Trump administration punishes Bombardier with another import duty
More, please, Mr. President. I hear dairy, poultry, and the maple syrup markets utilize predatory practices that screw Americans, too.
The take at Zerohedge via Adrian.
Mr. President, if you need to say something to PM LookAtMySocks, just say, “It’s a enormous victory for the Mayors and I. Very proud.” Trust me, they’ll get the ‘joke’.
Flashback to when Fort Mac was rebuilding.
The Canada Border Services Agency imposed preliminary tariffs last Tuesday on U.S. gypsum board imported into Canada for use in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and the Yukon and Northwest Territories.
Tariffs that hurt western home-builders and buyers.
How’s it feel now, Ottawa, eh?

“…a long-running feud between Boeing and Bombardier; Boeing accused its rival in April of benefiting from anticompetitive government subsidies.”
So this whore walks into this pub, and she says to this slut sitting at the bar….”
The two US Pratt engines account for a third the price. Throw in tires, landing gear, avionics and half or more is US.
50% of Americans registered to vote don’t vote at all. Is it the same in Canada?
Democracy is not a spectator sport.
Awesome…
Now the Liberals can blame Trump when they give Bombardier the next few billions in handouts.
Anyways, why don’t they just streamline the graft and impose a Bombardier tax on Canadians?
Sept. 20: Bombardier workers in Toronto walk off the job to attend a rally to support company’s battle against Boeing.
The perfect exemplar of the toxic socialist Canadian mindset and the primary reason why Canada is a third rate welfare State on the road to Venezuelan territory.
Canada is not a democracy. It is a Constitutional Monarchy. Canada practices very few democratic principles. The Ruling Class (Privy Council) runs your country and appoints all of the political executives. You are merely a subject of a semi-retarded foreign monarch and do not even have the status of a citizen of an independent country
My feeling is that Bombardier has become a Liberal subsidized entity, as compared to government subsidized. Likely involves fees being paid to Liberal facilitators.
Boeing gets lots of US government contracts, but so do Musk and the Russians. If Trudeau could negotiate like Trump, he would have convinced the Americans to buy Bombardier products.
Someone ought to ask why those 4000 jobs that are in Ireland are not in Canada might it be due to taxation?
So Bombardier is under the gun. So typical of the Canadian mindset that the questioning of the obvious subsidies that Bomber has received is not extended to the rest of eastern Canadian manufacturing. The grandest government sponsored ‘industrialization’ project in Canadian history which gained real momentum with AutoPact has/is crumbling. Nope, not a word of this in our trusty CBC Nightly News! Oh, I forgot they get +$1 Billion of tax payer money each year as well. Any real review of this failure incriminates decades of politicians and mandarins.
There is no industrial engine in Canada. Those companies who actually a business are quickly setting up in the USA to ensure survival. USA Hedge funds have been shorting ‘Canada’ for years now as they anticipate the inevitable collapse.
Canada as we know it will not survive this anticipated collapse. The West will leave as the full extent of eastern exploitation becomes personal to citizens. The West is fundamentally a resource economy which has to attract capital. Ottawa has ensured that capital will not find a ROI in the West. The eastern pretense of 1st world economy will explode. As much as a criticize the failures of the Harper governments at least Harper was trying to diversify and develop Canadian industry.
Somehow I get the feeling it won’t matter what the “ruling” comes back as. Since the US is no longer a major exporting nation, they kind of hold Canada and China over a barrel. Trump could simply tell the WTO to go pound sand. Trump’s campaign promised to reverse the trade imbalances. This is how you do it…
Sorry, JQC-WAYOT.
It is incorrect to say constiutional monarchies are not democracies. As a fer-instance, consider that post-Confederation Canada (in 150 years) has booted eight administrations out with the constitutional tools at hand (non-confidence or dismissal) while the republic to the south has (in 241 years) booted exactly one (Nixon) who resigned before being impeached.
As for independence, the pre-Confederation colonies had full internal self-government from about 1841 onward (except for Newfoundland’s stretch of Commission government pre-union), and could have declared complete independence at any time.
