Andrew Coyne’s simmering hatred for President Trump knows no bounds. In his latest missive, he has convinced himself that a recession is coming soon and that Trump is entirely to blame for it.
The evidence that there is something very wrong with the president’s mental state has been available from the start, for those who bothered to pay attention. But so long as the economy was on a roll — a roll that began under his predecessor — it was possible to pretend it did not matter. After all, were taxes not being cut, regulation not unwound, whether in spite of the president or because of him?
It’s quite amazing how the likes of Coyne have convinced themselves that the heavy handed involvement in the private sector by the regimes of Obama, Trudeau, and the EU are the correct approach for governments, no matter how many mountains of evidence dispel this ridiculous belief system.

Yes! Canada should expect a recession… When a Bank flees Canada (CHASE) forgiving Credit card debt, you must know the C$ is soon to be near worthless….Pretending the Canadian economy is solvent is foolish…Bend over
Coyne, Trump is your daddy!
I remember Obama taking credit for the oil boom in the US (which was largely due to fracking). There is no saving the mind of a leftist.
Nose, meet scissors! Coyne and his ilk would rather see a global recession that would make the Hungry Thirties look like a picnic rather than admit that Trump has taken the US on the right road to prosperity.
Antenor: EXACTLY!!
Regarding the comment “… regimes of Obama, Trudeau, and the EU are the correct approach for governments”. I don’t disagree with the intent of that statement. I want to throw a brick at my TV when Trudeau is on as I do when Trump is on. However I continue to be amazed at your support of that mindless blowhard stupid ignorant idiot twit Trump. FFS, give your collective heads a shake.
Living in Alberta, I can only wish for a Trump. Trudope and The Lieberals have ruined us.
Trump is worse than Trudeau. Canada’s economy is simply stronger than America’s.
@UnMe:
I agree but I still want to brick the both of them.
You obviously have consumed the anti-Trump Kool-Aid.
@owg:
Nothing wrong with that. More should ingest it.
Don’t be silly people, clearly Canada needs zero to megative interest rates as well. In my academic finance circles, I was STUNNED to learn many profs were not aware there were negative rates. Japan and Germany went into negative rates a decade ago! Hiw could these guys not know this?
Denmark (iirc) now actually has negative rate mortgages. What that means is (a) the present value of your mortgage is more than the future value, and (b) what will happen to prices of houses when the bank is paying YOU interest to borrow THEIR money?
The millenials just got effed badly by the baby boomer generation. No houses, no savings. But pile on the debt! I now advise my millenial mates to drain their accounts and max out their debts. Once a country is in negative rates, and you have universal voting, it is impossible to stop. Don’t be a chump. The market is punishing you for being a saver. You can’t win an extended argument with the market. Don’t save. Spend!
Don’t save money in the bank. But whatever you are borrowing, spend on things that are portable, concealable, and of practical use. First of these is knowledge and skill. Make yourself useful. The second category is tools and materials that can be used with your knowledge and skill to find and/or make and/or repair useful stuff such as food, potable water, and more tools. And build relationships, networks, communities. Things aren’t going to get much better in a few election cycles. The rot is generational, the cure must be and if that fails, the new society that arises will take generaltions to built, too.
“Enjoy the decline” and/or plant the seeds of a legacy.
Unfortunately for old folks like me our investments and savings that we are currently living on cannot be converted to anything other than our housing and daily needs. As the government destroys the purchasing power of our money we fall behind. What was expected to last twenty five years with modest interest gains will likely last 15 years, that is one hell of a contraction.
It’s not hatred that Andrew Coyne has for Donald Trump.
It’s looking-down-one’s-nose disdain.
One must remember that leftists, socialists, and other collectivists (e.g., Democrats) consider themselves SUPERIOR to Donald Trump, his followers, Republicans, conservatives, etc.
In other words, anyone who has dared to dissent against the collective is considered an inferior, especially intellectually.
This is why the leftists in Silicon Valley think it quite ok to censor conservatives on the Web because they’re superior.
