More on Der Fakenewser;
In February 2017, my husband and I attended a concert at our local theater, and were sipping some wine in the lobby before the show started. Several people came up to us at separate times excitedly, and asked, “did you meet the German guy yet?!”
I hadn’t, but my spider senses perked up when I heard that he worked for Der Spiegel, a magazine based in Hamburg, and that he was writing about the state of rural America in the wake of Trump’s presidency.

Relotius has received accolades for his daring quest to live among us for several weeks. And yet, he reported on very little actual truth about Fergus Falls life. In 7,300 words he really only got our town’s population and average annual temperature correct, and a few other basic things, like the names of businesses and public figures, things that a child could figure out in a Google search. The rest is uninhibited fiction (even as sloppy as citing an incorrect figure of citywide 70.4% electoral support for Trump, when the actual number was 62.6%), which begs the question of why Der Spiegel even invested in Relotius’ three week trip to the U.S., whether they should demand their money back from him, and what kind of institutional breakdown led to the supposedly world-class Der Spiegel fact-checking team completely dropping the ball on this one.

Speaking of our moral and intellectual superiors
yesterday on the most watched tv news channel in quebec ( yes I’m in quebec) which is called TVA ( their news channel is LCN ) and is watched by something like 3 million french quebecers or more,
Their reporter who is on site at the white house said that the Fed raising the rates and causing the Stock Market to drop would make us MORE money in our RRSP and in 401 K for Americans
Yes you read that right ; a crashing stock market will make you more money
well if your entire RRSP or 401K is inverse hedge funds maybe, but I doubt that more than 1 % of the population have RRSPs and 401Ks full of inverse hedge funds that go up when the markets go down
His saying a crashing market would make us more money is like me saying that the more you drink Vodka the less drunk you will be
Be it in Germany, England, Ireland, the USA or quebec, 99% of the media are clones of each other ; they all lie 90 % of the time as long as those lies help the left and their narrative which is also 90 % lies.
So why fact check anything when the leftist parties will slip you brown enveloppes full of cash as long as you help them stay in power?
Consulting a card reader or a tea leaves reader would provide the average Joe with more accurate information than watching the news on tv
A crashing market is now a good thing for your portfolio…yes that is what he said, I wish I had recorded that because some will not believe me.
You say, they @ T.V.A. said ,” a crashing market is now a good thing for your portfolio”…
If prices drop, just buy more stock …is perhaps what they’ve may have suggested. A focus on dividend yield is vital.
Nancy … you sound like an olllllllld investor, like my grandmother who always invested in “Blue Chip” stocks. You know, in companies who actually make a profit and SHARE those profits with investors. How olllllllld fashioned. I suspect you made NO $$ on the dot.con Clinton Market … wherein business writer geniuses, like David Lazarus, told us we were in the “New Economy” where businesses no longer needed to make profits. That market only FAILED because of the Bushes, doncha know … Now, you need to BUY Fackebook with both hands, at the low, low, price of $130/share … you can do it! You can catch the falling knives! I have faith in you … and in the “new” economy.
Kenji …
No, no belief in •commie or as you say . con
No, especially no Fackebook.
No, can’t catch falling knives.
( and furthermore… No, no $1200 phone for me.
The phone company is woohoo angry with me because I still have a flip phone. They can pry it from my post mortem hands too, like dear Kate!)
You know I was just joshing … you sound far too smart and wise for such folly.
I swear, I’m gonna Trade my fancy i-slave “smart” phone for a “dumb” model. All my hipster clients do ALL their business on the damn i-phone. They don’t even use email anymore. Gawwd … it’s getting harder and harder to hide from them. And, of course, the demand an INSTANT response. I have to remind them that my i-phone is in the desk drawer most of the time … so no, I didn’t hear you call or text message me. Sheesh.
▪@ Kenji 10:23pm
Joshing’s good!
no that is not what he said or meant, he did not say to buy low and sell high
he said the Fed raising rates, no matter if it makes the market crash was good for our RRSP
…as if that alone would magically help our investments
TVA is extremely anti Trump, and they could not admit that the Fed raised the rates for only one reason ; to Hurt Trump
so he had to fabricate stuff
2 years ago that same journalist was telling us Trump would cause wars and possibly world war three
but yesterday he was telling us it was very very bad thing that Trump is putting an end to war in Syria
TVA will say anything, even the opposite of what they said the day before as long as they can bash the right and make the left look good
I don’t believe the Press much anymore and take them with a grain of salt.
As for one’s personal portfolio, one only loses if one sells. You are best to speak to the professionals though.
Well doesnt this just illustrate:
Wall Street. Multi Nationals and Global Investment firms selling derivatives and other assorted BETS (junk), as “investments”. Companies that dont “make” anything and could care less about the US/CAN Economy or its people….so visibly demonstrated in 2008 along with the Politicians who used OUR Tax Dollars to “bail them out”….utterly Criminal. (DEEP State. anyone??)
Main Street. The working Folks of North America. Those that used to do that old Fahioned thing: SAVING their money or investing in REAL Companies..?? .and also the ones that got screwed with sub primes (although, I gotta say that many were too stupid to read the fine print)…that made so many millionaires.
Time to go back to the old fashioned ways….it worked.
I suspect this facke Der Spiegel writer has watched too many US cartoons on Nick at Night. Why Fergus Falls, MN? … well the alliterative nameplace “sounds” funny. But more importantly … it sounds remarkably similar to Frostbite Falls … Home of Bullwinkle and Rocky.
https://www.minnesotafunfacts.com/minnesota-in-mass-media/television-shows/the-rocky-and-bullwinkle-show/
The Bullwinkle Show (written by a local, Berkeley, CA realtor, Jay Ward … who had a RE office directly cross Ashby Bl. from the landmark Claremont Hotel) … was a spoof of the Cold War with *gasp* Russia. Ward was a hardcore liberal, and the cartoon a favorite of leftists everywhere for its mockery of the oh-so-dangerous Soviet Union. I suspect, this Der Spiegel writer was “taught” this cartoon in one of his Political Science University classes about how to fight conservatives with cartoonish narratives. How to mock conservatives, without them “knowing” it. I suspect the writer looked on a US map for small towns with “Falls” in their town name … and just picked one that sounded funny …
And why Minn.? When did Blue MN turn RED? In 2016? Everyone and everything I know about MN is that the people there are all hardcore leftists, including my ex-next door neighbor who had multiple signed pictures of HRC throughout his house because of all the $$$ he donated to HER. I expect “rural” MN is far more leftist than any other US State. Odd choice for the writer … meaning my Spider Radar would be going off before I read a single WORD of his fantasy novella.
He should have visited a REAL … RED … US rural town. Missed opportunity to actually LEARN something
“And why Minn.?”
I wondered this, too. Perhaps he knows that it’s Blue and figured that fabricating a good yarn to further some liberal narrative will be appreciated – and forgiven – by the locals since this is, as we all know, how journalism is done *wink, wink*.
So the star reporter has resigned from Der Speigel and has admitted to making up numerous interviews over the years. I believe I saw a quote yesterday where he said he was a very sick man who needed help. Let’s hope he gets help and gets better and uses his obvious talents to report the truth.
The MSM jumps on stories and articles that support the narrative, they must be true! Too good to check.
Der Spiegel exists in a German progressive bubble. They could have written their pre-conceived narrative from home with as much accuracy. If you took that same journalist to a small town in Germany where their own “deplorables” were protesting immigration he would likely be equally out of his element.
About 25 years ago, I hosted European journalists (pulp customers) including one from Der Spiegel on a tour of forest operations on Northern Vancouver Island. We covered most ground from the air in a Helicopter so they couldn’t accuse us of showing them only the pristine. They had been told by Green Peace (in those days partially funded by payroll deduction of German autoworkers) that there were no more trees in BC. At the end of the tour, they admitted that they had been lied to by Green Peace. You show a German a black bear grazing in a regenerated forest and they think they have gone to heaven.
presently reading ‘More Money than God’
various chapters on the likes of soros and a slew of other players.
many of whom created the boom and fell with the bust.
More on this here – this is the tip of the iceberg.

