    On the news coverage that the Canadian federal gov’t is going to give some of next generation’s taxpayer’s money to the main stream media so they can continue to uphold their brave tradition of keeping democracy in Canada balanced and accountable.

    I can’t imagine the fellatio that’s going to take place within the news outlets of the nation for this reward, especially in the lead up year to a federal election.

    1. Gavin McInnis lost a lot of cred when he dabbles in far-right advocacy, like that video where he, in a drunk state, went off into an anti-Jewish rant. I get it, he is a comedian, and has anarchistic views. But anti-establishment satire – and conservative comics –is in serious short supply, on both sides of the border. He could do fine work as a conservative satirist. I could never understand his Proud Boys venture.

    1. The first episode of Doctor Who, with William Hartnell, was shown the next day. Although it was well-received, it was overshadowed by what happened in Dallas.

        1. I don’t think so. Star Wars was inspired by the writings of Joseph Campbell. Star Trek, on the other hand, was independently developed by Gene Roddenberry.

          Doctor Who was originally intended to be a short-run children’s series, lasting only a few weeks. The producer, Canadian-born Sidney Newman, tried for quite a while to convince Auntie Beeb to make the show. His persistence paid off when the reviews of the first episode were positive and DW quickly became popular.

          I’m old enough to remember when the CBC first showed it, which was on Saturday afternoons starting in early 1965. It was shifted to, I think, Wednesday afternoons and disappeared soon after that. After I started grad studies nearly 15 years later, I found out from some of my fellow students that the show was still being produced.

    2. Amazing that 55 years have passed since then. Everyone should read JFK and the Unspeakable: Why He Died and Why It Matters. I have read a number of books on the Kennedy Assasination. It was (perhaps) a first glimpse into the power of the deep state that is still with us.

      1. Yes the time has gone by quickly since the death of JFK. It is hardly mentioned anymore. I haven’t read the book you suggested, though I’ve read others. I don’t believe the whole truth will ever come out.

  6. I just came from the Globe and Mail web site, reading about the $595-million handout (bribe?), by the Justin Trudeau government, to the establishment newspaper cartel. The “comments” section beneath the article is about 99% against the bribe, and the comments are often bitter.

    One tidbit: the Liberal government is going to form an “independent” panel to see who gets the government dough (dinero negro, surely). Needless to say, the membership will be leftist, and their actions will not be accountable, nor will the paid-and-bought-for media hold the panel to account. We will have a Swedish-type newspaper media.

More than half a BILLION dollars to try to keep afloat a dying industry that adds no value to the Canadian economy, but the industries that do and face issues can’t get the PMO on the phone. The conflict of interest is egregious, but at least now we know where the carbon tax is going.

      1. Some groups inside the Lutheran church have similar views. They consider dancing to be a greater sin than breaking the Seventh Commandment.

  11. As some Canadian readers have already noted, today is Thanksgiving Day here south of the 49th parallel (in my case, between the 41st and 42nd parallels). One of the many things that I am thankful for is this website. I have departed from Linkedin and three blogs during the past six months or so because of the offensively bad manners demonstrated by commenters or those posting at or in charge of the sites. I have never encountered this here, and I am very grateful for that. For perhaps fifteen years now, this has been a place where I can come to read the interesting thoughts of others and the news from Canada, and where I have been able to post my opinions and attempts at humor, knowing that the posts and the comments will be civil and thoughtful. I hope that all here have much to be thankful for, today and every day.

    1. Happy Thanksgiving Jim. I suggest the thin veneer of civility that Canadians project is a cultural construct that can disappear quickly. I certainly do not think our public discourse superior to that of Americans.

      I have always wanted to visit Waterloo, Iowa as my family roots back to the 1820’s are there. Will make it one day.

As a friend of mine (who claims to be a bit of an historian) used to remind me, many of the Canadians living in Southern Ontario are descendants of Americans who came to Canada during the war of 1812. Yes, some came to fight. But others came because they supported the Crown and many stayed and became good Canadians.

      There is a difference between Canadian and American cultural civility. I blame the cold weather. Make sure you’re friends with your neighbor because you never know when you’ll need someone to jump-start your car or pull you out of the snow.

    Obama’s “Becoming” (2018) sold 1.4 million copies in its first week with 3 million copies printed.

    That makes Michelle 4.5 times more popular that Hillary.

    1. I am always suspect of political book deals. The sales numbers don’t seem realistic, nor do the advances. Not sure how, but it looks like it could be a good front for laundering bribes and payoffs to politicians.

      Stephen King for example sold 350 million copies worldwide spread over 70 books. Do they really expect Michelle Obama to sell like a Stephen King book? I remember hearing about how much Wab Kinew (MB NDP leader) claimed to have made in book royalties (explaining how he paid off some debts) and thinking the royalties far outstripped the potential market for his book.

      No proof of this of course, and not sure how the scam would work, but it seems odd that politicians writing books all seem to get big paydays, when the average book sells only a few thousand copies.

  23. Now Switzerland is refusing to sign the UN Immigration Pact. This “signing” is happening around Dec. 11th, 12th. This is a major world issue, but the Canadian media seems oblivious. Of course there will likely be various articles POST signing (likely talking about how wonderful it is), and of course Canada will sign. Surely some sort of informed public dialogue in advance regarding measures that will profoundly change the country is appropriate in a democracy.