This is why Andrew Coyne truly believes that a recession would be quite ok if it got rid of that inferior in the White House.
I agree. Many establishment snobs consider themselves superior to Trump yet he outwits them and wins. It drives them nuts.
The same thing happened to Harper here. Remember what a bully he was and how mean spiritedly he “changed Canada.”
For the better, iow not $80b added to debt and wreckage of broken promises like OAS and balanced budgets.
It took a full left wing court press, unions ditching the NDP, a mendactic media and a tired government being run down in the great national temper tantrum.
Harper warned us, the oblivious voters of the Ontario 905 belt didn’t listen, and here we are.
Will the DeMarxist slime show work here?
Coyne and the pathetic Scheer gay marriage remarks from over a decade ago smear are good evidence Grits will try.
What else can they do? Make carbon taxes revenue neutral. Not in your life, literally.
Coyne isn’t sounding like a genius. A recession is overdue but if one comes, it’s Trump’s fault. Let me guess Economics 101 was an 8:00 AM class. I am still lost when people claim reversing one sided trade deals damages the economy. If China having tariffs 10 times as high as the US is good, wouldn’t 20 times the tariffs be better?
“I am still lost when people claim reversing one sided trade deals damages the economy”
ITT, people who don’t understand how trade works.
Statistspeak:
Blame the previous president for present bad news, take credit for present good news, whether in power or out.
Hope for future bad news if out of power, or if probability of power waning, invent bad news. Blame on other president.
The Obama void occurred when the previous administration was to blame for bad news but he’s responsible for the good news that followed his departure from office.
Obama’s actual time as president is the collectivist event horizon.
Think of it as quantum politics where f(x)= power for them, at all costs, but no f(why) considered. Kind of like ideology.
Totalitarianism loves ideology.
Lets not forget the Great Recession in which Obama became prez. The f**king economy had no where to go but UP. My dog could have done 5 twice as much as the Black Knight because she wouldn’t have done anything. He printed money, made debt something to cuddle with and put one banker in jail.
Coyne fools no one but fools.
Ideology is for people who can’t or don’t want to accept reality and discriminate on the basis of what actually works.
Ideology is a principled framework that guides decision making ie what is right and wrong. Without it you’re basically just an animal
It’s getting hard to keep track. Trump is going to cause a recession though I don’t know there will be one. Forest fires in the Amazon same as all the other years for ground for peas and beans so lots of O2 on line. Leaders debate 5 journalists all female , fem PMS same bubble. Guns bad cop killers good. News media has a very low trust rating so I’m hoping they scare themselves out of a job.
It sure sounds like Coyne is jealous of a President making his country GREAT….look at what we have a SOCK PUPPET running Canada. Coyne should starting printing the TRUTH about our Prime Minister making a recession happen is CANADA. ONLY IN CANADA!!!! Wake up Coyne!!
Why is it all of these MORONS calling for a recession, Coyne, Marr, etc. never FEEL the EFFECTS of said recession?
Because they are already RICH. I guess it changes your perspective when you can actually FEEL the EFFECTS of an economic downturn. My question would be : Why does ANYONE listen to these entitled MORONS? Let alone REPEAT it. SMH!!!! Must be apart and parcel with being Juthtin’s Sponsored Media.
Anywheres don’t care what happens to wretched somewheres, provided they read their articles or watch their shows.
Those that think they are Rich are actually most at risk….A fool and their money are quickly separated
Don’t interrupt those that insist on going over the cliff.. Cheer them on…
BTW: Read a blip on the Canada Carbon Tax, they are now going to focus on showing RESULTS… like Building Bridges Etc.. All those signs that say “THIS WAS BUILT BY CARBON TAXES” good luck hucksters…
If Coyne wants to talk about a leaders mental state, our PM has an IQ of about 85.
But that’s just the latest narrative Coyne is spewing.
Coyne is bought and paid for. Not a journalistic bone in his body.
He may as well have the Drama Teacher’s bone in him.
I’ve always thought that might be part of the problem. He’s just jealous that he never got to sleep with a Trudeau like his cousin did.
