I went on opening day. The movie was thoroughly enjoyable. However, be sure to stay until the credits roll, because the main character does a funny and phoney commercial ad, in character. It is not part of the movie. I felt bad for the people who rushed out early, because they missed it.
In the theatre I was at people applauded and someone shouted out “Bravo Tarrantino.” That was the first time I’d ever heard that after a movie.
When I wrote about this last night in Readers Tips, I forgot to mention that I thought that perhaps Tarrantino was getting better with age because I’d only seen his later stuff, while the person to whom I was replying to, had seen his earlier films and didn’t like Tarantino’s films.
Pfft you should ignore whoever told you that about T’s early films. Reservoir Dogs is absolutely excellent. So was all of Grindhouse. Django Unchained was one of his weaker more recent works unfortunately. He had been on a downtrend until possibly now.

His portion of Grindhouse – Deathproof – is crap. Inglorious Basterds is one of the worst movies I ever saw and I never saw another of his films because of it.

Totally agree, Buddy, I thought Inglorious Bastards was just stupid and ridiculous. Tarantino and his Hollywood people decry the right wing as gun nuts but love to portray the most sickening violence. I think his movies should follow Hot Shots Part Deux with a ticker of “More body count than Commando” etc.
I’ve often changed my minds about movies that I didn’t like or felt indifferent about the first time.
When I first saw John Ford’s The Searchers (with John Wayne, Jeffrey Hunter, Vera Miles, and Natalie Wood), I was a schoolboy and I thought it was all right. It wasn’t until I was well into adulthood many years later that I began to appreciate it for what it was: a masterpiece. It’s easily Ford’s best movie and Wayne should have received an Oscar for his performance in it.
Then there are some movies that, no matter how hard I tried through multiple viewings, I simply didn’t like. One example of that is The Deer Hunter. Michael Cimino is, quite frankly, a lousy director. If you don’t believe me, watch the colossal mess Heaven’s Gate or the stinker Year of the Dragon, both of which are Cimino clunkers.
Unfortunately, a lot of movie directors nowadays fancy themselves as artistic geniuses. When I see the movies they’re responsible for, I often wonder if they ever paid attention to what their predecessors, such as George Stevens, Raoul Walsh, or Michael Curtiz, did. Those were craftsmen and the movies they directed often showed it.
These directors made some of the best western /action adventure movies. I appreciate the ones you have named because a lot of them wrote and produced their own movies. Most importantly, these are the types of movies that sold tickets. Most of the great ones come from the Big Studio era. This System had its pros and cons, too numerous to mention, including big budgets and less regulations imposed on them, like the ones from the animal rights organizations.
I agree with you about Michael Cimino. No one liked his movies. I saw half of Heaven’s Gate and then cut my losses. I understand box office sales bombed as well. Didn’t mind the Deer Hunter because the actors did an admirable job.
As for my favourite movie, this is a difficult one because I rarely see any flick twice, especially if they are sad ones, like Dr Zhivago or Sophie’s Choice. I liked the book of the latter though. It was better than the movie and ditto with The Godfather.

