Yeah, funny thing about six day blackouts that impact life and threaten manufacturing plants. People decide the enviro-whackos are, well, whackos.

Unlike coal and gas, which can be called upon when needed to meet varying demand, wind and solar power breed vulnerability because they can’t be dispatched — they produce if and when the wind blows and the sun shines.
Solar and wind power cannot be used for the masses. It can only work for individuals preferrably in the country out of reach of the cities micro-management of what you can and can’t do and “smart” meters.
You then decide how big your system is or isn’t and whether it can support your needs. You decide how you live.

This will be an important hurdle for wind and solar. I predict that they can only compete with fossil fuels and other conventional baseload and peaking generation when the deck is stacked in RE’s favor – artificially increasing the cost of FF with taxes and fees, not making RE sources add in the cost of backup power, forcing utilities to use RE first, paying RE to not produce power, etc. I read an article that calls wind and solar part time power but it’s closer to casual employment. Conventional power generation is full time power production.
If power contract were structured so that electrical generation had to guarantee production and dispatchable power then wind and solar would fail. Only hydro and possibly biofuel would remain. For example, if all electricity generators had to guarantee that they could provide the power they promised 80% of the time or pay a penalty then the cost of wind and solar would go up dramatically. Make the capacity factor a priority. If a wind and solar company has bid to provide the grid with 100MW of power but they can only count on actually producing 30% installed capacity then they’d either have to install 3x as many wind towers or solar panels (still no guarantee) or build a reliable backup generator or storage system. Storage systems sound great but they still rely on adequate wind and solar generation which goes back to having to build more installed capacity. Nuclear, coal, natgas and hydro could just build their plant knowing that they can easily meet the contracted amount because nature has minimal affect on their regular day to day operations.

The claim that renewables have become much more affordable absolutely should be treated seriously. Bravo to Aussieland for taking note to Big Green’s new rhetoric in the renewable sale’s pitch. Making wind and solar compete, non-subsidized, in the open market free of carbon tax burden and CO2 regulation is the fair and honest way to make the snake oil wind and sun salesmen put up or shut up. They can try to prove common sense, engineering science and commercial accounting wrong with a couple of years of cheap reliable power supply results as opposed to the overflowing litter box filled with unrequited promises. Go ahead Greenies spend your own money and show us. I dare you. What’s the matter? Have to use the litter box again?

I saw it real well-put on one website, to the tune of – making renewable energy sources, windmills and solar panels, is pretty energy-intensive. So if renewables were REALLY competitive with fossil-fuelled power, they’d be using renewable energy to make renewables.
How’d all those crickets get in… ?
Until there is grid-scale cost-effective electrical energy storage wind and solar are not viable.
An order of magnitude improvement is in energy density relative to current generation Li-ion technology and needs to be scalable with existing or anticipated manufacturing techniques.
Someone will probably crack this code and if/when they go I would go long but that time hasn’t come yet.

I drove past the wind farm at Trochu, Alberta on Oct. 4. Less than half of them were turning. The rest were trashed, most of them with blades missing, either 1, 2 or 3 of them gone, damage from the blizzard 2 days earlier.
