Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

I try and eat like my parents and grandparents did. Beef, pork, chicken, turkey, fish, potatoes, carrots, turnip, parsnip, cabbage, homemade white bread, bacon, eggs, milk, all those good things. The average age was in excess of 90 with my mother passing at 99 last year. Yep, forget the Canada food guide. Don’t eat to excess, keep junk food to a minimum, you will be ok.
“Don’t eat to excess, keep junk food to a minimum…”
and hold the Melamine!
So Justin’s government wants us all to eat like muslims in Pakistan.
Actually, Justin’s government wants us all to BE like Muslims in Pakistan.
Yes. So his Chinese masters can stuff themselves with pork at every meal.
Nah….this whole food guide is Climate Barbie’s thingy….less Beef/Meats supposedly = less methane..its all about the Climate didnt ya know…
Typical totalitarian BS from a Civil Service unleashed.
I will continue to eat eggs, ham/Bacon, beef, pork Chicken, broccoli, asperagus (damn that shits expensive..!!), Zucchini, salads amoong othr natural foods and hi grain Breads. Italian Dried Italian Sausage, Old Gouda cheese (its a dutch thing) and a few other things.
Don’t and haven’t eaten food out of a CAN in 40 years. We make our own sauces..about the only thing that is processed are condiments.
People who eat a lot of beans fart like lowland guerillas FFS. I know I do!
You do realize that – in China – pork is a vegetable? Had an offspring who did an exchange semester in Hong Kong back in the day and the observation of said offspring was to that effect. And that after eating anything the Hong Kong colleagues could see if could gross said offspring out. They couldn’t. Nor could others recently when another offspring was lecturing in China; some gross dishes, but offspring ate them all.
Actually, Slovakia seems to be on the “pork is a veggie” dish. Reported back in the day were menus to the effect of “egg”, “egg with peas”, “egg with peas and bacon”. And did hear of a “vegeterian lasagne” which had bacon sprinkles. When one is starving, one eats whatever is available.
RE: “Pork is a vegetable,” in China
Probably because they cut it up so small, into teeny tiny weeny little pieces that people thing it is peas! Ha!
Just kidding Frances.
A food guide formed by politics and ideology instead of logic and science. What else would we expect from government? (Particularly this one)
I’ll be sticking to meat mostly…what humans evolved to eat.
Exactly!
“Where’s the beef?”
This comes at a time when more people are eating only meat and say they are feeling better than ever and losing weight. Jordan Peterson is one of them. No doubt the warmists got into the crafting of this manifesto to stop Gorebull warming.
The warmists have their fingerprints all over this, there is no doubt. Anything that criticizes beef and dairy nowadays has its origins in either the vegan, peta or warmist camp. All ideological enemies of common sense.
I’ve revised my own eating habits late last year, and got real. Now on the Keto plan (thanks Dr Berg!) and have dropped 20 pounds, 30 to go. As mentioned by others here, protein portion control, load up the green veggies, enjoy your fats, and avoid all sugars, starches and grains. Amongst other benefits, my snoring is gone and stiffness in my joints is gone too.
This Food Guide stinks, is backward, and politically motivated. No surprise considering the ideological leftist control freaks inhabiting the PMO. This will only continue to result in diabetic overweight people, that follow a plan that has far too much carbs, and little if any fat.
Yeah, if there is an obesity epidemic, then the canada food guide is responsible and always has been. But, everyone just go ahead, and keep unconditionally supporting whatever party, regardless of the failures stacking up. Cause your lifetime record of voting for more of the same, is about to start working out correctly this time. This time is different.
The one thing I have learned from history, is that no one ever learns anything from history.
I’m embracing their acknowledgement of indigenous culture. Meat whenever possible.
First: The Food “Guide” … to help your comrades “eat right”
Next: The Food “Rules” … to force your scofflaw comrades to “eat right”
Then: The Food “Taxes” … to create disincentives for “bad eating”
Then: The Food “Restrictions” … to deny any possibility of “bad eating”
Then: The Food “Confiscations” … to forcibly remove “bad foods” (meat) from “criminals” homes
Then: The Food “Prisons” … where meat-eaters will be force-fed plates of “good food”
Arc of a Culture devolving into Communism
OMG, this has to be a socialist state, we have arrived!
Fruits and grains, don’t ask where’s the beef! Sounds like the recipe for putting out cow paddies.
Everything is agenda driven, an agenda to distract you and your children, to dull the mind of children and re-educate adults into thinking, trust your government, government is compassionate, government cares about you, government knows best, government is here to help you, government will be there to provide free education and healthcare, even a free standard of living with a guaranteed income.
Everyday this filthy media pushes you, prods you, massages you and your family to the left. They don’t stop, they won’t stop. That’s why we’re here.
