It’s with considerable sadness that I must pass along the news that one of SDA’s own passed away on the morning of July 22nd of a heart attack.
Ken (Kulak) was a supporter, a frequent and thoughtful commentor, and a friend.
We shall miss him, and we send our deepest condolences to Ken’s family in Waldheim, SK.

I have said a few prayers and have cheered a drink toward Ken in heaven.
Enjoy your rest Ken there is no place like heaven
God’s will be done Ken for your family here on earth and all those already with you in heaven.
OMG! I corresponded with Ken personally over the years. What a tremendous loss to his family and to all of us at SDA. My heart pours out to Ken’s family.
Very sorry to hear this sad news.
Wishing his family strength in this difficult time.
His insightful commentary and constructive positive outlook will most certainly be missed.
I am so sorry to hear this sad, sad news. It was always a pleasure to read and enjoy Ken’s comments throughout the years. Deep felt condolences to all of Ken’s family. You will be missed Ken.
This is a very sad news.
From what I’ve gathered in the time on SDA, Ken was a good man.
I could say he was my ally.
I will look him up when my candle burns out.
Always very considered comments by Ken. I am truly saddened to hear of his passing. Condolences to his family.
I’m thinking that you probably knew him personally, Kate, due to his locale, so condolences to you as well. (I played provincial hockey in both Waldheim and Delisle about 50+ years ago. I know the region and the people. They are special.)
A considerable loss for our electronic community as well.
RIP Ken. Sad news.
It’s interesting how people have a connection with others without ever having met them. I enjoyed Ken’s comments which had that Sask wit and common sense mingled together.
“These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off were assured of them, embraced them and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.” Hebrews 11:13
When we see the condition and the direction the world is headed, we can be ever so thankful that God has something far greater in store for those who love Him.
He’s one of the few commenters who readily comes to mind when I think of “the crew” at SDA for over a decade I’ve been touching down here.
He will be missed.
What a sad news.
R. I. P. Ken. I always enjoyed talking to you and reading your thoughts. You will be missed.
Ken fled the Leninist Plague in Russia. Canada gave him freedom and opportunity. Ken repaid Canada by voting for the LPC (Leninist Plague in Canada).
It is people like Ken who are responsible for the immense damage the LPC has done to Canada.
(I wonder if he was selling grain to the Soviets in 1980, after the glorious Red Army had liberated Afghanistan and was poised to liberate Poland.)
Stay classy Rizwan.
Never forgive. Never forget.
Know your enemy i.e. LPC — and those who voted for them.
NOT at all the time for cheap juvenile political posturing Rizwan….
I voted LPC, NDP, and PC.
You must be young and perfect.
In Ken’s honour…I will tell you to go pound sand.
*Kate…my apologies….some people need to be punched. I would do it for Ken.
Sad indeed..
RIP Ken..
Carpe diem. Thanks Ken.
Sad news indeed. I never had the pleasure of meeting Ken, but I always appreciated his wit and wisdom. R.I.P.
Truly, a loss. He will be missed for all the reasons pointed out. Sincere condolences to his family and friends.
Every five or ten minutes I’ve been reloading SDA for the Mueller story when this RIP headline comes up and my heart sunk. I didn’t know Ken except from here and yet my reaction was like a buddy passed.
Condolences to Ken’s family and those close to him. He’ll be missed by many.
Ken was one of the best around here.
Invariably intelligent and thoughtful.
Seconded here. God bless him.
I am truly saddened to hear that shocking news. I am still a newbie, but developed a profound respect for a man whom I’ve never met – Ken Kulak. Learning of his personal history, and his scholastic prowess gave me an immediate respect for the man. And I always appreciated his every word of support, agreement, and nuanced take on every topic. I pray his family find peace and consolation in his passing. This site will always feel as though something is missing without Ken’s “voice”. I will miss him, for as long as I remain here.
Rest in peace, Ken. Pray for us.
RIP Ken (kulak)
You’re free now.
My thoughts, too.
“Free at last, Free at last, Thank God almighty we are free at last.”
RIP Ken (kulak)
I’m very sad to learn of Ken’s passing. I will miss him.
I have never found any words that provide comfort or address these situations, but I was truly sad when I got home and reloaded SDA to find this headline. I fear we have lost more than we know with his passing.
RIP Ken.
At times like this I like to think of the First Law of Thermodynamics and its principle that states that energy can neither be created or destroyed.
And what are we but energy?
And when that doesn’t work, I think of Dragonflies:
Down below the surface of a quiet pond lived a little colony of water bugs. They were a happy colony, living far away from the sun.
For many months they were very busy, scurrying over the soft mud on the bottom of the pond. They noticed that every once in a while one of their colony seemed to lose interest in going about its business with its friends. Clinging to the stem of a pond lily, it gradually climbed out of sight and was never seen again.
