The BP Statistical Review of World Energy was published last week updating global oil, gas, coal and nuclear production and consumption etc to 2016. Great graphs! It appears that World oil demand & production (adjusted for biofuel & processing) have been largely in balance, graph-wise. There’s an estimate I’ve seen from about a year ago that shows total stockpiled oil (strategic & commercial) at 5.7 billion barrels. That’s equivalent to roughly 2 months of the World demand which is nearing 100 million barrels per day. It shows to me that we’re not at peak oil – that investment can still grow supply further and that demand is by and large growing at ~2 million barrels per year. I believe the extreme lack of new oil reserve booking over the last couple of years (2016 had the lowest new exploration oil reserve add in over 60 years!) is going to catch up in the near mid-term (by 2020). It will be good news for defined unconventional plays in Canada so long as the playing field can be flattened to match our American competition.

Be sure to remember that when Al Gore and Gov. Brown praise China’s … “commitment to renewables” … without ever mentioning China’s damming of “Wild” rivers and “flooding” sensitive archeological sites … they are LYING to you … by omission.
The China coal stats are truly amazing, more so because ALL the production is from underground mines. Undergound mining is a pig. A big question is whether China’s reduced coal ouput is part of a climate change startegy to save the world, or whether it is down to the effort involved digging coal from thinner seams longer distances away from the mine shaft.