That’s why the “news” is almost never watched in this home. It is all agenda driven, infotainment, and puppy, kitty, whale and pigeon stories
“We got the bubble-headed bleach-blonde who comes on at five
She can tell you about the plane crash with a gleam in her eye
It’s interesting when people die, give us dirty laundry”
Henley, a good drummer, a better song writer, still have LP “I can’t stand still”
TV went out of my home years ago. But I try to catch CBC news on radio every night because it is important to know what your enemy wants you to think and what the sheeple have been fed.
So these two overweight ladies are telling me what to eat? I don’t think so.
Canada has arrived at the point in which leftist politics is tainting every aspect of our lives.
Old white guy says it well as the first comment. That is what we do in our house and taught our children. Eat a balanced diet with meat everyday.
The only change we have made in our diet is to have smaller portions as we age and are less mobile, and that includes smaller portions of our favourite foods.
When will the Red Guard start patrolling supermarkets?
And restricting beef production? Carbon taxes are a start
When you make 255,000/year as the Minister of Health, the cost of feeding your family is the last thing on your list of concerns. Many people who are buying food to feed their families make what might be considered poor choices because they buy what they can afford.
Their carts are filled with rice and pasta because those items have a long shelf life and they cost less than the vegetables. Add a cheap cut of meat and you have food that may not be politically correct but it’s tasty and happens to be where the real world exists day to day.
…and the dairy? The dairy cartel priced low income people out of that food item years ago.
Next up, the Soylent Corporation …
I lasted about 10 seconds watching that. I’m with “old white guy”.
So this political dietary anti-meat statement comes out at a time when real academics have concluded that meat and animal fat is the healthiest way to consume calories. Sugars and starches are the least healthy. Load up on green horse feed and you fart like a horse. You can’t eat enough green crap to sustain yourself unless you are sedentary.
An afterthought. Has anyone actually ever read the food guide? I sure haven’t and I’m old.
Saturated fat intake increases serum cholesterol levels. Elevated serum cholesterol increases your risk of atherosclerosis. There is a mountain of evidence supporting these statements.
Would it kill you guys to eat some beans?
My doctor told me that cholesterol is hereditary and has nothing to do with diet. I believe he’s right.
Yes there is a large hereditary component to cholesterol. Some people have naturally higher levels than others.
What is also true is that everyone increases serum cholesterol levels when they ingest saturated fats. Also true, higher cholesterol levels are associated with higher risk of atherosclerosis.
Also true, doctors typically have less than 24 hours of training on nutrition during medical school, and are typically ill equipped to give advice on nutrition. Aren’t facts interesting.
If you read from the old books, that is what it says. Yet people still got fat and got heart disease, so something is wrong with that theory. I watched my grandfather die of heart disease, 8 years after triple bypass. He was a lean guy, and followed doctors diet, didn’t smoke, didn’t drink, and was active.
There is a gathering mountain of evidence, that what we thought about fats, are falsehoods. The real enemy is sugar and carbs, processed foods, not dairy and red meat. Based on science, results, and how overweight and diabetics (type 2) have reversed their disease, and got fit, by deleting the carbs. This includes their blood pressure returning to normal, and actually not needing meds anymore, a sure fire sign of vastly improved cardio health.
It’s clear that past, and current food guides are still not healthy, and the medical system is still playing catch-up to what is really healthy and unhealthy food.
And yes, your body creates the cholesterol, diet has little to do with it. In fact, cholesterol is vital to our bodily functions
Jim, I don’t think anyone here would mind a few beans on their plate so I am not sure what your point is.
I have lived long enough to remember when eggs were considered evil, and the experts all turned out to be wrong. I have eaten an egg a day my entire life and I am still standing. And most days my entire life I have either had some beef, chicken, lamb, fish, etc. and that hasn’t felled me either.
I’ve ignored the “no fat” recommendations all my life, as did my parents who died at 102 and 98 respectively. I am in my 70’s and am told that my cholesterol is “ideal”.
No. But whenever I do it kills everyone around me.
I honestly don’t care if beef goes to $200/kg I will buy it, and hence I will continue to enjoy my steaks and roasts. Ditto for dairy.
And I will continue to ensure my kids enjoy the same.
“I will continue to enjoy my steaks and roasts”
…and any health problem you may encounter will have very little to do with your enjoyment of meat, eggs or dairy.
This subject has been covered quite a bit here on SDA.

For the record, here is the Wikipedia bio on our “Minister of Health” (emphasis mine):
Petitpas Taylor grew up in Dieppe and graduated from the Université de Moncton with a bachelor’s degree in social work. From 2004 to 2008, she was the chairwoman of the New Brunswick Advisory Council on the Status of Women, and has held a variety of other jobs aimed at advancing and protecting women’s rights, notably as the coordinator for the Victim’s Services Program of the local detachment of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.[3] She won the Liberal Party’s nomination for Moncton—Riverview—Dieppe on March 28, 2015, and won the riding itself in the election held on October 19, 2015.[4]
No degree in science. Not a doctor. Not one ounce of education or experience even remotely related to diet. Zip. Nada. But she is responsible for the new food guide.