“Look!” said one of the water bugs to another. “One of our colony is climbing up the lily stalk. Where do you suppose she is going?” Up, up, up it went slowly. Even as they watched, the water bug disappeared from sight. Its friends waited and waited but it didn’t return. “That’s funny!” said one water bug to another. “Wasn’t she happy here?” asked a second water bug. “Where do you suppose she went?” wondered a third. No one had an answer. They were greatly puzzled.
Finally one of the water bugs, a leader in the colony, gathered them all together. “I have an idea”, he said. “The next one of us who climbs up the lily stalk must promise to come back and tell us where he or she went and why.” “We promise,” they said solemnly.
One spring day, not long after, the very water bug who had suggested the plan found himself climbing up the lily stalk. Up, up, up he went. Before he knew what was happening, he had broken through the surface of the water, and fallen onto the broad, green lily pad above.
He was so tired, and the sun felt so warm, that he decided to take a nap. As he slept, his body changed and when he awoke, he had turned into a beautiful blue-tailed dragonfly with broad wings and a slender body designed for flying.
He couldn’t believe the startling change he saw in his body. His movement revealed four silver wings and a long tail. Even as he struggled, he felt an impulse to move his wings. The warmth of the sun soon dried the moisture from the new body. He moved his wings again and suddenly found himself up above the water. He had become a dragonfly.
Swooping and dipping in great curves, he flew through the air. He felt exhilarated in his new environment. By and by, the new dragonfly lighted happily on a lily pad to rest. Then it was that he chanced to look below to the bottom of the pond. Why, he was right above his old friends, the water bugs! There they were, scurrying about, just as he had been doing some time before. Then the dragonfly remembered the promise: “The next one of us who climbs up the lily stalk will come back and tell where he or she went and why.”
Without thinking, the dragonfly darted down. Suddenly he hit the surface of the water and bounced away. Now that he was a dragonfly, he could no longer go into the water. “I can’t return!” he said in dismay. “At least I tried, but I can’t keep my promise. Even if I could go back, not one of the water bugs would know me in my new body. I guess I’ll just have to wait until they become dragonflies too. Then they’ll understand what happened to me, where I went, and this wonderful new life I’ve been given.” And the dragonfly winged off happily into its wonderful new world of sun and air.
So sad. Ken’s comments were some of the best I’ve read. I’m not certain, but I’m sure I’ve repeated some of them on to others.
Sad news. Ken was grounded. He was one of a very few who could enlighten all of us of true tragedies and oppression with first hand knowledge. He had that even keel of recognizing that most events around us for the last few years, were truly trivial in nature, compared to his past experience.
My heartfelt condolences and prayers to Ken’s family. I might not always have agreed with him, but I always respected his thoughts and wisdom. To the family – during these hard days, there are a lot of thoughts and prayers are with you. And we do hope that, as you come through the dark times, there will be one among you who will take up Ken’s torch and help us with your family’s understanding.
Very sad to hear Ken has passed. He was always thoughtful, and a class act.
Godspeed, Ken.
Very sad to hear. I always appreciated his contributions.
I never met the man, and I consider it a great regret that now I never will. I hope it gives his family some comfort to know the impact he had on so many.
Condolences to the Kulak family from Alberta. I’ve enjoyed Ken’s comments over the years.
OH NO!
I know he was a good person and, therefore, will be at peace for all eternity.
Ken was a man of wisdom and incredible knowledge. Having a similar family backround, it was always enlightening to hear his take on history from the Eastern Block. I (and we) have learned from a man who was willing to share his life with many, untold numbers who frequent this site.
To the Kulak family, thank you for allowing us to have a glimpse into the life and heart of a wonderful man. His passing is one of sadness, but he has planted many seeds which will carry his legacy in all of us here.
May you grieve knowing that many here are grieving as well.
Shalom
Ken, thanks for your many wise and considered comments.
RIP Ken Kulak
Condolences to his Wife and Family.
Sad to hear this news. We are lucky he shared his wisdom….we will miss him.
Like many on this site an intelligent and courageous commenter. May he now be in a better place.
Sad to hear this news. I looked forward to reading Ken’s postings whenever they appeared. Always thoughtful, and informative.
I send my condolences to his family.
“Here’s tae us. Wha’s like us? Damn few, & they’re a’deid.”
RIP Ken. My condolences to the family and I hope it soothes them to know that many of us ‘readers’ of SDA saw value in Ken’s comments. He put the ‘civil’ back into civility.
life is like a book, and Ken was one of it’s chapters. Thanks for your posts Ken, RIP
If you’d like to read some of Ken’s comments tonight as you’re mourning the loss of an SDA friend, he had several on July 1, 2019 Reader Tips. As a Christian, we know we’ll meet him and have a good visit “person-to-person”. My condolences to his family who now have to rely on the good, happy memories they enjoyed with him over the years to complete the years till they meet again. God be with them all.