Der Spiegel’s 70 person fact-checking team is “better than Google”.

They could easily be right.
I know this is simplistic and been heard before, but here goes.
Quiz question: How can you tell when a liberal is lying?
Quiz answer: It is talking, or in this case writing.
See also the next thread above.
“We find this hilarious, if not a little inspiring for a future event idea …”
They should make it an annual event and call it “Relotius Daze”. Think of the tourism!
The writer was one of the town’s few liberals.
He seems most upset about how the urban media distorts or simply invents its accounts of rural America.
It never occurs to him that the entire purpose of the MSM is to tell gullible urban readers what their masters want them to hear. If he’s so fond of discussing local and national issues with his conservative neighbours, perhaps he should start listening to them and not to the New York Times.
… or to CNN and their *ahem* award winning journalists.
Also, he doesn’t appear to recognize the Gell-Mann amnesia effect either. He now knows first hand a whole host of whoppers that were sold to a foreign audience. What are all the other MSM lies that he swallowed that reinforce his own world view?
Exactly so. The writer cannot seem to grasp that all the other “news” stories he swallows, hook, line, and sinker, are written by the same biased folks who will invent reality to match their prewritten narrative.
Dont get why he tried to harm fellow travellers. The lady is a BLM loon.
Yes, they had learned from the National Socialist German Workers’ Party, National Ministry for Public Enlightenment and Propaganda minister of propaganda.
Herr Goebbels.
They know the stuff like the palms of their stinking hands