The UK has a television tax, I guess Canada maybe should have a Bombardier tax. How are we going to out Maduro Venezuela, without more government? We are losing the race to the bottom!
Those 4000 jobs are in Ireland because they are Short Brothers Aviation, which used to be an independent company, then they were part of British Aerospace, then they were bought by Bombardier. It is a separate company that is a wholly owned subsidiary or Bombardier, AFAIK.
Note also they have never impeached a Supreme Court justice. The freedom destroying ruling that have come from some of them (looking at apex anti-American Ruth Bader Ginsberg), and they just finish their lifetime appointments.
If tools exist, but those tools are never used or even talked about, do you really have them?
Lance, well said. This sordid Canadian government subsidization of Bombardier reminds me of the F18 maintenance contract that the Quebec first politician so-called conservative Mulroney gave to a firm in Quebec rather than the low bidder in Winnipeg.
Canadian Observer and John Q. Citizen, exactly.
It has been rather obvious as of late that the Laurentian Elite (Liberals) run this country for the benefit of the Laurentian Elite. Think pipelines and the deindustrialization of Ontario. Mo Strong’s dreams are coming true.
Deliberately picking fights with the US and adding Social Justice claptrap to the NAFTA negotiations will not end well.
But look at my socks and hair everyone? We now have business minded adults running the American economy for the most part, the poopsie PM that Toronto is so enthralled with, is the puppet that remotely, Donald has on the string with a tin cup. Trump knows who pulls the puppets strings, and monetarily, Donald indirectly is just starting to show us, in western Canada, that if we don’t want a Hugo future, we better start to get things in place.
Re: the Drywall tariff : “The Canada Border Services Agency imposed preliminary tariffs last Tuesday on U.S. gypsum board imported into Canada for use in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and the Yukon and Northwest Territories.”
Now, if only the CBSA will apply the same tariff to imported crude oil for use in Ontario, Quebec and Atlantic Canada.
Miss Prime Minister Harper yet?
Non of these “issues” even hit the radar during his years as PM.
We’re right back at it!
“We’re right back at it!” Totally Agree!
“it!” is the socialist mantra, that being if it ain’t broke, break IT!
You could give a socialist a perfectly functioning country with no crime, no homeless, no perils at all. Within a year you would see the effect of “it!”
“it!” is what they do, it is ALL they do! Socialists will never, ever actually fix a problem. They never, ever want to solve a problem.
Lotsa fodder for 2019 fed election.
Lotsa fodder for 2019 fed election.
It’ll all be forgotten by the time the election’s called. The average voter has a memory of about 6 weeks and I’m sure that the Liberals are well aware of that.
With respect to the drywall tariff, is it coincidence that the market for that same drywall was western Canada?
“Canada is not a democracy. It is a Constitutional Monarchy.”
Read something. Read anything. That is not all that swift a comment. Obviously you missed that the only significant power the monarch or his stand-in has is appointing the prime minister and there are strict rules involving that. Additionally, in Canada, the stand-in is chosen by an elected PM.
That drywall is made in China, get the picture?
When our son had his garage and basement dry walled, the contractor had a separate line on his bill for the extra cost. He called it the Trudeau extra screwing tax.
There was virtually no media coverage about this issue anywhere in Canada. I’m surprised you found that article.
Bombardier must accept the fact Canada is in a Post-National State or does Post-Nationalism
not apply to certain groups, parties or Provinces.
Forgot to spell it out: quality US made drywall=tariff, cheap, lousy, badly made drywall made in China imported, all the way across the Pacific. Now go build “new” houses with it, eh sucker western Canucks.
The factory is probably owned by the PLA or an SOE & the owners launder their money back to Canada & buy properties in Vancouver, or Trawnna, through the BC Lotteries Commission’s casinos.
https://calvinayre.com/2017/09/28/casino/feds-reviewing-bclc-money-laundering/
What an incredibly stupid, asinine post. These tariffs are an assault on American consumers by an idiotic president who doesn’t understand how trade works (there is no such thing as trade ‘imbalances’). Trump might just Smoot-Hawley us into another crisis. Bombardier is subsidized and that’s wrong, but Boeing is every bit the subsidy whore. Google ‘Ex-Im Bank’.