“Trudeau is vilifying John A. Macdonald to score cheap political points
The Trudeau government’s latest attempt to re-write Canadian history and run-down Canada’s first Prime Minister hit close to home… Sir John A. Macdonald’s one-time home, to be precise.
Mere days before this Canada Day – a holiday made possible by Macdonald’s Confederation determination – the Trudeau Liberals announced they would be re-casting Macdonald’s narrative as part of an ongoing renovation of Bellevue House in Kingston.

Next thing you know he will change the national anthem to the following.

I too, had never met Ken, but always read his comments…sometimes twice.
Informative & always on point.
You will be sorely missed here Ken.
May you rest in peace and may your family find solace knowing he meant much to us here at SDA…well respected and valued.

Ken was an SDA regular who had class, manners, and loads of life skills and experience to share here. This is shocking and sad news. Deepest condolences to his family and friends. RIP, Ken. You will be missed.
From a past contributor and consistent lurker here…
Kulak will be missed.
Godspeed.
Who will fill his shoes?
Mad Mike
I’m surprised and saddened.
R.I.P.
I always enjoyed reading Ken’s missives.
We have lost an Elder Statesman with Ken’s passing. Although I’m a newbie, Ken’s unique observations were always worth reading twice. RIP. I hope Ken’s loved ones read our comments and receive comfort in knowing how many lives he touched in a positive manner.
Very sad… really shocked and saddened to hear this news… God bless Ken and his Family.
As with all the comments above, sad news.
It is indeed a short stage we strut before we return to dust.
I believe it was only last year his wife drove him to the hospital in some distress with a heart condition and successfully dodged that bullet.
Gospel for July 22, 2019
Matthew 13:1-9
He said, ‘Imagine a sower going out to sow. As he sowed, some seeds fell on the edge of the path, and the birds came and ate them up. Others fell on patches of rock where they found little soil and sprang up straight away, because there was no depth of earth; but as soon as the sun came up they were scorched and, not having any roots, they withered away. Others fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them. Others fell on rich soil and produced their crop, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. Listen, anyone who has ears!’
Your sowing among the fields is done Ken (Kulak) and now is time for the harvest a hundredfold. Enjoy your righteous reward and God Bless. RIP. Your insightful contributions and commentary will be missed.
Godspeed as ever…
Cheers

hello Hans.
my take on your post?
I have a form of autism whereby I am wired to look at numbers, provable factual evidence, logical analytical approach to things,
and literal view to the extreme, etc.
at *precisely* the same time, and in fact *because of that*, I CANNOT discount mountains (literally!) of evidence that the Good Book
is a reliable guide to ‘how things are’. aka I truly believe there is a clear possibility, *as much as humanly possible* we all believers will one day join hands and rejoice in an unimaginably peaceful and loving time and place.
just for starters.
RIP Ken. you set the bar high up.
I am saddened by the news and loss.
Ken struck me as a well-read gentleman of great moral fiber.
His contributions to SDA will be dearly missed.
Heartfelt condolences to Ken’s family.
My deepest sympathies, condolences and prayers to the friends and family of Mr.Kulak.
Go with God Ken and may you rest in peace.
Kate, I believe this is “our” Ken, and so if I’m taking too much freedom, please correct me.

I don’t know how to add the photo from the obituary but others who enjoyed and appreciated Ken’s posts will be as glad as I was to finally see him.
RIP
Many thanks, Gellen.
Thank you gellen for the post.
I have been with SDA for a LONG time. Though I comment little , SDA is my morning coffee. There are so many here that are familiar and Ken was one of the comments I read regularly.
Ken’s posts were clear and to the point … I’ll miss his posts.
Rest In Peace Ken
Thanks gellen. I did know Ken’s identity, and Lance had met him several times. We don’t reveal the identity of our readers without their permission, so used his chosen pseudonym in the post.
Good practice Kate. May I suggest that, if you haven’t already done so, send the link to this thread to Ken’s family. Seeing how much we appreciated their departed loved one may give them some small degree of strength in those difficult days.
Huh? Imagine that? Ken appeared to be quite “normal looking” (if not on the handsome side of the spectrum). I sometimes imagine that the conservative posters here are all reallly ollllllld wildhaired, unwashed, crazy-eyed, lunatics. Why? Because that’s how we’re all imagined and portrayed by the media. I sometimes succumb to believing that imagery.
Thanks, gellen, for reminding us that we’re all just like everyone else. No horns. No beards to the floor. Well … all of you, except me … I’m regressing into an unwashed 1960’s dirty hippie.
RIP Ken … I enjoyed reading your insights.
Thanks gellen.
It is times like this that I am reminded how we bond here.
Always respected and appreciated Ken’s POV and comments…a man of wisdom.
My condolences to his family.