I am a confessing Christian. Born Again if you will. A simple man who does his level best to read and interpret and … personalize … the Word of God. The Bible is Literature, Art, and Eternal Truth. Most all Western Lit. originates from the Bible. Why? Because the Bible’s Literature, Art, and Eternal Truth speak to the soul of mankind (person-kind? uh, NO). God communicates with us in the manner by which he designed us to understand. Through parables and stories that touch our hearts and connect the dots of life.
I appreciate Art. Art that frees the soul to interpret and invites a dig for understanding. I am a massive Tarantino Fan. His films are pure Art (which is only enhanced by a bloodbath or two … the human condition-remember?). Some of his films are better than others. Pulp Fiction is one of the best 5 films ever made IMHO.
And then I saw a 4pm matinee of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood yesterday … in a nearly empty Art Deco Orinda Crossroads Theatre. I was utterly transfixed, as I imagined my own real life ‘stunt double’ looks exactly like a shirtless, glisteningly sweaty, 6-pack, Brad Pitt on the roof doin guy-stuff … like fix a downed TV antenna (remember those?). The film is so chock full of metaphors that my mind was spinning making joyful connections and interpreting references. The film is a bloody masterpiece at Tarantino’s pace. He’s off the Hollywood click track. He eschews explosions and chase scenes for mixology. As in mixing drinks, blending drinks, and drinking drinks … to glorious and catastrophic excess. He’s telling his story at the pace of 1969 hippie’s daytimer. It’s timeless. The film plays like the backbeat and the beautiful pause in a great Jazz improv.
I believe we are watching more than a film about the Hollywood romanticized by Tarantino. I believe the film is Tarantino’s romanticized view of his own life. Let’s be honest … Tarantino is a particularly ugly man. Frighteningly large, with a freakishly enormous head and face that would stop a clock. So he lost himself in film and TV. Lost his own anti-hero REAL life in the beautiful men and women of the silver screen. He had to invent a ‘stunt double’ who was too beautiful to be a stunt double, but could kick Bruce Lee’s bullshitty martial arts soundtrack ass. His ‘stunt double’ alter-ego is an effortless MAN who does man-things with ease … and effusive confidence. Comfortable in his own skin. Quentin imagines himself looking and acting like Brad Pitt. (don’t we all?) We got a glimpse into Tarantino’s self-doubt and his redemption. His inner artistry perfected, which brings him to tears of relief to discover a moment of competency. Just … like … us … all.
One of the most amazing things in this film? No sex. Despite a Beautiful waiflike Hollywood starlet, and naturally cute hippie chicks There wasn’t a single scene with naked people, doing naked people things. Not at the Playboy Mansion. Not in Brad Pitt’s drivers seat … nowhere. Not a single naked body (well, Brad Pitt got half naked) in the entire film. But there were plenty of beautiful, shapely young women on full display. Just how an adolescent Tarantino would have seen them. How’s THAT for shattering the Hollywood ‘formula’. How’s that for describing Tarantino’s adolescent sex life? D’ya really think a fugly awkward Tarantino was getting in on the Free Love era? Sorry, gigantic dweebs (like most of us see ourselves as) weren’t nailing every flower child at the bus stop. Not even Quentin’s alter-ego ‘stunt double’ got to ‘do’ an underaged hippie chick. Sad face.
Tarantino’s film is a bloody masterpiece that I expect fully HALF of the population (+ 3M popular voters) won’t understand or appreciate. You forgot, there was a pretty gluteus maximus screen shot of the hippie girl that was zeroed in on where the camera lingered – something for the men… and of course Brad Pitt for the ladies.

As for the shot lingering on a well-formed female buttocks … perhaps that was emblematic of Tarantino’s early life of “looking but not touching” (like so many of us). But I can also interpret it as the TRUTH which informs us that a little mystery is still sexy as hell. In today’s Hollyweird and online porn industry era of maximum nastiness … a little old fashioned views of sexuality still arouse us more. Frankly, I’ve become bored with cinematic sex. Too much nudity, too many close ups on the nasty bits. Yes … I sound just like my grandparents … ha! If only? Tarantino’s view of 1969 sexuality is akin to Hitchcock’s view of horror … a little suggestion is all that is needed to make your point. Ha! The ending scene. OMG … where to begin? First off, I should confess I somehow expected it … surely Tarantino wasn’t going to film another Bugliosi documentary on the Manson slaughter? … and I confess my emotional reaction was laughter! The entire scene was cartoonish (as cartoonish as kicking Bruce Lee’s ass). Cartoonish things we imagine our ‘stunt double’ alter-egos are capable of. THAT (IMHO) is what Tarantino was communicating. Not that this alternate reality is REAL (sadly, such things never happen – enough), but that it exists only in the minds of innocents … of TV viewers used to seeing the good guys winning. The cultural transition filmed in Hollywood (as a reaction to the VietNam war IMHO) where the bad guys started winning was a shocking loss of innocence and hope for our culture. Tarantino appropriately mourns that loss. By rewinding and reshooting history. Ha! If only?

