Almost full circle. When I first got off the train in 1975 (3 days CPR coach from Montreal) Calgary was virtually empty, compared to today. There were still 1930’s style homes on 3rd and 2nd Ave SW and around where Eau Claire is now. Marlborough Mall was stuck out on vacant prairie. The Husky Tower was the tallest point around. You could walk across “downtown”, Bowness was a separate town, as was Midnapore.
Two lanes to the BC border and the Banff traffic circle was hitch hiker heaven. Gravel roads reigned. Hwy 22 south to Hwy 3 was pit run. I drove it. You can kiss that “carbon free in 2033” idea goodby…..it ain’t happening, our electric grids couldn’t handle the load and the idea is a Globalist joke. You know it when the CPPIB “invests” in Chinese coal corps and we shutter ours, while crippling our petroleum industry.

ABEXIT!
I arrived in Calgary a few years after you did, welcoming in 1978 in a hotel room.
By then, I think Bowness was already part of Calgary and the city had grown well past Marlborough Mall–I should know as I lived right beside the place. Getting a job, at least in my profession, was made easier if one had the right connections and made the right sort of friends in university. Up until a few years ago, I could look at just about any major oil industry project and there was a good chance that many of the people were either undergrad classmates of mine or former colleagues.
I left just when work on the C-train began. The last time I was in the downtown area was over 30 years ago and I didn’t always recognize where I was.
During the 1980s, the Getty provincial government insisted on “diversifying” the Alberta economy which, from what I saw, was a complete disaster. One monument to that folly was NovAtel, whose building was located near Deerfoot Mall. During the middle of that decade, I worked for a company that got a lot of provincial government funding and the management mis-spent much of it.
Those weren’t the only financial sinkholes I became aware of and I’ve got lots of stories to tell about them.
“During the 1980s, the Getty provincial government insisted on “diversifying” the Alberta economy which, from what I saw, was a complete disaster.”
I wonder how many tens of billions of dollars the Alberta government has spent in diversification efforts. Today we have sent most of our manufacturing to China to be done by slave labour. Why our oh-so-liberal leaders tolerate this, I’ll never understand. Wages in Alberta are too high to compete with the shithole regions of Canada much less competing with the shithole regions of the world. Diversity will only come when the Liberals succeed in turning Alberta into a shithole or we become independant and set our own policy.
During the mid-1980s, I was out of work. While I was in the library one day, I came across an Alberta government publication which not only outlined its efforts at economic diversification, but which firms that same government supported.
I contacted many of them. Some were outfits with only a handful of people that would have gone belly up without that government money. Others, like the outfit I eventually started working for, frittered away that cash. One firm that I know of was in such dire straits, even after it got funding, that it was ordered by the provincial government to merge with another one it supported or else close its doors.
A few years later, I was collecting dole again and I contacted a lot of those same companies. By then, many no longer existed because they went out of business or were bought by someone else.
From what I understood, one common factor was that those companies had lousy management and even worse financial practices.
By the time Getty left office, and was succeeded by Klein, that attempt at diversification was regarded as a failure. The investment by the provincial government in those companies resulted in a poor return.

When I left Calgary in 1979, the area north of the Trans Canada in the NE was just being developed. Work in the Sundridge area had started.
The last time I was in that part of the city was over 30 years ago. It took me a while to get my bearings as much of my old neighbourhood was surrounded by residential and light industrial areas.
I agree that Kenney hasn’t done much to advance the cause of Alberta, particularly in light of Prinz Dummkopf’s policies towards us.
BA, Alberta has far too many imports, it has destroyed your freedom, your economy, and your social fabric. There will be no separation because you have contracted the Canadian disease, SOCIALISM, DIVERSITY, AND MULTICULTURALISM.
Imports may contribute to the problem, but, let’s face it, things get hopelessly fouled up whenever the government gets involved.
You may remember the old Scientific Research Tax Credit program from the 1980s. Describing that as a trainwreck is an understatement.
There were instances of outright fraud. In one case of one company, run by a married couple, that claimed to be developing a new kind of engine. The “evidence” that was presented turned out to be old helicopter parts.
Then there were the grifters who saw the program as free money. There was a company in Calgary (one of those supported by the provincial government, like I mentioned elsewhere) that opened a brand spanking new facility in the city. When it made the news when it got its government cheque. Mysteriously, it closed its doors only a few days or weeks later. A while after it went belly up, I drove by its location, nice, shiny, and empty as it was.
Eventually, the Mulroney government had enough and shut down the program, which was started under PET.
It stayed dead for some 15 years and was revived, as I recall, under either Chretien or Martin and was called the Scientific Research and Experimental Development Tax Program. All sorts of companies hired people whose job it was to look for related tax loopholes. Those weren’t just industrial firms but accounting firms and lawyers.
As far as I know, nothing of tangible worth was ever produced by either program but, hey, it looks good on TV.

