Prairie farmers have shown little support for federal Liberals since the government of Pierre Trudeau and now Justin is providing a whole new generation of farmers with reasons to seethe.
I think farmers would be more than happy to support good policy, it just so happens that it’s usually crap that comes out of Liberal mouths.

Not just farmers hate LIEberals…………………
Exactly!
Since the 1960s the federal Liberals have only worked for Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver and milked the rest of the country.
Farmers have in general been beneficiaries of vast subsidies from the government. Also, supply management has been milking Canada even more so.
Everyone has seen this CBC headline.

Not true that Brad Wall Pitts the West against Ottawa.
We’ve hated them since 1968 when Pierre Trudeau got elected.
When PET took office, a lot of people in the west, including me, had serious misgivings. We were derided by his fans, accused of being closed-minded because he was young (compared to Pearson and Diefenbaker, maybe) and hip.
Gradually, over the years, the disillusionment with him and his bogus policies took over. Nowadays, the number of people of my generation (I’m in my 60s now) who speak well of him, and with whom I’ve personally had dealings with, I can count off on one hand.
How does the saying go again? “Ve get too soon oldt undt too late schmart.”
Unfortunately, when it comes to Canadian politics, it seems that each generation in this country has to learn that needlessly painful lesson all over again.
Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver
You might also include Quebec City and, possibly, Victoria in that list as well.
The cities are either voting Lib or for their ENDP cousins. Both end up being regressive, dragging this country towards Venezuela.
And UnJohn speaks from the bowels. He gives himself away on this topic.
Dairy farmers are the supply management problem in this country, along no with the poultry industry. Mostly in Quebec, the CPC was afraid of offending the industry, and never expect the Libs to be doing anyth8ng about it. They would rather tax them and confiscate earnings
How do these idiots get elected if everybody hates them?
I can tell you conservatives are conservatives as long as their money train keeps moving in the right direction seen it a thousand times ….totally fake conservatives farmers have not received large subsidies ….if you mean crop insurance or the wheat board then sure but farmers don’t get farmers welfare unme.
Something’s you say I agree with but most are empty headed liberal talking points how you call yourself a libertarian or conservative is beyond me.
a small segment of farmers is protected by government policies, the vast majority are subject to classical dangers, ie. weather, prices, government “help”, etc.
Farms and farmers should not receive any different treatment than any other business. Much of supply management evolved from an inability of farmers to borrow money as lenders saw the risk as to high. Yes it put capital into this industry. At what price? Never a discussion on a national level. As one who supplied many dairies I saw the full gamut of operations. Some who should have failed due to incompetence survived because of government subsidy.
As then the Liebels are picking their favorites to ‘help out’ under the new tax regime. People who have planned their lives and who have assets to retire on will now see a very calculated effort to ‘rob’ them of those assets by taxation. Breaking this social contract will led to what?
Lance is right. The Harper government was the first and only during my farming career that actually worked for the farmer.
Supply management is basically a government sanctioned cartel for the various products. It needs to go as no young or aspiring farmer can get into any of the supply managed industries as startups. The quota purchase system just means that the farms get bigger and bigger.
As far as subsidies are concerned, the federal and provincial governments still do contribute towards the overall crop insurance fund. The farmer contributes various levels of premiums.
The main inequity that still exists is that the farmer still pays all the accumulated freight on business and personal purchases he makes, just like the rest of society. For example, you pay the freight on the iron ore going to the steel maker, the freight from the steel maker to the auto manufacturer, and then to the auto dealer. However, where the difference comes in is that the farmer also pays the freight to ship his grain products to the cereal maker and the cereal consumer then pays the freight from the cereal maker to the retail store.
“if you mean crop insurance or the wheat board then sure but farmers don’t get farmers welfare unme”
Oh please. Crop insurance is just the tip of the non-supply management iceberg. There’s also Farm Credit Canada, ethanol mandates and subsidies, etc. Farmers by and large have always been the most entitled a-holes in North America. They spawned Praire Socialism which later morphed into progressivism.
