The Critically Globally Warm Olympics should be for local residents ONLY. No one should jet to the Olympics. Not the officials, not the reporters, no one … except the athletes. And then ONLY the top 10 athletes in each sporting event. No Jihad Barbie doll fencing loser. No Jamaican bobsled team. If you arent in the top 10 athletes in your sport … then you’re already a LOSER. Stay HOME. Mother Earth cannot bear the burden of all the unnecessary Co2 choking the planet and melting the ice caps. The Olympic movement is very close to the UN IPCC … they lay in the same Marxist bed. So I expect the Olympic movement to respect the ‘ green’ movement of their Marxist brethren and curtail all their Olympic WASTE.
So, Nensharia favours a 2 week elitist blast, where Billions of taxpayer dollars are blown, for little long term benefit. Lesson learned, the 88 games were in Calgree!, and, well, its still Calgree.
But Nensharia doesn’t want to cough up a couple hundred million, for a new Flames arena, that has far more long term, ongoing benefits to the city, than any Olympics would.
Socialist math………
Nenshi-dude wants a new arena in Vic Park, just north of the “old Saddledome”.
The Flames org pooped in the sandbox.
The least “cost” option is to demo the “old Saddledome” for $12M Cdn. It’s only 30-something. New throwaway socialism.
Anywho by the time the city makes a decision the Flames will be in Seattle or Houston. The current owners are ready to sell out.
When was the last time someone at the Globe and Mail said anything good about Calgary?
I’m not promoting the Olympics being held in Calgary, but if the Globe and Mail come out strongly against it, I’d be convinced to at least consider the idea as being “good”.
The Grope and Flail works only for the Laurentian Elite and Ontario.
Calgary already spent 5 miles on a report.
Last week the IOC said they need another 2 from each bidder.
Total costs are usually lowballed in order to fool the proles. The final costs come in at 100’s over the estimate but by then then IOC boys have moved on and the host city is crippled by the debt. Witness Sochi and Brazil. It’s a criminal scam.
The Olympics are just another gravy train, an on-going world party just like the U. N. or E. U.
Unfortunately, if they happen to return to Canada, guess who’ll be paying for them?
The price tag won’t be cheap, by the way. Several years ago, I was flying to Vancouver and my seat mate was a contractor at the then upcoming Olympics in Whistler. The security arrangements alone would have been prohibitively expensive.
After going from critic to fan at Expo 86 I approached the Vancouver Olympics with more enthusiasm but not enough planning to volunteer, which i regret I did not, or apply for tickets. Still had a great time, met lots of people, experienced and witnessed a lot of proud Canadians and still often think of the sight of two young natives walking down Granville street singing Oh Canada. It was a good feeling, lots of legacy projects that we still admire and I think we did it right. I think Calgary and alberta could use a boost after the dark days of the NDP are over.
Jean Drapeau “The Olympics can no more lose money than a man can have a baby.”
Drapeau should go down as one of the great psychic seers of all time. Nowadays we have Olympics regularly losing money AND men giving birth.
Nenshi and the Calgary city council would love to have a shot at the graft the Olympics would provide.
They have already created the makings of a scandal by commissioning and spending millions on reports favourable to an Olympic bid and obscuring the reports that are not favourable.
Vancouver could arguably be the most successful Winter Olympics ever.
Calgary’s was very successful too. But that was a very different era.

We peasants are,as always, being sold a bill of goods on pro sports venues and “games”,whether Olympic or any other type. The games and pro sports are a massive boondoggle for the well connected, but they present a pretty face and lots of lovely emotions to placate the rubes, while they rob the treasury blind, again.
The people who benefit are the contractors, who are always good friends of the government that signs the cheques. There is of course, the benefit to the workers who build the venue, but after the circus ends, we’re stuck with huge bills we can’t afford and little used ski jumps and bobsled ovals, etc.
Yes,there are some “feel good” moments at every games, but spending billions so we can weep along with a figure skater who suffered a family tragedy is lunacy.
Politicians love to have a piece of the action, pose for photo-ops and have their name linked as part of their legacy, but they aren’t so adept at estimating the costs and plunging us further into debt.
We have a massive housing shortage, but no money to build cheap rental properties,or mental health facilities, but there’a always plenty to waste on multi-billion dollar exercise in feeling good for a week or two.3600 homeless in Vancouver alone, no money available to alleviate the situation, but plenty for another f***ing Olympic boondoggle, which always runs to about 140% of projected cost.
It’s a handout of taxpayers money to the rich. I’m disappointed so many conservatives still see hosting these financial debacles as something desirable.
And as for Calgary and the demand for a new arena, let the NHL owners of the Flames build their own goddamned arena, they ARE supposed to be capitalists, not communists,so why do they keep asking the taxpayers to pay for avenue so THEY can make big profits?
Calgary survived just fine without an NHL team, and if they decide to move to Houston, you can still watch your favorite “sports heroes” on TV,and the city of Calgary will carry on with a few hundred million more in their coffers.

Just another article on how the Olympics cost way more than they ever recover, but we ARE left with a good feeling and fond memories, which are priceless.
Oh, c’mon, the IOC accomplished so much for the average person in Rio….
In Rio de Janeiro, ‘Complete Vulnerability’ as Violence Surges

My favorite memory of the Calgary Olympics was standing about a block from home on Centre St N., with family and friends, as the torch procession passed by. Surely that memory is worth a few paltry 100’s of millions of taxpayer $$.
To me, the IOC represents everything I hate about corrupt, elitist international organizations.
in the last 100 years or so the olympics have been of no benefit what-so-ever.
Calgary 88 made money. We all know that Calgary whenever the fudge won’t.
The idiots in charge also decided sometime back that our Olympic mascots were too childish for our Welcome to Calgary signs.
Threaten the economy? It is such a small amount of spending that it will have zero effect on the economy. A few billion dollars over 10 years is nothing compared to Red Rachel borrowing $11 billion per year.
What the Olympics do for Canada, is bring to the attention of the rest of the world that Canada is here and we are suckers. Pack up your third world crap and bring the entire family over Ahmed, free stuff is only the beginning.
As for the Olympics, I’m of the attitude that it, the Olympic Organization, is in fact no different than the UN IPCC….Blood sucking parasites of the planets taxpayers.
I could care less…
A much more important story in NewHubNation was this one in the FP.

Olympics – Environmentalism….? its all thinly disguised marxism regardless.
Don’t get me wrong Don. My own preference is like yours, there shouldn’t be any expenditure, just pointing out the idiocy of Nensharia, but I’m talking to the choir.
As for housing shortages…….if our country wasn’t bringing in so many third works refugees from the scrap heap, we would have a far smaller problem to deal with. Instead, Selfie Socks and his immigrant minister want to further open up our country to the losers of the world, for more free welfare.
Where will they be housed? Crickets from Ottawa”…….
NewsHubNation is a CBC down stream location is my understanding. This is normally a pass-by click for me.
