I remember very well the October crisis. Even in western Canada, there was tension. Have to say, though, that my boss was totally cool throughout. Do remember him phoning someone in Ottawa during the crisis and making some comment to the effect of “do you rate extra security?”. But, then, he’d lived through WW II (though I suspect he was one of many who found themselves in “exempt” or “reserved” occupations and so not allowed to resign their posts and enlist) with all the stresses that would entail. I learned a lot working for that man, and remember him with gratitude.

I’m sure that Antifa has support inside the church. It wouldn’t be surprise me if the current Bishop of Rome is sympathetic as he certainly hasn’t condemned its actions, because silence gives consent.

Some 40 years ago, “national liberation struggles” (which, I believe, used to be called civil wars) were all the rage amongst leftists. The congregation I was associated with gleefully gave its seal of approval to the uprisings in Central America and to whatever action the military wing of the African National Congress or the South West African People’s Organization took. It justified that stand by hiding behind the heretical doctrine of “liberation theology”. (After all, didn’t Christ say in the Sermon on the Mount, “blessed are those who have AK-47s and RPGs and know how to use them”?)
I’m sure it was purely coincidental that most, if not all, those “liberation” organizations had communist affiliations and that many of the targets of that “liberation” just happened to be white, particularly American or allied with America.
However, while that congregation was joyously proclaiming that those “liberators” were building the new Jerusalem in their respective countries, by means of the machine gun or grenade, it was mysteriously silent about the Soviet Union’s invasion of Afghanistan. As well, it said zippo about the Polish shipyard workers who rose up against the communist government, though using peaceful means to make their point.
So much for “blessed are the peacemakers”.
