  3. Obviously does not “lead” her staff in her department, they operate on their own & lead her around by the nose. She might be smart & well educated at the right schools & with the right subjects, but management material she is not. Never put there to be so in the first place.
    She is there for the paycheck & pension & to mouth the right words, scripted for her by others. No personal involvement whatsoever. Probably not “in” most of the time. Just another Sock Boy/Pretty Face. Period.
    We are paying this woman while she “networks” her next job/appointment on your dime.

    I mentioned on the comments at the CTV link that a person on a conservative blog ,which shall remain nameless, had re-nicknamed our Catherine “Climate Klaus Barbie”,but I doubt most readers there will recognize the name.

    I would agree, based on the text of her apology: “Clearly a mistake was made from my Dept twitter.”
    A better leader would have written: “A terrible mistake was made in issuing this tweet and, as Minister, I take full responsibility.” That done, the idiot staff who came up with this nonsense should then be appropriately dealt with.

    We should never, ever allow politicos to hoodwink us on the workings of democracy. One way they do this is by attempting to “professionalize” themselves and their “careers” in our eyes.
    When it comes to how someone becomes an MP, it doesn’t much matter whether they’re smarter than Einstein or only slightly sharper than a tree slug.
    You don’t become an MP through some masterly process of professional advancement; you become an MP by winning the vote in your riding.

    Given that the constituents of this riding are mostly .gov or acedeme, I’d venture to suggest they wuz robbed where it concerns competence, despite her loosely applied qualifications. Either that or they wanted her because she was what we call her: a Climate Barbie. Had to be if we compare her to Paul Dewar.
    These are unforced errors in my book. Stuff politicians get rotated on after a while. She’s brain dead politically speaking. Rebel should hound this one right out of office. Bring Sheila Gunn Reid to Ottawa just for that purpose. PPG are getting too many freebies on our dime, covering for her gaffes.

    I wouldn’t be too sure of that. The Liberals can be incredibly imperious and ruthless with their luckless minions (I’ve witnessed it myself). If a hapless no-account staffer can be forced to take the fall for an anointed party grandee, the Libs will do it in a flash.
    (I should state that, in my experience, all the parties can be almost shockingly bloody-minded in this regard. The NDP – that great friend of the ordinary working Joe – is often one of the worst offenders.)

    Very succinct. And pretty accurate too, I’d say.
    Perhaps the voters in the riding, desperate to herald in the Sunny Ways of The Dear Leader Apparent while vanquishing the evil Harperites, reasoned that the decidedly unshiny and unkempt Dewar belonged to the wrong party for leading them to the sunlit uplands? After all, the man looked like he couldn’t afford razor blades. And those dumpy clothes! Didn’t he know there was a Harry Rosen right inside the Rideau Centre?

    Perhaps there’s no system but when you chose you Cabinet Minsters because DIVERSITY then that “professional skill set” is drastically decreased.
    BTW. Apparently US Senator Kamala Harris, also praised Syria for signing the Paris Accord. She’s a front runner to run for President in 2020. So it seems this is a Progressive point of view not some crazy talk from a staffer.

  32. If I remember correctly McKenna beat out left wing NDP MP Paul Dewar for the Ottawa Center Riding in the 2015 election.
    While she was on the campaign trail, knocking on doors, she appealed to woman to vote for her “because I am a woman”…how sexest is that eh?

  33. I saw that ridiculous Syria-US juxtaposition on CBC at the gym. The US didn’t sign a meaningless piece of paper, but it’s been reducing CO2 emissions every year unlike everyone else.
    Words can’t describe how unremittingly stupid the CBC is. And completely obsessed with the US and Trump. If they had to abide by Canadian content rules for the news they would have to change 70% of their programming.

I remember one of the columnists commenting on going to a Liberal social function with all their new candidates. His comment was that they appeared to have no substance. Most seemed to be there to pad their resumes. All were books smart, most pretty attractive, but they did not have a good reason for going into politics. There were all Barbies and Kens. They are committed to nothing except climbing the career ladder.

    I’ll reiterate: she is NOT qualified on any level. This latest gaffe is just more proof.

    For the last time, I am not “going to bat for her”; I have merely pointed out the blazingly obvious: that in order to qualify as a cabinet minister, a person must a) be elected as an MP and b) be selected as a cabinet member by the PM.* You don’t have to like the choice of McKenna to accept that this is how our democracy works.
    If I am going to bat for anything, it’s our system of government.
    Indeed, that very same system offers us all the opportunity to get rid of McKenna: in the next election we can vote her party out of power and (if we’re in her riding) we can even vote her right out of office.
    * Technically, nothing stops a PM from selecting a senator either. Or, for that matter, an MP from the Opposition.

  40. Well, she was eligible to be selected for the Environment portfolio, but it is glaringly obvious that the main reason she was selected for the Cabinet post is because she is female. I believe that is the point being made. Even within the Liberal caucus there are more qualified individuals than McKenna. And it is ridiculous for her to urge people to vote for her because she is a woman, and then complain about sexism.

  42. No reason to distance oneself from Syria’s contribution to the Paris accord. That is what the game is isn’t it? Are we now making political judgments about the people who sign on? I don’t think that is appropriate. I am pretty sure Assad is just as concerned as others about “saving the planet”.

    The US system does not weigh itself down with such nonsense. The ‘Cabinet’ is outside the congress. Presumably this allows for people of high qualification.

McKenna is not qualified for her position, nor is Monsef, nor is Morneau, nor is Freeland, nor is Trudeau himself. These people are all “eligible” for an appointment to Cabinet as they got elected, but none are truly qualified for the position they hold.
