Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

A branch of math I’ve never heard of before. Very cool. They use it to do 3D modeling and run spacecraft. And your phone.
Though the math is WAY over my head, (through a glass darkly and all that) I too was impressed by the “kewl mathematics” article. Some people are really, really smart in in certain ways. Worth a read in my opinion.
As a side note, I think it regrettable that she has no children as I am a believer that lifting the intellect of humanity is an important task.

Yeah, when you have someone leaving the negotiating table to campaign against you ….. seeking alliances with your political opponents in order to undermine your legitimacy and authority …… it just might cause hard feelings.
As a negotiating tactic she should have realized that this, while potentially reaping great benefits, also came with great risk. What was she thinking???!! Best thing now is to replace her with Steven Harper and get it done (I really laugh at my own jokes).
If this has been highlighted here before, I apologize. It is James Delingpole’s interview with Ezra Levant. But if you haven’t heard this, it is a great summary of the Tommy Robinson case in U.K.. It is appalling that Britain has fallen to such depths. The decision on Tommy’s appeal is expected any day now. Let’s hope for the best/

Too many people still do not get what a complete phony Trudeau is. It is reassuring, though, that this guy says he previously voted for the Libs. That means that the message is penetrating somewhere that the Liberal government has an agenda which is favoring some groups and destroying the country. It should be obvious to many more people.
Yeah, one guy has come to his senses regarding the Groper and like you I hope others follow… unfortunately I don’t have much hope that others will… The stupid is so strong in this country its scary.

They’ll probably be microaggressed when you mow the back yard.
We had something similar when I was a kid. only we called them forts.
While these “pods” are kind of cool ….. a club house for adults as it were …. they are for the wealthy only. Start with the base cost of $30,000. Add site prep, water, internet, electric, maybe sewer, + assembly + increased property taxes + zoning resolution and …….well not cheap. Easily $100,000.00.
Buy an old RV for less than $10,000. Rent a space at an RV park for $50/month. Water & electric included. RV comes with kitchen, bedroom, bath, sewer connection, storage space, heater, awning. Internet available at additional cost. Not hip but affordable.
The alternative is living in a van down by the river!
Agreed. Taking a dump in the kitchen-living room tends to kill the mood when the millennial finally ensnares a date.
The Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives (a collection of communist lawyers and economists) wants Canada to implement an inheritance tax starting with estates over $5 million. I say starting because we know where this would lead. As rich people get their money out of the way of government, the lack of new tax revenue will lead the government to drop the minimum estate value to “just give us your money” levels. Because, only unsophisticated people can’t avoid the taxman.
http://www.cbc.ca/news/business/inheritance-tax-ccpa-1.4767137
The author fails to point out that the beneficiary of an estate faces enormous tax consequences for a large inheritance because it is treated as income in the year it is paid. Even if treated as a capital gain that is essentially 15% to the government.
Even if treated as a capital gain that is essentially 15% to the government.
Yup. I lost about 10% of my inheritance to the government earlier this year when I paid the taxes on my father’s estate. After all, there are all of Surfer (Soy) Boy’s “personal days” that need to be financed and Climate Barbie’s shuttle buses need money to operate.
I agree. Pretty much ditto here when we settled my mother’s and mother-in-law’s estates. You pay tax to accumulate your livelihood for your old age and then pay tax again when your heirs inherit the residue. Your heirs have to fill out two income tax forms; year to date of death and again on the estate.
Fortunately, because I’m the sole beneficiary, I didn’t have as much paperwork to fill out. Still, there was a lot of horsing around as I had to gather all the information for the accountant.
There are no “death duties” per se in Canada in that there is no outright tax on the total value of a deceased’s estate. However, all a person’s assets are deemed to have been disposed of immediately before death; even a modest stock portfolio can yield a surprising tax liability if the stocks have been held for a long time and have appreciated considerably. RRSP’s and RRIF’s are a particular tax hazard on death as the TOTAL VALUE of them becomes taxable income to the deceased. Things get really interesting when the beneficiary of an RRSP or RRIF is not the estate, as the company holding the account will hand the total amount to the beneficiary without worrying about the tax implications. This can leave the executor/executrix responsible for a large tax liability and no means to pay same. My advice to my senior clients now is to melt down any RRIF’s and transfer the money to maximize their TFSA’s or even to a non-registered account. The excess amount to take out? Depends on the individual’s tax situation, but better for Granny to lose some or all of the age amount over the next few years (that’s only about a tax saving of $1604.55 in Alberta in 2017) than die with substantial RRIF’s and have the final return show income up in the stratosphere; the age amount will be gone, OAS will be clawed back, and the final tax bill on those RRIF’s could well approach 45% – 50%.
Frances:
Don’t forget the government cash grab known as a probate fee. What I paid for that was more than what my father’s pickup truck was worth.