This was the best parody of Hollywood that I’ve ever seen, by far!
You mentioned wardrobe. This movie was totally accurate for the era. Brad Pitt looked totally Californian and ‘au courant’ for the summer of ’69. However, here in Canada no one wore Hawaiian shirts then unless they just got back from a trip there and they were older folks.
As for the women, their wardrobes were also quite accurate for the era. I recognized, a now vintage, brown cloth shoulder bag with braided strap. I had one just like it! As for the short shorts, I was not into them nor the white go -go boots, as they called them. Too stylish, and mother wouldn’t have approved. The fact that one forgot about wardrobe after awhile into the movie, is a credit to the style of the movie as it would’ve been too distracting.

I would have to make an exception and watch the movie a second time. I think I might have missed some cameo roles. Perhaps you might know: Did Tarantino have a cameo shot? I missed it. And secondly was Al Pacino’s role supposed to be based on Swifty Lazar? The eyeglasses were quite something!
I saw an interview with Tarantino and he said he got permission from the City to shut down Hollywood Blvd for a few afternoons on alternate sides of the Blvd to film this movie. This is very cool! I like that when they film on location. It adds to the authenticity of a picture.
Lastly, I loved the dog in this movie! He was the STAR, Kenji.

Playing over Sharon Tate’s final Porsche drive … the sad, voyeristically-detached aerial point of view … watching a happy, carefree Sharon Tate pick up a Manson family hitchhiker and becoming friends by the end of the ride. Sad. I was almost crying during that scene … such an innocent beautiful actress … lacking the poisonous self-awareness of the selfie era, the Fackebook and Twitterati era. Pure joy and innocence in that scene. I wept for the loss of ALL OUR collective innocence … youth … and beauty. I wept for Sharon. Brilliant filmmaking … brilliant!
Oh! And my musical nostalgia was so sufficiently fed by Tarantino’s soundtrack that I just bought the Deep Purple lp featuring Hush and Vanilla Fudge’s You keep me hanging on … original state first issue lp’s in NM(-) condition. And I might have to get the Mammas and Pappas lp with Young Girls are coming to the canyon Tarantino unwittingly fed my Psychadelic music nostalgia.

Ugh … are we gonna disagree on a detail about the film? Sorry, I’m not a Pitbull fan … no matter how gentle and well trained they are … because a BEAST lies within (and then some!). I had read this dog described as a “Rottweiler” … which I find to be a stretch. I grew up with neighbors who had two PURE BRED Rottweilers … and that was NO Rottweiler.
Hence the dog was something of a “continuity” glitch, as I cannot remember even HEARING the word PitBull in 1969. Nope. Not until drug dealers and gangstahs set up shop in our culture did I ever see or hear of a “PitBull” … long after 1969.
I would have preferred a nice Doberman … or German Shepherd in the LEAD role.
Wardrobe … yes, my wife DID have the go-go boots as an 11 yo girl growing up in Van Nuys. Yep. She grew up in Van Nuys, and went to that drive-in theatre. And her mother dressed like a hippie actress wannabe in giant bellbottom pants in paisley prints with polka dot peasant shirts in the late 60’s early 70’s … and dressed her prepubescent daughter the same … I’ve seen the photos. The real estate on Hollywood Blvd features in as a great additional feature. Saw an interview on Sunday that indicated that this type of original filming on an existing site is not done much anymore. More CGI today than ever.
The cars were authentic to the era. Gotta mention those, though I can’t remember what I saw. You might.
Last but not least, Leo di Caprio did a fine job. Brad Pit said in the interview I saw, that Leo gets the recognition for the best “angry” scene of all time in the movies. I agree. I told myself that I would not giggle too soon when watching the movie for fear of missing something. People were chuckling way before me. Want to know when I lost it? It was when Leo crinkled his face to start crying! He then cried and cried and cried, like the baby he was.
His scene with the smart little actress was very cute. His character realized that he could act!
Kudos to Leo and Pitt. They carried the show. I’m very happy that Quentin Tarantino changed history! At least for two hours and forty five minutes anyway. Kudos to Tarantino! He made us all a little less heartbroken anyway.

