O, Sweet Saint Of San Andreas

Hear my prayer.

The majority of the nation’s homeless people now live in California. There are myriad causes at work, no doubt. But there was no “defecation crisis”—a term usually associated with rural India—in the 1930s, even with unemployment at 25%, vagabonds roaming the country, and shantytowns and “Hoovervilles” springing up everywhere. Today’s homeless and the hobos of the Great Depression are different in many ways. The triple scourges of drug abuse, mental illness and family breakdown have produced anomie and derangements far deeper than those seen in the 1930s, when the widely shared nature of the economic and psychological distress provided its own grim comfort.

In California at least, one is struck by the contrast between the fastidious attention paid to the social duty of scooping up and disposing of dog feces, and the rather more paralyzed and guilty reaction to the plague of human feces. The former is treated as a moral imperative among the enlightened—and the thin plastic bags used as the means to this moral end have so far escaped the fate of plastic straws, well on their way to being outlawed as an environmental outrage. Even social-justice warriors don’t consider it their personal duty, however, to tidy up after their fellow human beings on the streets.

Confronted on the sidewalk with a nasty fait accompli, most people are indignant. But the questions they then ask often diverge. Those of a more traditional disposition might wonder, “What is wrong with these people?” Those of a more progressive mind-set might exclaim, “Why hasn’t the government designed a program to solve this?”

      1. Thanks, but can’t take credit.
Read this comment on another thread in this heading several weeks ago.
Like it and will continue to use it.

    1. Grumps..

      AWESOME comment…
Let them rot/stew in their own SHIT…(figuratively of course..LOL).

Its the LEFT Coast Disease: From San Diego – LA – SanFran – Portland – Seattle to Vancouver BC incl. the Island. It would not bother me in the slightest to see a Natural “Cleansing”…the Overdue BIG one.

Kenji…hopefully you are not in the danger zone when that happens..??

    1. E. Coli, and its thousand variants is pretty harmless, in and of itselves, and its on everything.

What it is , it is a easy microscope marker of , maybe, other fecal bacteria, and viruses that may or may not be present.

But in San Fran and others the E. Coli is a marker for….Democrats.
All public spaces run by Democrats suck. Pubic housing, Detroit and 500 other cities, Pubic skools, Streets, entire states.
And they spend trillions on Democrat government hacks, slumlording these cities into shite holes. Litterally.
( Then they take their one, two, three pensions, and disability injury and move to low tax, well run conservative states to then support leftists and metastasize all over again. Maybe cancer causing pap virus is a better analogy. )

  1. Yeah, I noticed my lefty-infested big-city neighbourhood is also infested with dogs and every time they take a dump a plastic bag is used, time to talk about that I’d say…

    1. I don’t have a dog but when I had to walk my neighbour’s she had a container attached to the leach that dispensed narrow biodegradable plastic bags for that purpose. I saw people who still used regular grocery store plastic bags though. No wonder “Pet Business” is a multi billion dollar racket with all the accoutrements for every little thing.

As an aside it’s the people who own the pets that need obedience school. Some are too lazy and don’t walk their dogs and let them bark incessantly at everyone that walks by. I ha-8 barkers!

      1. The house I inherited is in a neighbourhood that has a lot of mentally-deficient dogs. The one for one of my next-door neighbours keeps running to the fence and barking every time I’m in the back yard, no matter what the reason is.

When one of the other dogs starts barking, every other one seems to want to join in. There are times when there are at least half a dozen critters making noise.

At least the last dachshund in the family, whenever he stays with me, is not only harmless but wants to make friends when he barks. If he’s not doing for that reason, it’s because he’s scolding me for not tossing his toy soon enough after he brings it to me while we play “go und get it”. (He’ll come up and swat my hand with his snout if I don’t hurry up for him.)

  2. “Why hasn’t the government designed a program to solve this?”.

Because the government designed a program which created this.

    1. Just hire more government workers for the new Bureau: State Health Incident Team.
40 hours a week. Full benefits. Shift premiums and a gold-plated pension. Qualifications: Responsible Dog owner.

      1. 40 hours a week? The union won’t tolerate it.

Probably more like 32-35 hours, with the off for coffee, lunch, etc.

  3. Not so fast about the dog poop. My HOA provides bags and a sanitary disposal container and there are a bunch of my neighbors who can’t be bothered. When I offered one a bag after Spot dumped a load he said “Dude, it’s organic”. What he meant was “Do you know who I am? You expect ME to pick up dog poop?”

    1. uhuh.
and cigarette smoke arrogantly blown right in the face of bystanders is ‘organic’ as well eh?
‘organic’ as Kate says ‘grown in pig shyte’ heh heh !!!
I hope some day my once extremely severe ocd is so far in the past I can without concern, scoop up said ‘organic’ material
and smear it right in the face of ‘mr organic’.
p.s., he had that retort rehearsed.

  4. Pity. I’ve been to Kalifornia many times and it is one of the most beautiful places in the world. Stunning oceanside, great hiking in the hills, fertile farmland in the Central Valley, amazing forests in the north near the Oregon border.

It just needs all the current inhabitants removed.

  5. Well, if given a chance, many would like to add to the problem. Perhaps while hovering a few hundred feet above the governor’s residence or his motorcade.