We Canadians are just small potatoes on the world stage. All of this that is happening now is according to plan and had been decided long ago. Of course, we don’t like it, but we have no say.
The Bilderberg Conference will operate under the following assumptions: the committee is held from July 24-26 2020 in Copenhagen, Denmark then will reconvene from November 2-4th 2020 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and finally from December 30 – January 1st 2021 in Krakow Poland.

We should be sad, this beautiful Canadian Country is no more.
As I’ve often said on SDA, Canadians won’t bother about anything unless it disrupts their access to NHL hockey on TV and TimBits.
I encountered someone like that several weeks ago. I ordered some Wexit hats and, on the day they arrived, I opened the package while I was going up to my floor in the elevator. I joyously showed one of them to the kid who was with me and I said something to the effect that I supported the movement.
He was young enough to be my grandson and looked like your typical SJW barrista, complete with long, matted hair and spaced-out expression on his face. His response was “I don’t pay attention to politics.” I told him point blank that he should because what’s at stake isn’t just this country but his future and that of his grandchildren.
I don’t think he understood what I had told him.
They’ve absolutely no ambition. They believe that the Boomers had it easy and because they didn’t ask to be born we should give them what they want and need. Could it be that they’re stoned?
They need a “Trump Infusion” as seen on FNC’s The Greg Gutfeld show. This red colored drink makes one have Trump’s voice and supposedly his ambition. Its a joke piece, of course, designed to give a boost to dullards and deadbeats.
They believe that the Boomers had it easy and because they didn’t ask to be born we should give them what they want and need.
I saw a lot of that with my students shortly after I began teaching over 30 years ago. They had it easy in high school, getting high marks for doing next to nothing, so it was my fault that they were doing poorly. (“I got straight As in high school. You must be a bad instructor.”) How was I supposed to know that each one of them was a “genius”, a “prodigy” (at least in their own minds.)
Of course, they mewled and puked and, after my first department head retired, I was constantly in trouble with the administrators because of that. And then my students became my “customers”….
You were correct!
The Uni’s Administration was wrong wrong wrong AND corrupt! Ditto for universities everywhere. This goes for many of the faculties. (Believe me, I have met and dealt with some dumb professionals. But that is another story)
This comes back to haunt everyone when a bridge or building collapses. Did they think they could avoid going over bridges or not take flights etc for the rest of their lives when they made these decisions to lower the standards? They just didn’t care, essentially.
The best people get the jobs. The rest fake it ’till they make it, or they are independently wealthy, like you know who!
I was told by an administrator that I should only concentrate on teaching enough so that the kiddies could get a “good” job. (Presumably that sort of employment would befall them because of our institution’s reputation.) Whichever employer they had would teach them what they needed to know.
Uh, no. That’s generally never been the case for me. There were certain things I was expected to know when I was interviewed, even though it was likely I could figure out what I didn’t on my own.
Diversity is a strength…

Suspects arrested in last week’s spree of eight anti-Semitic attacks are being quickly released right back into the neighborhoods they terrorized thanks to “bail reform” legislation — which doesn’t even take effect until Jan. 1.
“F-U, Jews!” Harris, 30, of Flatbush, allegedly shouted during the attack.
Coming soon to a Chinadastan near you. Any objection to having one’s wife, sister, or daughter being groomed with those gangs qualifies as racism or whatever *phobia, so one is the criminal, not the groomers.
Gee, thanks, Prinz Dummkopf!
It will be fun to watch our Chicom overlords drag them into re-education camps eventually. Pity we might be watching through the bars from a camp next door.
Trump jobs created since Jan 1 2017: 6,317,000
Canada jobs created since Jan 1 2017: 898,300
Canada jobs above modified with Jrs fuzzy math: 8,983,000
Obama jobs created in his last 3 years of office: 7,498,000
Most of those Canadian jobs were created by a strong US economy. You’re not trying to credit Trump for ALL those Canadian jobs are you? Trudeau did create some government jobs. And look at that strong Canadian dollar. That helps of course…
Dollar is the same as when Trump took over. Since we created more jobs proportionally maybe we are helping them? Or maybe thats just a stupid narrative?
Creating government jobs doesn’t count. It does not add to GDP and it simply contributes to a bloated bureaucracy. There are already too many people working for the government.

So why is it that he can’t import enough of people like that into this country?

Up to one million rapes
Coming soon to a Chinadastan near you. Any objection to having one’s wife, sister, or daughter being groomed with those gangs qualifies as racism or whatever *phobia, so one is the criminal, not the groomers.
Gee, thanks, Prinz Dummkopf!
It will be fun to watch our Chicom overlords drag them into re-education camps eventually. Pity we might be watching through the bars from a camp next door.
