Commenters have likely noticed a message that Captcha is being discontinued at the end of March. No new version is available, so this may interrupt normal service for a time while we come up with a solution.
As best as we can determine, that solution involves a transition to a new platform, along with archiving the old content. (The database has ballooned to 26,170 entries along with 784,454 comments.)
Which is a good thing. We’ve limped along on Movable Type for much longer than we thought we could, but it’s becoming suckier with every passing year. But I’ll update when I have more information, likely in a week or two.

Thanks Lance (as someone mentioned here yesterday).

What?
reCaptcha v2 is absolutely available: https://developers.google.com/recaptcha/docs/faq#what-happens-to-recaptcha-v1
If you don’t want to use a Google service because they’re evil, that’s fine, but “no new version is available” is incorrect.

The current version of Movable Type can absolutely handle a database of this size; if you don’t want to pay $500USD for the upgrade, that’s a fair decision, but I would bet a passing of the tip jar could raise that from the regulars in about twenty minutes.
Thanks Kate and Lance.
That reminds me…time to tip the jar.
Sounds like a good move. Only one small request… please, please, please implement a system that will allow us to go back and edit what we posted in comments.
What DaveK said, and thanks for the reminder Old Aquarian.