There has always been a fence marking or something the Mexican border. Sometimes and someplaces it was only a one strand of barb wire. President Trump is building a real barrier along about 1/4 of the border where most of the people smuggling occurs.

The rumor is that the arrested Marines were smuggling in snipers who were intended to attack the President:
Sixteen US Marines were arrested Thursday for alleged involvement in various illegal activities ranging from human smuggling to drug-related offenses, according to a statement from the Marine Corps.

I went on opening day. The movie was thoroughly enjoyable. However, be sure to stay until the credits roll, because the main character does a funny and phoney commercial ad, in character. It is not part of the movie. I felt bad for the people who rushed out early, because they missed it.
In the theatre I was at people applauded and someone shouted out “Bravo Tarrantino.” That was the first time I’d ever heard that after a movie.
When I wrote about this last night in Readers Tips, I forgot to mention that I thought that perhaps Tarrantino was getting better with age because I’d only seen his later stuff, while the person to whom I was replying to, had seen his earlier films and didn’t like Tarantino’s films.

His portion of Grindhouse – Deathproof – is crap. Inglorious Basterds is one of the worst movies I ever saw and I never saw another of his films because of it.
What I got from this is that you had had excellent taste in films and now have terrible taste in films.
Totally agree, Buddy, I thought Inglorious Bastards was just stupid and ridiculous. Tarantino and his Hollywood people decry the right wing as gun nuts but love to portray the most sickening violence. I think his movies should follow Hot Shots Part Deux with a ticker of “More body count than Commando” etc.
I’ve often changed my minds about movies that I didn’t like or felt indifferent about the first time.
When I first saw John Ford’s The Searchers (with John Wayne, Jeffrey Hunter, Vera Miles, and Natalie Wood), I was a schoolboy and I thought it was all right. It wasn’t until I was well into adulthood many years later that I began to appreciate it for what it was: a masterpiece. It’s easily Ford’s best movie and Wayne should have received an Oscar for his performance in it.
Then there are some movies that, no matter how hard I tried through multiple viewings, I simply didn’t like. One example of that is The Deer Hunter. Michael Cimino is, quite frankly, a lousy director. If you don’t believe me, watch the colossal mess Heaven’s Gate or the stinker Year of the Dragon, both of which are Cimino clunkers.
Unfortunately, a lot of movie directors nowadays fancy themselves as artistic geniuses. When I see the movies they’re responsible for, I often wonder if they ever paid attention to what their predecessors, such as George Stevens, Raoul Walsh, or Michael Curtiz, did. Those were craftsmen and the movies they directed often showed it.
These directors made some of the best western /action adventure movies. I appreciate the ones you have named because a lot of them wrote and produced their own movies. Most importantly, these are the types of movies that sold tickets. Most of the great ones come from the Big Studio era. This System had its pros and cons, too numerous to mention, including big budgets and less regulations imposed on them, like the ones from the animal rights organizations.
I agree with you about Michael Cimino. No one liked his movies. I saw half of Heaven’s Gate and then cut my losses. I understand box office sales bombed as well. Didn’t mind the Deer Hunter because the actors did an admirable job.
As for my favourite movie, this is a difficult one because I rarely see any flick twice, especially if they are sad ones, like Dr Zhivago or Sophie’s Choice. I liked the book of the latter though. It was better than the movie and ditto with The Godfather.

