That our taxpayers in Saskatchewan and Alberta will continue to send, without question, about $2.5 billion in equalization payments to help support Quebec that receives $11 billion in equalization per year and $1.4 billion to Ontario. All of this despite the fact that low energy prices have resulted in job losses and lower revenues for the last 4 years.
Something needs to change. For the west to continue on like this in our federal system is the equivalent of having Stockholm syndrome.

  5. Probably the greatest reason for the failure of Energy East was the failure to budget for enough brown envelopes stuffed with cash for the various liarberal politicians in Quebec (most notably the greasy slug Denis Coderre)

  7. 400,000 bbl of oil a day are imported into Eastern Canada from places like Saudi Arabia and Venezuela…that could have easily been replaced by Canadian oil if there was only a pipeline. By the way Canadian crude is sold at a discount on the market because of lack of pipelines, so that oil would be $10-15 bbl cheaper then the current imports.

  18. Despite the news, TransCanada’s stock is up more than $0.25 right now after dipping sharply earlier. My guess is that investors have long factored the inevitability of the cancellation into the price and want to get on with business.

    Anyway, by any sensible logic, the pipeline was a no brainer, as the common expression says.
    The handlers had to devise a scheme where their puppet had to publicly agree to the pipeline. The actual plan was always against it. For the airhead to appear to be safe, the pipeline had to be killed by other means.
    Aha, success.
    Free enterprise, however entangled with the government has run out of options and refused to throw any more of their money into the government money black hole.
    The pipeline will be built one day in distant future.
    Even the socialists/fascists can’t stop it.
    It is all a matter of time.

    Absolutely what I am hearing from businessmen in Calgary when they go overseas looking for cash. No one is interested. Not because they don’t like Canadian companies and assets – because they don’t trust the political environment.
    The junior oil and gas sector in AB is on its knees and the NDP government is kicking it in the ribs. Almost all the big internationals have effectively pulled out of the country. The banks are hesitant to lend and the equity investors only want to pile money into about 5 companies.
    Meanwhile, in AB, the government is busy running a farce of a bid process for renewable projects that will mostly benefit European and Asian companies.
    Our political class is awful.

  21. Canada has always been a loosely bonded un-natural economic region. We are constantly reminded that the flow of goods and services from West to East is unwelcome (cash only) and Quebec might just as well be a foreign and hostile nation largely dependent on “foreign aid” from the ROC. Like a large Indian Reserve, it exists as a linguistic ghetto within the nation of Canada solely because of successfully shaking-down the ROC. The GTA, which is the de facto political capital is a morass of progressive narcissism. The Left Coast is now under the rule of green theology and treasury looters (much like the ROC).
    Optimizing revenue from Canada’s most important natural economic advantage will likely depend on receding Sea Ice freeing up the Hudson Bay to tanker traffic as the political climate on two of its coasts are currently toxic to any growth. Oh well, let’s just continue subsidizing US refineries…. it’s the Canadian way (intellectually matching our political class).

  23. I wonder if government future plans for electric cars might play into their erecting road blocks on Energy East. This may not seem likely at this point, but those electric cars are emerging quickly and even GM will offer a number of models by 2023. Given that pipeline construction would take a while, if even 25% of the population are driving electric cars by 2025, maybe the pipeline would soon become redundant. Now the company would be aware of how practical the economics are, but the government may have been motivated by wanting to discourage development of oil markets to make way for electric cars. Why would the government care? Well, we all know they make noises about CO2, and we all know (even they know) that is just a ruse. I think the end goal is to have government control of energy, and electric energy will be the currency. They have decided.

    Over the years, I’ve concluded that the memory of the average voter is no more than 6 weeks. By the end of the year, this matter will be completely forgotten, replaced by something else, a different sensation-du-jour.
    Just watch: in 2 years time, wee Juthtin will pull a miraculous rabbit out of a hat (and it won’t matter what it is or how he does it), most of the electorate will go “Oooh! Aaah!” and he’ll be a shoe-in for yet another majority. It is a wonderful thing to clear cut Canadian forests, grind the beautiful trees into little pellets, truck those chips to the East coast of Canada, ship those chips across the Atlantic Ocean so that Britain can BURN those chips to generate electricity. All because “that” is “carbon neutral” … or some such nonsense.
    The Eco-leftists who have dominion over the people of Canada are systematically RUINING, nay RAPING! the environment with their “carbon neutral” nonsense and “free” wind energy towers.     And what happens if there is a regime change in Saudi Arabia like the one in Iran?
    Would that put a restriction on the flow of oil coming in to those East coast refineries?

    There is a war on right now on who gets to supply the central/east with nat gas…..Yankee nat gas or western gas. Who’s gonna win? The Yanks, ’cause they are closer & can discount their gas accordingly, while charging their own more.
    The west’s beef is with BC. I already posted on this blog how to get stuff around BC, rather than shipping through Rupert or Vancouver.
    Valdez AK. The sands are pretty much almost there, a pipeline already exists up the old Alaska Hwy, so re-route around BC proper & make a deal with Alaska. Rail, too. If it can be built to Churchill it can be built to Valdez. Of course that wil entail separating & blocking east-west rail, which would be fun.
    As for Quebec being dropped from Confed, I’m not so sure I want to deal with Ontario on “national policy” with Quebec gone. It would be Ontario, Ontario, Ontario…first, second & last before anyone else.