Keep hoping, Coyne, keep hoping. Sparkle Socks will have plenty of time on his hands soon…
Coyne only serves up his righteous indignant prognostics when attacking a non globalist or non Liberal and the biggest and almost exclusive threat to authoritarian globalism at the moment is President Trump. I wonder if Coyne will tell us how much stolen taxpayer money he will be receiving for his loyalty to the Liberal Party and their idiot leader, Turdhole. Coyne is the ultimate fraud artist, a talking head of the one party State that was invented and imposed by Coyne’s biggest hero (yep, Peeair the Turdhole) Coyne writes his flaccid Liberal talking points while he pretends to be a “journalist” all the while accepting money from the same Government he supposed to hold accountable. Reading Coyne’s blatherings is an utter waste of time and energy, the man is a whore of the Liberal Party. Remember, Coyne thought that Bev Oda’s 16 dollar orange juice was the end of the country, literally, Turdhole spending 100’s of thousands of taxpayer dollars on boozy flights around the world doesn’t worry Coyne one bit, not one bit, but by all means lets take the sleazy asshole seriously.
Coyne is in the leftists media alphabet echo chamber.
Think NPC. They go from meme to meme, babbling the same lame rhetoric at each other.
At some point, they will revolve around to the Russia, Russia, Russia! meme again, after their second “mentally unstable” tour is finished. This while Biden is clearly NOT of sound mind, he is clearly in early dementia.
Goebbels Law. This is all a defined strategy going. But who is the puppet master, that is leading ALL the media outlets, with their virtual, word for word reporting, no matter the network…….
Yes.
Trudeau’s “intellect” is discussed by the Canadian Media as much as Adscam and their fondness for pedophilia.
When Jason Kenney gave an unvarnished opinion of Junior’s intellectual shortcomings, the Canadian Media cocooned him like he was the neighborhood Downs Syndrome child.
And continue to this very day.
Truth is so hard to find.
Tis nonexistent in Canada.
Like the completely market dominant NBNews Media in New Brunswick always wondering why NB is as transparent as the Petitcodiac River, which is to say, not at all. As if they don’t see the answer in the mirror every day.
Hilarious.
Could Trump be right?
Is the Media the enemy?
canucked, the media has been the enemy for decades.
Coyne, who is consistently all over the board within the centrist political and economic spectrum, is unusually consistent in his low opinion of the loose cannon populist who is ironically also all over the political and economic spectrum. The difference is that Coyne tries to make a living as a quasi intellectual poseur journalist selling his mushy middle bilge while Trump is a Bull in the White House, unapologetically doing some good and some bad without reconciliation.
The coming recession is inevitable and could happen any time within the next few years. The planet is full of bankrupt welfare states which are necessarily morphing into ZIRP and NIRP territory eventually resulting in mass abandonment of fiat currency with states then capturing private wealth where ever it can be confiscated to return to the statist norm of (likely green theocratic) tribal serfdom.
I guess, then, that Ludwig von Mises was wrong.
You can have perpetual prosperity via the artificial suppression of interest rates and the accumulation of ever more government, corporate and private debt; that an artificial extention of the cycle will not lead to a more severe than usual recession.
I think I’ll edit by bookshelves. Hate being reminded about what an idiot I’ve been.
Recall that Trump himself called it a bubble and said that it was crazy to buy stocks way back in 2016.
I assume that Coyne correctly predicted that Rump would rout a slew of candidates in the primary and then decisively beat Hillary in the Presidential election.
I’m also confident that he accurately predicted the stock market rally and record low unemployment numbers currently experienced in the U.S.
Correct?
Yes he did, but not until last week.
Indeed. compare Trump’s mythical poor mental state to justin’s ongoing display of incompetence and corruption. And it’s proven – it’s not just some pundit playing psychiatrist.
(Do you notice that journos long to be qualified for something?)
So who would count prefer? Bernie or one of the others? All of the likely dem options make McGovern look centre right by comparison.
Is trump erratic etc etc? Absolutely. But he remains the only sane option to anyone not blinded by intellectual piety.