I am a confessing Christian. Born Again if you will. A simple man who does his level best to read and interpret and … personalize … the Word of God. The Bible is Literature, Art, and Eternal Truth. Most all Western Lit. originates from the Bible. Why? Because the Bible’s Literature, Art, and Eternal Truth speak to the soul of mankind (person-kind? uh, NO). God communicates with us in the manner by which he designed us to understand. Through parables and stories that touch our hearts and connect the dots of life.
I appreciate Art. Art that frees the soul to interpret and invites a dig for understanding. I am a massive Tarantino Fan. His films are pure Art (which is only enhanced by a bloodbath or two … the human condition-remember?). Some of his films are better than others. Pulp Fiction is one of the best 5 films ever made IMHO.
And then I saw a 4pm matinee of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood yesterday … in a nearly empty Art Deco Orinda Crossroads Theatre. I was utterly transfixed, as I imagined my own real life ‘stunt double’ looks exactly like a shirtless, glisteningly sweaty, 6-pack, Brad Pitt on the roof doin guy-stuff … like fix a downed TV antenna (remember those?). The film is so chock full of metaphors that my mind was spinning making joyful connections and interpreting references. The film is a bloody masterpiece at Tarantino’s pace. He’s off the Hollywood click track. He eschews explosions and chase scenes for mixology. As in mixing drinks, blending drinks, and drinking drinks … to glorious and catastrophic excess. He’s telling his story at the pace of 1969 hippie’s daytimer. It’s timeless. The film plays like the backbeat and the beautiful pause in a great Jazz improv.
I believe we are watching more than a film about the Hollywood romanticized by Tarantino. I believe the film is Tarantino’s romanticized view of his own life. Let’s be honest … Tarantino is a particularly ugly man. Frighteningly large, with a freakishly enormous head and face that would stop a clock. So he lost himself in film and TV. Lost his own anti-hero REAL life in the beautiful men and women of the silver screen. He had to invent a ‘stunt double’ who was too beautiful to be a stunt double, but could kick Bruce Lee’s bullshitty martial arts soundtrack ass. His ‘stunt double’ alter-ego is an effortless MAN who does man-things with ease … and effusive confidence. Comfortable in his own skin. Quentin imagines himself looking and acting like Brad Pitt. (don’t we all?) We got a glimpse into Tarantino’s self-doubt and his redemption. His inner artistry perfected, which brings him to tears of relief to discover a moment of competency. Just … like … us … all.
One of the most amazing things in this film? No sex. Despite a Beautiful waiflike Hollywood starlet, and naturally cute hippie chicks There wasn’t a single scene with naked people, doing naked people things. Not at the Playboy Mansion. Not in Brad Pitt’s drivers seat … nowhere. Not a single naked body (well, Brad Pitt got half naked) in the entire film. But there were plenty of beautiful, shapely young women on full display. Just how an adolescent Tarantino would have seen them. How’s THAT for shattering the Hollywood ‘formula’. How’s that for describing Tarantino’s adolescent sex life? D’ya really think a fugly awkward Tarantino was getting in on the Free Love era? Sorry, gigantic dweebs (like most of us see ourselves as) weren’t nailing every flower child at the bus stop. Not even Quentin’s alter-ego ‘stunt double’ got to ‘do’ an underaged hippie chick. Sad face.
Tarantino’s film is a bloody masterpiece that I expect fully HALF of the population (+ 3M popular voters) won’t understand or appreciate. You forgot, there was a pretty gluteus maximus screen shot of the hippie girl that was zeroed in on where the camera lingered – something for the men… and of course Brad Pitt for the ladies.