The “lazy turd” (someone called him that on another thread, and it is a good description) is back to water skiing in BC today, after his token laying of flowers on the Toronto terrorist attack memorial. I guess it is just “let someone else” deal with the business of the nation.
PM Surfer Twerp’s “is it over because I want to get back to playing” attitude reminds me of something that happened to me many years ago.
I was driving in a part of Saskatoon during the evening and I was coming up to a red light. I changed lanes, left enough room for other vehicles, and came to a stop. A split second later, I was tail-ended by an SUV driven by a young kid.
After examining the damage to my vehicle and exchanging the necessary information, one of the kids in the vehicle asked me: “Is this gonna take long? We have a dance to go to.”
What a wonderful attitude, eh? He caused several hundred dollars worth of damage to my car, it was clearly his fault (despite denials to the contrary, though the police backed me on that), and the biggest concern that he and his buddy might not be able to get to a dance on time. I don’t recall either of them even apologizing for what happened.
Later, the kid managed to fib his way out of it with the insurance company and I ended up paying the deductible costs for the repairs. I could have disputed it, but the costs of travellling to Saskatoon to deal with it in person were more than what I paid.

Peter Foster: Trans Mountain will prove Ottawa can’t run an oil company — again
Then again, do we need any more lessons in government incompetence? The federal Liberals’ announcement in May that they would buy Trans Mountain coincided with an auditor general’s report that Canada has a “broken government system.” Among the many other things it can’t do is build bridges (Champlain), or organize payroll systems (Phoenix).

If Trudeau’s climate policy seems absurd, that’s because it’s not actually about climate
It turns out that just as the budget doesn’t balance itself, the government’s green spending doesn’t pay for itself either. While Premier Doug Ford is sensibly axing Ontario’s climate-spending fund in an effort to drag public finances back in the right direction, the Trudeau Liberals are forging ahead with handouts to rent-seekers.

Of course not. It’s about subjugating Alberta and economically bludgeoning it into submission once and for all. Western Canadians are supposed to be the serfs of the eastern elite and this policy is to make sure we never forget it.

“From Solar Valley to Death Valley”
“It was to be Germany’s bright new high-tech future and show the world how to go green. That was the vision.”
But then came clash with harsh reality.
Within just a matter a few years low-cost solar cell imports from China flooded the markets, causing prices to plummet. Within just months Solar Valley was reduced to a heap of ruins.
Moreover, the exorbitantly high green energy feed-in tariffs rapidly caused electricity rates from consumers to skyrocket. The government was forced to act quickly to cut the feed-in rates, which made solar systems less attractive. The market found itself flooded by solar panels and German manufacturers collapsed.

Keystone XL’s New Path Gets Positive U.S. Environment Review
TransCanada Corp.’s proposed Keystone XL oil pipeline won a relatively positive review from the U.S. State Department, which found that the conduit’s approved route would have no significant environmental impacts.
The alternate route that Nebraska regulators approved for the line would have minor to moderate effects on three of the eight environmental categories the department assessed, with minor impacts on three others and a negligible effect on one, according to a review released Monday.

Varcoe: As Canada waits for pipelines, record volumes of oil move by rail
Yet, existing pipelines are already full.
Three new major pipeline developments — Enbridge’s Line 3 replacement project, the Trans Mountain expansion and Keystone XL — won’t be completed within the next year and still face some uncertainty.
That means a bigger role for rail in the months ahead.

We generally go shopping and for medical appointments to Saskatoon once a week and it seems that every time we go there is an oil train waiting on a passing siding ready to leave the city for points to the south-east somewhere.

“Canada has been rebuffed in recent attempts to engage on Nafta with U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer amid talks between the Trump administration and Mexico, according to three people with knowledge of the negotiations.
The Canadian negotiating team, led by Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland, has been told that Lighthizer is focusing on negotiations with Mexico and isn’t interested in engaging with Canada at the moment, according to the people, who asked not to be named discussing private conversations. The situation was first reported by the National Post newspaper.”
