The Canada Revenue Agency took action against the Ottawa Islamic Centre and Assalam Mosque following audits that raised concerns about its roster of guest speakers.
“Many of the views expressed by the organization’s speakers are misogynistic, homophobic, racist and/or promote violence,” the CRA Charities Branch wrote in a letter sent to the mosque president.
The CRA was also concerned that “radicalized individuals” had attended the mosque, one of whom, Ashton Larmond, is now imprisoned for attempting to join the so-called Islamic State.

A non-profit is typically exempt from income tax.
A registered charity can provide tax deductible donation receipts plus it is exempt from income tax if it follows spending rules. These rules do not allow it to accumulate cash without a specific purpose and permission. Also it’s purpose must be charitable not political.

I don t think the government should be taxing or non_taxing anyone or any organization base on their religious beliefs or lack of religious beliefs. This should also apply to Greenpeace, anti oil organizations and the anti nuclear crowd just to name a few. They should be entitled to their opinion and also to free speech. They should not be exempt from taxes that ordinary citizens have to pay on their income, capital gains or other types of investments.
