It is not wrong to say that the demonstrations were caused by the government’s decision to raise gas prices. What is missing is that this is just one of several draconian measures dating back half a year, i.e., ‘tis the proverbial straw that broke the camel’s back.

 

For the past four to five months, the French government has done nothing but double down on bringing more and more gratuitous oppression and more and more unwarranted persecution measures down on the necks the nation’s drivers and motorcycle riders.

 

In fact, the imposition of ever harsher rules has been going on for the past decade and a half or so — whether the government was on the right or on the left …/…

 

…/… What has been most irksome for les Français since the turn of the century has been the ubiquitous radars, which, like red-light cameras in the United States, are accused of having (far) more to do with bringing revenue to the state than with road safety.

 

And just like the arms industry in the Soviet Union, if there was one area of France where the technology was always moving forward, it was the radar business.

        1. I served in Afghanistan in 2007 when a German (OMLT)- Operational Mentor Liaison Team came down with an Afghan battalion they were mentoring. The short of it was that the Germans weren’t allowed to go outside the wire in KAF to do combat operations with the Afghans they were mentoring (the Americans took the Afghans). Speaking to a German captain (my peer) he essentially said, “Look you guys didn’t want us to be war-like–it took 60+ years now we’re not war-like you ask us to become war-like. Our culture cannot be turned on a dime.”

          1. I was also in KAF in 2007 with the Sperwer Flight. Germans were about 3500 troops up in RC North. In RC South I thought they were strictly trainors? And just maybe a Coy- size element?

      1. The French electoral system is seriously flawed. Macron does not have the overwhelming support that the second round run-off vote would seem to indicate. The first round vote of a French Presidential Election is far more indicative of what the electorate is feeling.

        During the first round 4 candidates were all within 5% of the vote of each other: Macron 23.87%, Le Pen 22.23%, Fillon 19.48%, and Melenchon 18.89%. That’s hardly a ringing endorsement. French law requires a runoff to occur between the top two candidates should no one receive a majority in the first round. So Macron beats Le Pen 61.79% to 38.21%. But based on the first round results over 75% of the French prefer another leader. Just like more than 60% of Canadians did not vote for Trudeau.

        The problem is Macron rules as if he actually has over 60% support. He goes ahead with his agenda believing he has the mandate. These protests are a real reminder he is sadly mistaken. Perhaps it’s time for the 6th Republic. Say what you want about the American system, but you have to drum up a lot of support across a lot of different levels to get anything done.

      2. Not sure if Macron will be re-elected. These demos of public unrest can escalate fast and next thing we know, Macron resigned as President. One thing is more likely is that Justin Trudeau gets re-elected next year and at the rate things evolve over time with his free spending & globalist rhetoric in the not so Great, not so White North it will take much time for “old stock” canucks to get mad and take to the streets.

    1. Usually, it takes Canada four or five years to catch up with trends in Europe. When the pozz spreads into people’s lives and affects them personally, some of them might re-think this, maybe enough to slow the decline a bit if not arrest it. But it’s going to take a lot more suffering.

    The Germans are hurray crowd people, they are docile and in step with the orders.
    Have to say though that they have done well until the Arab invasion.
    Merkel though while uncertain, still have the support of most Germans.

    Eventually the French will fold like accordion. Neatly one by one.

  13. I had an airport limo ride from a guy German guy who visited family back in Germany in September – October. He mentioned that nobody in Germany exceeds the speed limit by more than 1km/hr anywhere. Radar is everywhere, on every highway, on every street, on every path.

  17. Big Brother Radar. $$$$ for the State. The State is insatiable. It exists now … only to expand and perpetuate its power. Breaking the people financially, and expanding its own wealth is the goal. A totalitarian State who owns the means and the production of all goods and services.

    Looks like the State has LOST the police and firefighters who are siding with the people. France will have to call up the military to quash the uprising and enforce the decrees of the State.

    1. As you may (or may not) know, the gendarmerie is a branch of the army.
      Typically, they don’t get involved in this sort of thing, there are city police forces (in the bigger cities) and the national police (CRS) who are explicitly charged with riot control. They have been somewhat neutered as I believe they can no longer carry/use firearms in riot control. Presumably, if a shooting war broke out the gendarmes would move in?

  26. I have a theory on this subject. All across Eurostan, people can be prosecuted and even imprisoned for saying
    an unkind word about the Muslim invasion of Europe. Resistance against this invasion is growing by the day.
    Poland, Hungary, and Italy are fighting back and populist political movements and parties are on the rise all
    across the continent. Back in the 70s and 80s, Europeans were paying 7 or 8 dollars per gallon at the pump
    at a time when the standard of living was much lower than it is now. Could it be that this is a convenient
    excuse to raise a little hell, something Eric Hoffer called a focusing agent?

    From what I have been able to gather, Macron, May, Merkle, and the PM of Sweden are in deep crap! They
    are about as popular a case of the clap. In the past 5 years, I have seen the rise of populist movements and
    leaders arise from grassroots movements across Europe. UKIP, English Defense Leauge, Sons of Odin, PEGIDA,
    etc. This is a safe way to protest without being branded a racist or a xenophobe. Belgium has just joined the
    yellow vest battle. They will not be the last. When the crap started to hit the fan in Europe, I correctly predicted
    that Poland would be the first to rebel against the EU.

    If you have any knowledge of 20th-century European history, you have to understand that Germany, Finland,
    Englan, Scotland, Ireland, America, Canada, and Australia are not the kind of people you want to screw with.
    Neither are French who in the 18th century revolted against the aristocracy. Even the cheese-eating
    surrender monkeys in France will grab their pitchforks once enough of their children die in terror attacks!

  30. It’s likely a mistake to interpret any of this as a call from Les Deplorables for a reduction in the oppressions and excesses of the nanny state. It’s happening only because individual budgets for le relaxation, le Rocquefort, et le Rothschild Chateau Lafitte have been affected by the fuel prices.