  6. Yesterday, Bernie Sanders was saying that we should let a large percentage of incarcerated criminals go because our prison system is the most expensive in the world. The amusing thing is that 1/5 of the total cost of prisons across the country is attributed to California (a fact he left out). 2/3 of the total cost is a result of salaries and benefits for the employees within the prisons.

So, Bernie Sanders thinks the way to solve the prison costs is to ignore the law and continue to feed the big Union Machine. I’d say that’s California in a nutshell.

  7. I know how to at least seriously reduce the street people feces problem in these cities…. stop giving them food.

The homeless/drug/crazy population will only continue to grow in major cities as long as the left pushes their progressive policies. The left only knows one single philosophy when it comes to “handling” this urban crisis and that can be summarized as follows… “Build it and they will come.” Liberals are too busy virtue signalling and pandering to woke idiots to care if their enabling actions/inactions are actually making things even worse.

ALL the REAL solutions to this problem are absolutely POLITICALLY INCORRECT, so anyone seriously trying to make a difference will be dismissed as a deplorable, hateful and, racist Nazi. You know… like they do now.

  8. Cult. Marxists idolize, pastoral primitive, tribal, pre-industrial societies, due to their organic and sustainable renewable practices; it is a variant of utopianism.

Dragging everyone on earth to this, Cult Marxists label a global utopia. Normal people label it = dystopia.

Cult. Marxists label their goal “progressive”. Normal people label it = s.. for brains.

California, vote for normal people = Gold Rush 2.0

    1. Well said. As well as idolizing primitive cultures, lefties idolize themselves. Their policies are based on a flawed view of human nature. They boldly proclaim that people are basically good (which is partially true) and ignore the historical fact that people can also be incredibly evil and flawed, which they should be able to see, but refuse to. So they blindly believe that illegal immigrants will all assimilate and become productive, that homeless drug users bear no responsibility for their current situation or the primary responsibility for changing, that criminals are merely victims of circumstances, and that in a socialist utopia, everyone will pull their weight and work hard for the common good.
They forget that the grinding poverty of the 30’s produced the Greatest Generation.
Where do they get their skewed, unrealistic view of human nature?
By looking in the mirror at their own virtuous selves. They believe they are inherently good, (mistakenly and pridefully) and are forced to conclude that human nature must be inherently good. So when they preach that “I believe people are good, and given the right circumstances will do the right thing” they are saying that they (arrogantly) believe that about themselves, and are willing to close their eyes to all of human history in order to avoid admitting that all people, including themselves, have incredible potential for good AND evil.
Interesting that the “people are basically good” meme does not seem to extend to Trump or his supporters….

      1. This creates what I call leftist empathetic tyranny. They want empathy and they want to shove down your throat

      2. well intended comments, but lefties, “liberals”, and or Progressives are not all built alike. Their common denominator is a form of mental illness that predisposes them to illogical thinking and delusion.

“I believe people are good, and given the right circumstances will do the right thing” – The Progressive left if anything are hypocrites and liars. Point & case, disarming the public and simultaneously demanding police enforcement of law abiding citizens, while screaming police brutality of criminals and early release at every turn.

“Liberals” swing from greedy money grabbing elitist totalitarians, to eco-communist self loathing totalitarians. In all ways they want what you have, and you under their boot.

  9. I rarely leave the (well policed) confines of my lilywhite upper middle class neighborhood. Therefore, I read about these poo stories in the Press like the rest of you. Why is nothing done? Because the people who could affect change have retreated into their posh neighborhoods like me. We can’t be bothered by the refuse of the State’s leftist policies … so long as they remain deposited on big city streets … and not on our suburban sidewalks.

Why are my real estate values spiking off the charts? Because I live in a sanctuary city. NO! Not one of THOSE Mexican, Guatemalan, Homeless Sanctuary Cities! But a white upper middle class sanctuary city. Sanctuary from the Sanctuaries.

Yeah, the State of CA is gonna divide … but not by N,S,E,W … but by poop free zones

  10. Hundreds of millions of dollars are taken in taxes and given to the homeless industry. And that’s just in Toronto, every city does the same thing, that kind of spending gets leftists re-elected every time.

The ‘social contract’ requires that people who suffer from mental illness live on the streets, that’s all.

    1. Well Phil, they give those poor bassturds sleeping bags in terana that do NOT have ‘ensuits’, so they just schitt in the sleeping bag, and then go get another one.

  11. This likely isn’t a depression — at least, not yet. But unemployment can be argued to be much higher than the official statistics — possibly as high as in the 1930s. More and more people are getting pushed down into the morass of unemployment, homelessness, and drugs. It’s a terrible tragedy, the hollowing out of society.

ShadowStats publishes a more realistic unemployment rate: http://www.shadowstats.com/alternate_data/unemployment-charts

  12. furthermore, lets extrapolate a tad. let’s add oh, 6 or 7 years to the calendar.
anything current to indicate a fix or is it continuing downhill?
ah, downhill. and what typical expected scenario do we see in 6 or 7 years?
VASTLY WORSE. thats what, waaaaaaaay worse.
confirmation of the law of entropy what ho, harumph harumph.

no doubt all Trump’s fault still. /sarc off