C’mon, this is the sunny ways cabinet. The only qualification required is vajayjay.
Because it’s 2019.
That qualifies her for any and every position in government or private business. Try to keep up.
Becauthe it’th 2019?
To be fair, someone at the UN probably came up with this.
This is the nanny state doing what they do. If you accept the premise that others are responsible for the costs of your health care then it is illogical to be opposed to the idea of the collective will of others, personified in a federal ministry of health, to be suggesting and increasingly compelling you to eat what they say. Personally, this is just another needless ministry of silly walks herding the bovine masses. Besides, a 15 minute clip from the CBC is well beyond my annual cumulative quota.
So much for our socialist fed gov’t supporting our traditional farming & cattle industry. They groupify every aspect of our lives with black and white ideological proclamations irrespective of valid fact supported opposing views. Can’t help themselves. But then again the mentally ill rarely can help themselves or others because their thought processes and judgment abilities are unbalanced. Just like their official food guide stamped diet. Can’t wait until they add the green crackers.
Why don’t we skip through all the BS and adopt the Venezuela Food Guide as it currently stands.
That is where the progressives are taking us.
Yup so “educational” to have an overweight scold ,tell me what is “good to eat”.
I got a recipe for parasite control,Old Maori delicacy
Puha & Pakeha.A.K.A Long Pig.
After decades of miserable failure, one would hope the government would have the self awareness to just shut up.
Salt is good,salt is bad.
Animal fat is evil,Animal fat is good.
The collesteral lies are still going on,my doctor still tries to impose statins on me,even after the “science” got tossed.
So far every piece of well meaning advise from the bureaus,is either self obvious or outright rubbish.
Yet they “are here to help us” once again.
People are not factoring in genetics, poor eating/sleeping/exercise habits and the rising prices of food.
Switch emphasis from fruits to grains and vice-versa but it won’t matter if people prefer sitting on the fat @$$es eating junk food or if their grandmothers lived well into their nineties.
There’s a great book out right now call “Big Fat Surprise” by Nina Teicholz. Filled with actual data and studies supporting that we are designed to eat meat with fats. Look it up and you’ll be amazed. The author did a good interview with Rogan if you want the video version.
Thank you for this recommendation. Just looked it up and read the summary. Very interesting. Have ordered it!
The government should control the food supply, as it does with health care and marijuana.
You mean like the Soviets did in Ukraine in the early 1930s? Patience son, patience. The carbon tax applied to all farm inputs will take us a long way toward that.
In honour of the new Food Guide, for dinner tonight I am making the family:
– homemade mozzarella cheese sticks to nibble on while dinner gets made
– 5 large tenderloin steaks cooked on the grill
– homemade Bernaise sauce to go with the steaks
– shrimp on the side, sauteed in garlic and clarified butter
– homemade french fries finished in truffle oil, bit of Parmesan cheese
– carrots roasted in butter/oil combo, herbs, finished with a dash of honey
– strawberry ice cream topped with blackberries shipped from Mexico (Ha! Take that CO2 haters).
– wine/beer for the wife and me
– whole milk for the kids
– water for the dog (and also a sliver of steak for him too)
Marni Soupcoff writes a cute one here:
https://nationalpost.com/opinion/marni-soupcoff-do-we-really-need-the-government-to-tell-us-what-to-eat?video_autoplay=true
nold yours I didn’t work hope this does: good article.
https://nationalpost.com/opinion/marni-soupcoff-do-we-really-need-the-government-to-tell-us-what-to-eat
That’s queer Nancy; lingually dinosaur-like speaking. Both your link and my link works on my desktop PC.
Yes how odd! I received a ‘not viable link type of message’, wish I copied it to tell you exactly what it said, I can’t even find it in my ‘history’. It shows the 2 good links though . Oh well, I was just trying to be helpful. I do like to read Marni Soupcoff’s articles so when it didn’t link, I read it on NPwebsite, therefore it was nothing to copy it since I was ‘there’….yada, yada, yada.
Soupcoff mocks, rightfully so, the new Food Guide for telling, no, lecturing, people to, excuse me, “play music while cooking and eating, not to eat alone, to host potlucks and redecorate one’s dining room”. Very strange, indeed. When I saw that I knew that it was going to be mocked. How stupid- she gets paid 255k for that!
So after enjoying the article and reposting, I tried mine and it worked. Then I retried yours, which had more letters i.e.”video autoplay= true” I figured yours wouldn’t work because of that. Lo and behold it worked! Go figure. Maybe it is due to the waning full moon. Ha!