As for the shot lingering on a well-formed female buttocks … perhaps that was emblematic of Tarantino’s early life of “looking but not touching” (like so many of us). But I can also interpret it as the TRUTH which informs us that a little mystery is still sexy as hell. In today’s Hollyweird and online porn industry era of maximum nastiness … a little old fashioned views of sexuality still arouse us more. Frankly, I’ve become bored with cinematic sex. Too much nudity, too many close ups on the nasty bits. Yes … I sound just like my grandparents … ha! If only? Tarantino’s view of 1969 sexuality is akin to Hitchcock’s view of horror … a little suggestion is all that is needed to make your point. Ha! The ending scene. OMG … where to begin? First off, I should confess I somehow expected it … surely Tarantino wasn’t going to film another Bugliosi documentary on the Manson slaughter? … and I confess my emotional reaction was laughter! The entire scene was cartoonish (as cartoonish as kicking Bruce Lee’s ass). Cartoonish things we imagine our ‘stunt double’ alter-egos are capable of. THAT (IMHO) is what Tarantino was communicating. Not that this alternate reality is REAL (sadly, such things never happen – enough), but that it exists only in the minds of innocents … of TV viewers used to seeing the good guys winning. The cultural transition filmed in Hollywood (as a reaction to the VietNam war IMHO) where the bad guys started winning was a shocking loss of innocence and hope for our culture. Tarantino appropriately mourns that loss. By rewinding and reshooting history. Ha! If only?
I would love to hear more of the details you took away from the film. I love seeing Art through the eyes of others, as my own opinions are formed by my unique personality and life experiences. This was the best parody of Hollywood that I’ve ever seen, by far!
You mentioned wardrobe. This movie was totally accurate for the era. Brad Pitt looked totally Californian and ‘au courant’ for the summer of ’69. However, here in Canada no one wore Hawaiian shirts then unless they just got back from a trip there and they were older folks.
As for the women, their wardrobes were also quite accurate for the era. I recognized, a now vintage, brown cloth shoulder bag with braided strap. I had one just like it! As for the short shorts, I was not into them nor the white go -go boots, as they called them. Too stylish, and mother wouldn’t have approved. The fact that one forgot about wardrobe after awhile into the movie, is a credit to the style of the movie as it would’ve been too distracting.

I would have to make an exception and watch the movie a second time. I think I might have missed some cameo roles. Perhaps you might know: Did Tarantino have a cameo shot? I missed it. And secondly was Al Pacino’s role supposed to be based on Swifty Lazar? The eyeglasses were quite something!
I saw an interview with Tarantino and he said he got permission from the City to shut down Hollywood Blvd for a few afternoons on alternate sides of the Blvd to film this movie. This is very cool! I like that when they film on location. It adds to the authenticity of a picture.
Lastly, I loved the dog in this movie! He was the STAR, Kenji.

Ugh … are we gonna disagree on a detail about the film? Sorry, I’m not a Pitbull fan … no matter how gentle and well trained they are … because a BEAST lies within (and then some!). I had read this dog described as a “Rottweiler” … which I find to be a stretch. I grew up with neighbors who had two PURE BRED Rottweilers … and that was NO Rottweiler.
Hence the dog was something of a “continuity” glitch, as I cannot remember even HEARING the word PitBull in 1969. Nope. Not until drug dealers and gangstahs set up shop in our culture did I ever see or hear of a “PitBull” … long after 1969.

Last but not least, Leo di Caprio did a fine job. Brad Pit said in the interview I saw, that Leo gets the recognition for the best “angry” scene of all time in the movies. I agree. I told myself that I would not giggle too soon when watching the movie for fear of missing something. People were chuckling way before me. Want to know when I lost it? It was when Leo crinkled his face to start crying! He then cried and cried and cried, like the baby he was.
His scene with the smart little actress was very cute. His character realized that he could act!
Kudos to Leo and Pitt. They carried the show. I’m very happy that Quentin Tarantino changed history! At least for two hours and forty five minutes anyway. Kudos to Tarantino! He made us all a little less heartbroken anyway.