Talk about the law of unintended consequences. Lieberals and Greentards alike must be in a catatonic state today. Cancellation of the Energy East pipel8ne is a YUGE WIN FOR TRUMP!
https://reportca.net/2017/10/energy-east-cancellation-a-huge-win-for-trump-says-former-ambassador/
and that is why, in any separation of western Canada / Saskatchewan posting here at SDA… there’s going to be almost as many opinions on how the new country of Saskatchewan or Canada West will govern itself.
I want nothing to do with a foreign monarch in Canada, why would I want that same millstone as a citizen of Canada West? I’m certain she’s a lovely old gal, but she’s not “my queen” and her son is not representative of anything I believe in.
I keep hearing people say Boeing does not make jets the same size as the Bombardier C series but that is FALSE.
or say that the C series is a unique airplane but that too is completely false.
Boeing’s 737Max is the same size as the C series ( a couple feet of difference in lenght which is irrelevant ) ,
can carry the same number of passengers ( around 130 if memory serves)
flies at the same speed ( about .7 mach )
…they say the C series is quieter but the 737MAx was recently improved in 2017 and is quieter ( even if the C series is quieter, big freakin deal ! )
the C series can fly about 1500 miles before needing refueling while the 737max can fly over 3000 miles which makes it more interesting.
initially both the 737max and the C series were supposed to sell for about 75-80 million $ …thus they are similar in that way as well ( but Bombardier sold some for about 20 M )
Bombardier’s C series is not a different and unique jet nor is it in a niche market where Beoing is not, that is COMPLETELY FALSE.
If Boeing did not have jets in the same category as the C series why would they be complaining? why would Trump be so angry???
Bombardier and the main stream media are LYING trhough their teeth when they say Boeing does not have jets in the same category as the C series.
The planes are half manufactured in the US. Next step for Bombardier is to assemble them in the US to beat the tariff and piss off Boeing.
“Next step for Bombardier is to assemble them in the US to beat the tariff and piss off Boeing.”
Would that not be a major win by Trump?
It is sad to watch the Libtards come up against a negotiator who lives in the real world.
Sad for my financial interests here in Canada, but priceless comedy as political theatre.
CBC will still be insisting; “Trump is a moron” when the last business ships out of eastern Canada.
And I expect our Eastern Comrades will still continue to blame the Yanks for their own inadequacies as they eat each other.
This current Canadian Government is the best case for the dissolution of Canada in decades, we do not need to separate, it is falling apart on its own.
Aside from MY President’s superior trade negotiating skills … I get the sense that MY President is NEVER going stop punishing PM-socks for REWARDing America’s Muslim Enemy Combatant. The Punishment is set to continue for 7-more lonnnnng years. While I feel sorry for my Canadian friends … it may all work out for the best in the long run.
Bombardier has 4000 employees in N.Ireland because it helps get them into the European Market. Whoever they bought there was probably the cheapest to acquire and/or most subsidized by their national government (U.K.) in all of the E.C.
The story I heard was that Short Brothers was in financial trouble–close to going belly up, actually–and was, therefore, an easy acquisition by Bombardier.
Not sure of the numbers in the last election but I think about 46 % of eligible voters actually voted.
“50% of Americans registered to vote don’t vote at all. Is it the same in Canada?”
Registered voters who do not vote are sending a “come hither” invitation to those who have the guts to win by speaking to the issues that would capture their vote and WIN against those who ignore those issues.
All a candidate has to do is graze where the grass is…and WIN!
The whole thing is about price fixing – taking advantage of Fort Mc. The complaint was made by a company in Ontario who complained their SISTER company in Florida was dumping. Surprised Insurance companies didn’t put up a fight.
http://business.financialpost.com/opinion/trevor-tombe-fort-mac-rebuilders-getting-stung-by-harmful-costly-and-pointless-anti-dumping-rules
Both of you are correct. I am certain that Bombardier also gets lots of love from the British government. Is the familly the Canadian ELon Musk?