Oh bull. Biden and Booker are perfectly sane. Trump probably has tertiary syphilis.
Best to ignore Coyne. By linking to him etc. we’re feeding the beast. If he weren’t a prominent figure in our media, he’d be of no more interest than someone’s obnoxious uncle ranting at the family reunion. It’s a vicious circle. People read his columns because he’s a prominent figure, and he’s a prominent figure because people read his columns.
I do like to sample a variety of opinions, to be exposed to different viewpoints and to gauge the Zeitgeist. But a regular reading of Mr Coyne is not required.
Perhaps Coyne should tell us who would be to blame if Canada falls into recession.
The same negative stuff flowed from Coyne’s pen against PM Harper before he and all the other media types convinced the electorate that they didn’t need Harper.
Fortunately, this won’t affect one vote in the U.S.
I disagree,”Simmering Hatred” no that is Simpering hatred from Canada’s chief Soy Boy.
Trump Derangement Syndrome is pure sunlight, the fools and bandits self expose.
Coyne has long since ceased to be relevant, a dying relic of a dying paper.
I remember last Canadian election when the impending Harper recession needed to be stopped by hero Trudeau. These scumbag fake newsmen hould be ignored and deplatformed.
“But so long as the economy was on a roll — a roll that began under his predecessor“
This is so unremittingly stupid it should disqualify Coyne from writing in a national publication. Just from memory I know that 1) the Obama recovery was the worst post-recession recovery in about 50 years, 2) he didn’t have a single year of growth above 3%, and 3) the economy was slumping toward the end of his term with just 1.6% in the final year.
Growth doubled after the tax cuts and deregulation.
When journalists are this stupid in the Internet age they should be wheeled out to the porch and watch the sunset.
“Growth doubled after the tax cuts and deregulation.”
No it didn’t: https://www.marketwatch.com/story/good-jobs-report-shows-there-is-still-no-trump-boom-2019-05-03
Just another Unifor SLUG !!!!
Why would Coyne worry about a recession?
He’s got a government job, more or less.
Coyne is one of the smartest journalists in Canada, and he’s a moron.
Coyne is angling for a full time gig with the CBC for the gold-plated pension provided by tax payers.
Thats what Michael Coren is all about. Bread buttered and all that.
Coy s is the reason I cancelled my subscription to the National Post. Such a privileged arrogant man. I wish he’d go away.
Andrew Coyne makes David Frum look like the master of failure. What a pair of clown liberal losers.
” The evidence that there is something very wrong with the president’s mental state has been available from the start, for those who bothered to pay attention. “
C’est vrai.
President Trump’s mental state drives the ruling caste nuts.
“It’s quite amazing how the likes of Coyne have convinced themselves that the heavy handed involvement in the private sector by the regimes of Obama, Trudeau, and the EU are the correct approach for governments, no matter how many mountains of evidence dispel this ridiculous belief system.”
It’s quite amazing that you forgot that Turmp is at least as heavy handed vis a vis import taxes. Doesn’t matter what Coyne is hoping for; he’s right and you’re too stupid to actually understand his argument.
Your data please, that “Trump is at least as heavy handed vis a vis import taxes?”
Otherwise you’re the one hoping for something, namely knowledge.
Apples to oranges (non-tariff barriers anyone?) are not data. Just relevant arguments please.
Or are you too stupid to understand the argument, let alone refute it?
People who project should at least be aware movie they’re watching.
Hint: you’re watching fiction while real life plays on.
ITT, whiners who can’t lay a finger on Coyne.
Peeair Turdos biggest fan and CBC skid mark, Andrew the Coyne writes for a Government funded newspaper owned by “Postmedia”, the same postmedia organization that just received 5 million taxpayer dollars from Justine the Turdhole… Andy the chinless Turdhole fan is simply showing his gratitude to Peeairs son for all that free “journalist” money… you’re welcome Andy, although the citizens of Turdholeland had no choice in the matter… the dickless wonder could’nt be any more irrelevant. 600 mil buys a lot of “journalistic” loyalty to the Liberal Party.
