Canada will squeeze even more flying time out of its aging CF-18s, keeping the jets operating for another 15 years.
There had been plans to take the jets out of service shortly after 2025.
But representatives from companies who took part in a Jan. 22 industry day outlining the Liberal government’s program to buy new fighter planes were told the RCAF will now keep the CF-18s operating until 2032.

The last time Liberals bought used military assets was in the 90s. They bought four submarines from Britain at a cost of $750 M. The estimated repair cost for these derelict British submarines was estimated at somewhere around $1. 5 B. The Liberal purchase was an unmitigated disaster for Canada. Here we go again.

Canada’s NATO obligations = 2% ($40 billion) of GDP to be spent on the military. Canada has been spending about 1/2 of that ($20 billion) for many years, no modern submarines, no modern ships, mediocre North West Passage capable ships while Russian sees the North Pole as possibly theirs with their 5/6? nuclear powered ice breakers, no carriers and no aircraft to put on carriers. Canada acts like the teenager that’s just moved out and doesn’t need to pay a mortgage while daddy America pays its rent. Dead beat NATO dad Canada.

Yes, we may already be there. Air Defenses are becoming exponentially more robust, much harder to knock out.
There will be times when we can’t count on the Americans crushing air defenses or creating safe corridors for us.
We have pushed our luck in the past – the Balkans – but not anymore, as of now, and AD is vastly improving.
That means no attack or close air support missions over hostile territory in support of our forces, which can now be conducted at high altitude, as B52s can and as CF35s will, at stealth, so lower and slower if need be.
That is now a suicide mission for the F18 (and B52) against any professional military forces with modern AD.
Make no mistake the CF35 is an air superiority aircraft with amazing multi mission capability, but attack choppers and Wild Weasels (F18 Growler) will take the fight to enemy air defenses.
Is the government proposing we use our F18s as air defense bait in collective security missions?
On any other mission, F18s/4th gen fighters will shot down at 60,000 feet no problem, missiles undetectable beyond visual range, with fatal consequences.
The F18 will soon, if not now be unable to operate in any modern environment or risk becoming an easy kill.
Why buy a Mustang, a great aircraft, over a Sabre? That is what the F35 haters are proposing. What a colossally bad idea.

The CF104 was used in an ill advised mission – that’s right, close air support – and its stubby little wings were very unforgiving.
That mission turned it into a widowmaker.
