One of the enduring mysteries of the contemporary Catholic Church is why so many priests know about practicing homosexuals in the priesthood, but don’t do anything about it. An egregious example comes to mind from when I lived in New York City under Cardinal John O’Connor, and then Cardinal Edward Egan. A gay-friendly parish downtown used to hold pro-gay events all the time, many of which could not be justified in any authentically Catholic sense. I recall them once advertising an LGBT-oriented sex toy event in the church basement, though I can’t remember whether that was under O’Connor’s reign or Egan’s. It didn’t matter. That parish was going to do what it was going to do no matter what, and the chancery wasn’t going to stop it.
There are a liberal Catholic priests, both gay and straight, who know who the sexually active conservative closet cases are, and won’t out them. There are conservative Catholic priests, both straight and chastely gay, who have no obvious interest in protecting the closet, who nevertheless don’t out liberals who are sexually active. Why is that?
A gay Catholic friend told me that it’s because both sides live under a Cold War policy of Mutually Assured Destruction. They will snipe at each other in proxy wars, but when it comes right down to it, they will not turn on each other directly, because once the first missile is fired, there’s no stopping them. Both sides know that such warfare could destroy the institution that they both depend on. So they practice restraint, despite mutual loathing.

I am not a catholic but as a Christian I have more than a passing interest in the workings of all churches. Many years ago (at least 30) I read an article about the shortage of priests in the catholic church and about how at least part of the problem being that the gay seminarians/clergy made becoming a priest very very difficult for a straight man who felt called to become a priest. I have no way of knowing how true such a statement is but if it is true then indeed the church is reaping what it sowed.

This was not without protest by the married clergy, one of whom bitterly remarked that the hierarchy was very quick to get rid of wives and children, but not so quick to get rid of boyfriends.
Churches are no different than any other kind of institution. You make a big pile of money, scumbags will show up with wheelbarrows to take it. Everyone likes to pretend churches are different, but they’re not. So if we all stop pretending, that might be an improvement.
The other problem is sex, of course. The one thing everybody wants more of. You tell them they can’t have it, they will find a way around you. So possibly leaving corrupt adult men and women alone in charge of little boys and girls is an incredibly bad idea, and we should stop doing it.

I’v been reading about the RCC and corruption for over 30 years, and it never gets any better. 2 investigative reporters wrote a book on the corruption and criminality in the Vatican, and were speedily taken to court, the the church rectums were trying SO hard to be PC in their investigations of covering up sexual abuse, in 6 different countries. One being the Vatican it’s self, and another was in Pennsylvanian.

The Catholic Church is roughly 2,000 years old……. pretty darn enduring I’d say. During that time there have been good popes and bad popes and nondescript popes. There has been corrupt governance, good governance and indifferent governance of the church. Politics has ALWAYS, ALWAYS played a role in the Church. I suspect it will survive this “scandal” as it has others……. but I don’t really care one way or the other.
I left the Catholic religion behind at age 17 and have no regrets about doing so. My reasons were not about homosexual or pedophile priests (it’s a fine line distinction between the two categories).

The portion of the article quoted here makes about 6+ references to ‘gay’ or ‘homo’, but not one single mention of pedophilia. Radcliffe, Vassar, Smith, Sarah Laurence, and others are now dominated by lesbians.
It is not hard to understand why lesbians would prefer to attend women’s universities. However, eventually the students acquire their degrees and then begin to assume teaching positions and become the administration.

Those of us who are awaiting the return of Christ, as prophesied in the Bible, knew there would be a cleansing in the church before his return. There will be a cleansing everywhere in the public sphere but it will begin in the church. I think we can all agree that it began several years ago and so we can only expect that there will be more exposure as time goes on. What has gone on in secret will be broadcast on the rooftops, so hold onto your hats because we have a long way to go. None of us knows, not Jesus Himself, when God will give Him the command so be prepared.
