Oral history can be a little vague on some of the details, but occasionally there was someone around to take notes on the indigenous prequel to “white man’s justice”. Samuel Hearne wrote of the nuanced approach to mete out justice for the misdemeanor of camping in one’s own traditional territory in July 1771:

      1. Not quite: Steyn was quoting a Norwegian Imam who said that (and this is not a direct quote, but a paraphrase) that Islam would conquer because they would breed like mosquitoes. That was the quotation that landed him and Maclean’s magazine before the BC Human Rights Commission. As noted yesterday, the same plaintiff made the attempt 4 times against Steyn. He also noted that while the Commission found them guilty by their wacky rules, they did not pursue charges because the commission believed Maclean’s to be too powerful and they would lose on appeal. Further, their next case was against a Toronto comedian who homophobically heckled two lesbian hecklers in the audience while in BC and was tried and convicted IN ABSENTIA (because his comedy gigs dried up and he could not afford to be present or have legal counsel). Yes, the rules of law, such as facing your accusers and being granted counsel, do not apply in the Humans Right courts (a total misnomer if ever there was one).         The only protection you have from government, it limits. Maybe put in your constitution that there can only be 50 laws total, and that number can never be changed.

    Now we have international agencies wanting to investigate, and nothing in the report addresses the problem in a meaningful way. No one benefits from being told they are victims. It is disempowering. And now Canadians must hang their heads in shame. Trudeau continues to do an excellent job of making Canadians feel bad about themselves.

    2. No one benefits from being told they are victims. This is true of course, but never understood by victims. Therefore the disempowering continues. The women who lead this report should be ashamed because nothing will come of it, which was the reason for the investigation in the fist place (that nothing was being done to find out what had happened to these women). This is something that Canada excels at right down to our leader claiming genocide and then flying away somewhere else.

      1. I blame Oprah Winfrey for all this “victimhood”. If everyone is a victim, then nobody is. I agree with Watcher, police statistics do show that it is native men who commit the murders. I think it is long past time to get rid of the Reserves and the Department of Indian and Northern Affairs. I have actually worked with many people who are of aboriginal descent. They do well when they are off-reserve, working jobs, and paying taxes. As always, education is the key – and not necessarily university, but any post-secondary education (I am thinking the trades specifically). It is very difficult to accomplish anything when you only have Grade 6 or Grade 8 completed.

        2. An interesting aspect of this is that the report explicitely states that saying native men are responsible is a “stereotype” because NOT ALL of these crimes were committed by native men. Now if you actually look at the murders committed by non-native men, are the stats any higher for native women than for anyone else? Not likely, ignoring the risky behavior factor. Ultimately, this does seem to be a problem with native men causing the violence. But we already knew this which is why Harper refused to do the enquiry, stating it was time for action. Now we have 92 million going into a black hole and still no place to start addressing the problem — primarily more anger and hurt feelings. Natives must realize that once again they have been used for political fodder. Clearly, brains matter and Trudeau does not have any.

  10. I’m surprised at Groper’s speech at the D Day ceremonies. I would have thought that he would have mentioned that the war time Canadian generation committed genocide. He didn’t even mention the thousands of women, muslims, and homosexuals that stormed the beach. Or mention his father the coward who refused to fight and spent the war partying. And why didn’t our defence minister not explain how he was the first soldier on the beach of Normandy.

  16. Sitting up in the bush in NW ON visiting a trapper buddy. Came in on the train. I asked the conductor when train service went from 3 trains/week to 2. He said Harper cut the service and I should think about that when I vote.

    I then ran into a gal I know on the rez. I asked her how her job in the band office was going as last fall when I talked to her she had just started there. She told me she was laid off because Doug Ford cut the funding.

    We then flew out into the bush in a float plane (Beaver). Upon discovering I was from Alberta the pilot started on me about all those red necks in Alberta and “how do I get along with them?” He was an obvious liberal as he threw in some comments about the religious right and abortion.

    This is what were up against folks. Everything has become political. The overwhelming thought process is liberal in Canada. There is no chance of any change until they run out of our money and have to face the future without other peoples money.

    Politics cant fix anything- only perpetuate it.

Before the Railway was built BC was not even part of Canada…..Without the Railroad Canada only existed in theory… Sir John A connected Canada east to west, without that corridor all commerce would have moved North to South via Mississippi waterway….Canada would have only existed as Upper & lower
    Canada (Ontario/Quebec) BC now wants to break that Connection & destroy Canada

    If the Canadian Government allows BC to break the transportation Corridor, why would Alberta/Sask/ Manitoba allow goods and services to, or from BC to be transported across their Provinces? Canada will become hollow….Huge container traffic to BC would have to be re-routed to/from Upper Canada… Canada would return to it’s original state before Sir John A……
