen’s song “Hallelujah” has a catchy tune but that’s all. The word “Hallelujah” means “Praise the Lord”, and is highly inappropriate for the lyrics of this song, which are primarily sexual in nature.
Cohen’s title is not only sacrilegious in this context, it is contemptible to suggest by its use that it shares something in common with the song that for most Christians first comes to mind when we hear the title, that being the “Hallelujah Chorus” from Handel’s Messiah. Indeed, Christians and non-Christians alike aware of its significance and its history continue to follow the example of King George II who, when hearing it for the first time, rose in awe during its performance. “For the Lord God omnipotent reigneth … forever and ever … Hallelujah!”.
The story of the king standing during the Hallelujah chorus is not established in fact. If indeed he did rise, it might have been just to stretch his legs, it’s a mighty long oratorio to listen to at one sitting.
As for this song, the first verse is about the music composed by biblical King David.
The second verse mixes two old testament stories, when David saw Bathsheba bathing on the roof of an adjacent building and had her brought to him for sex, and the betrayal of Samson by Delilah. Don’t know what the connection is.
Third verse is something about the despair of being in love.
Fourth verse is somewhat like the third.
Fifth verse was about sex.
Not sure at all what the sixth verse is about.
That’s all that are included in the recorded song, but it is comprised of 78 verses in total and I have no clue what the rest are about.
The story of the king standing during the Hallelujah chorus is not established in fact. If indeed he did rise, it might have been just to stretch his legs, it’s a mighty long oratorio to listen to at one sitting.
That’s the story I heard. The Hallelujah Chorus comes at the end of the second part of Messiah, which, depending upon who’s performing it, lasts about 2.5 hours.
Cohen’s lyrical references, although sexual, are Biblical, and the use of “Hallelujah!” is therefore entirely appropriate. The use of sexual metaphors to express religious experience is also Biblical–see Song of Songs.
I wouldn’t say the Cohen’s song is itself “sacrilegious” but it is certainly not one you would want to hear in the setting of a religious service.
Cohen was generous enough to allow songwriters to create other versions, some of which are very appropriate for a church service, especially Easter or Christmas. Here’s an Easter version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MC1Nvn4Bk0Y
“I wouldn’t say the Cohen’s song is itself ‘sacrilegious’ but it is certainly not one you would want to hear in the setting of a religious service.”
It’s a terrific song.
Cohen’s references aren’t Christian of course, they’re Jewish. But as the Hebrew Bible is the Christian Old Testament, it’s not surprising they would be viewed from that perspective. I have to say that my favourite Cohen song is Dance Me to the End of Love which has both (Hebrew) Biblical and Holocaust connotations.
What always flabbergasts me is hearing how many couples actually choose Hallelujah as their wedding song!
I mean, have they ever bothered to read the lyrics?
Indeed, any couple who included Hallelujah as a wedding song should have had their heads examined. It’s a beautiful song with a haunting melody, but the original verses become darker and darker as the song progresses.
From what I’ve read, Cohen liberally granted licensing to allow creation and performance of different verses to the song, often without any licensing fees. Some of the variations are very, very good.
” Does Ms. Westlin sing different renditions of the song in different octaves and then they’re all combined together?”
It sounds great but is it in different octaves? The split screen hints that rather than use ‘backing vocalists’ she’s simply recording various tracks of her own voice and combining it all on one track. i wonder how a live performance would work? I assume the backing vocalist portion of her voice would be supplied from a recording.
Sorry. Warren Zoell supplied the answer earlier.
Multi-track recording.
Nothing new here. First heard it in a performance on radio by Les Paul and Mary Ford back in 1951.
HOW HIGH THE MOON LES PAUL MARY FORD 1951
Not to be a jerk but that is technically the forerunner of the Tape Echo Machine. The first head records and second, third, fourth heads play back, sounds like an echo, can be sped-up or sustained.
http://www.roland.co.uk/blog/demystifying-magic-tape-echo/
Multi track is a number of separately recorded tracks mixed down to two, left and right. If the sound is on both it sounds like it is in the middle.

I refuse to attack a fat cow for being fat and stupid, it’s just not right to criticize a fat cow for being so.
Got a notice at work in Calgary yesterday. “There’s a protest going on in front of City Hall today, try to avoid on your commute home.”
So I walked to the train across the street from the planned protest. The big banner, 20′ long, said something to the effect of “Respect the Wet’suwet’en Culture” Between a dozen and 20 protestors, moving out onto McLeod Trail northbound every time the crossing walk light changed, and staying there after the green returned until the police told them to finish crossing. Wait for the next light, repeat. There were at least a dozen police there. I thanked a couple of them for putting up with the fools so the rest of us don’t have to, they chuckled.
None of the protesters were the right ethnic type – there were some plains Indians, but the ‘Tsimsian groups actually look a lot like Mongolians (minus the epicanthic fold). And, just like the Teck protests last week, they probably called the police to ensure their own safety. They were keeping a lot of people from getting home after work, and a couple of pickups of rig workers would otherwise have cleared them out pretty fast.
It’s worth noting that the Wet’suwet’en hereditary chiefs are not the elected leadership of their communities – they’re the decedents of royalty. The elected leadership has signed on to the pipeline and wants the jobs they’ll bring. And the hereditary chiefs want their cut of any profits made from “their” former lands, because they’re members of the lucky sperm club and chose their parents well.
There are indigenous protests in Ontario over events in BC too. They’re blocking VIA Rail lines.

Bill 40: Here’s why Valérie Plante and other Quebec mayors are fuming
A former teacher, Education Minister Jean-François Roberge rammed through a sweeping reform of Quebec’s education system over the weekend.
There were surprises in last-minute amendments the Coalition Avenir Québec government tabled on Friday.
Elected school board commissioners on the French-language side were immediately and unceremoniously thrown out of office, for example.
And Quebec mayors, including Montreal’s Valérie Plante, were shocked by an unexpected twist: the school service centres that will replace boards will now have the power to force towns and cities to hand over municipal land — for free — if it’s needed to build new schools.
Meanwhile, anglophone groups are mulling a court challenge.
The bill, adopted by the National Assembly early Saturday, changes how the elementary and high school systems are organized.
But it has wide-ranging implications as it amends 84 pieces of provincial legislation. It will change teacher training requirements, for example, as well as rules regarding the bumping-up of student marks
Why were French-language commissioners turfed?
One of Roberge’s amendments led to the immediate removal of all elected school commissioners on the French-language side. That includes those representing the Commission scolaire de Montréal, Quebec’s biggest board with 114,000 students.
Roberge’s original plan was to eject those commissioners at the end of February. The new timetable was reportedly an attempt to prevent French-language school boards from following through on a threat to fight the law in court.
The French-language boards will be run by current unelected directors general until the service centres are up and running. In the French system, there will no longer be elections. Instead, parents on school governing boards will elect members of service centre boards.
Unlike commissioners, members of service centre boards will be volunteers who are not remunerated.
Were English-language commissioners also removed?
No. They will stay in their positions until November, as originally planned. At that point, elections are to be held. Unlike the French-side, the new English service centres will be run by boards elected by universal suffrage. Blackie The Gay Pirate, the great environmentalist. Burns jet fuel at taxpayer expense to Africa, then burns jet fuel to Kuwait, then burns jet fuel to Greece for refueling, then burns jet fuel to Senegal, then burns jet fuel to Germany, then burns jet fuel to Canada, then will burn jet fuel to Barbados to soak up the sun. Meanwhile he wants us to cut back on driving our cars and for us to turn down our thermostats.
