Bumped for update:
France could face its own ‘Frexit’ in the future after far-right leader Marine Le Pen and independent centrist Emmanuel Macron beat the two main parties to go head to head in the upcoming presidential elections.
With 34 percent of the vote counted, France’s Interior Ministry says that far-right presidential candidate Marine Le Pen is leading with 24.6 percent of the vote followed by centrist Emmanuel Macron with 21.9 percent.
In France the percentage of such dead end jobs is at 40%. An entire generation of Europeans is facing economic stagnation and internal cultural exile in their own countries. That is surely explosive and would normally lead obviously to what Spengler calls an extraordinarily dangerous French moment. What is truly scandalous is how long it has taken to recognize the smash. The crises of globalization is only belatedly being acknowledged after years of denial by the mainstream press. A Narrative that stubbornly characterized Brexit as an irrational aberration and Trump as joint product of Russian hacking and bigotry may now reluctantly face the fact that a genuine challenge to the world order now exists.

Coming on the rise of authoritarianism in Turkey, a victory by Jean-Luc Mélenchon or Marine Le Pen would leave the European project is dead in the water. The first piece of baggage they are likely to pitch overboard to lighten ship would be the Euro. CNN reports that while “the threat to the euro is most acute in France … it’s now under threat from politicians on both the left and right who want to bring the lira, drachma, peseta and French franc out of retirement.” Many southern European economists can see no way out of the prison of flyover country and catastrophic youth unemployment without the right to print their own currencies.
The center may hold in France but it is unlikely to hold for long. The long and agonized effort rearguard effort to explain away the challenge posed by Brexit, Trumpism and now France as just the result of yahoos hearing themselves hog calling have been one futile exercise in self delusion. There’s a hole in the bottom of the Titanic and the water has reached F Deck and now gurgling up the staircase. It’s time for the passengers in first class to seriously consider they may actually actually drown before the night is out. Sneering comedy skits on the Daily Show, Full Frontal, and Last Week Tonight won’t cut it any more.
French Presidential polls are open, and so is your open thread.

“Sneering comedy skits on the Daily Show, Full Frontal, and Last Week Tonight won’t cut it any more.”
Amen to that.
We all tried the economics of bringing in brown people to undercut the wages of native born citizens. It has failed. Unless our children are part of the elite, they are poorer for the experiment. In oil country ten years ago, my then 14 year old daughter was offered a job every time she went into a restaurant. A few years later a white kid simply couldn’t get a job because every restaurant in town hired only Filipinos. To do so they all had to lie about the hundreds of applications they received from Canadians but lie they did.
The new slave labour of the 21st century creating a new coloured underclass.
While there are many sentiments I share with this article, I don’t see a real leader emerge from the French elections. All of the candidates are lacking the qualities that make real leaders. Nothing will change regardless of who wins. And speaking of THE WHO:
“Meet the new boss
Same as the old boss”
…. the synthetic centrist Emmanuel Macron ….
Most excellent characterization, will be using it much.
I for one hope the French people choose the ‘right’ form of populism rather than the left.
“a victory by Jean-Luc Mélenchon or Marine Le Pen would leave the European project is dead in the water.”
Amen to that.
What a great place to try out revolution against the elite
Does the “right” actually exist in France? Le Pen is described in this article as “far right” supposedly because of her immigration sensibilities but on the economy she is typically socialist. Fascism and socialism are easily conflated but in the case of France, they seem to be one and the same. The French welfare state disincentivises wage rates dropping to levels commensurate to the levels resulting from suicidal mass immigration while the same leviathan state protects an upper class from job and wage competition and kills class mobility. Liberty doesn’t seem to be an option, leaving the future direction to be one of statism, cultural degradation and increasing civil unrest.

“What a great place to try out revolution against the elite”
The elite just hop on planes and fly out of harms way these days. No borders, no passports, no tax’s etcetera……….
What France needs is a good Civil War to make things right, like Serbia had but without the Clintons. Civil War is coming to some European countries, hopefully they’ll be enough anarchy to wake up North American’s before we get there ourselves.
“A Narrative that stubbornly characterized Brexit as an irrational aberration and Trump as joint product of Russian hacking and bigotry may now reluctantly face the fact that a genuine challenge to the world order now exists.”
I take serious issue with that statement.
I keep witnessing leftards sinking even deeper into their partisan delusions, they are in no way ready for any kind of “awakening” to reality. MSNBC ran a scroll just yesterday during Madcow’s segment putting the Venezuelan riots squarely on Trump’s shoulders.
Nope, the entrenched left’s jihad against conservatism will continue uninterrupted. Reality be damned.
Having been to France only once(1070), I came away not that impressed with the people. Very arrogant much like Quebecers. All the same I thought Frenchmen to be introverted and not that interested in the rest of the world. Needless to say I am surprised they have so willingly turned their country over to outsiders.
What is happening in France will eventually come to Canada. The purpose of immigration is to provide an opportunity for people to come and integrate into a society which already has an identity. No doubt that with time they can influence how that society evolves. The issue is always how many can come and the geographic sourcing of origin. To many of one origin can overwhelm the ability to integrate.
It won’t be Macron

They have a vote compass from the linked story. https://votecompass.france24.com/president/home
I tried it. France is screwed no matter what. My results show me farther right and more conservative than any of the candidates running and I would consider myself politically, middle of the pack with the crowd here.
If anything, Canada needs about a million more Catholic Philippinos – and a moratorium on immigration from the middle East.
The desperately hoped for assimilation when immigration is encouraged has been perhaps mortally wounded by the World Wide Web. Historically, immigrants had little or much delayed contact with the home country and had little choice but to cooperate with their neighbors. Nowadays, not so much.
I tried the link and unsurprisingly came out furthest to the right on the economy and neutral on the social axis. Fillion was the closest candidate and considered right wing (centrist by North American standards).
I lived in Calgary from 2002 to 2014. The reason restaurants hired Phillipinos (sp?) is that they show up for work on time, have a great attitude and actually “do the work” for which they were hired. Because of their work ethic, they quickly raise to store manager level. As well, the Canadian Health System would collapse without all the Phillipino caregivers and nurses.
The mentally ill Liberal left would rather guest host Idi Amin than Mother Teresa in their spare bedrooms because he had darker skin, and she had more “white privilege”.
Anything that leaves the European project dead in the water can’t be all bad.

how long does the lookout have to be screaming, “ICEBERG!!!”…
before somebody grabs the tiller?

An RN I know here admits 1. that she feels threatened by the competition from immigrants from the Phillipines and 2. that when she gets into work and finds the shift stacked with them she is relieved because she know the work will get done, properly and without complaints.
Dittos here. I would rather see Filipino immigrants any day over ME Muslims.
Thank you for the vote compass survey. Very interesting and surprising. Like you, I was more “conservative” than most candidates.

Yup me too.
Results were 61% Fillon, then 59% Le Pen….Closer to Le Pen Socially, and Fillon Economically.
Only Le Pen is anti-EUSSR. The others, whatever they say, are pro establishment.
UnoMe >
“Immigration is the future…”
Actually poverty, social unrest, and civil wars are the future – deal with it.
Relax folks. The cheese eating surrender monkeys arn’t going to do anything to upset the EU gravy train. It’s going to take more than an election to bring these people to their senses.
And cheap air travel
Macron & Le Pen into second round.
Macron is a randy travis type. Neither left or right/ gay or straight. Pick one or two. A fwench phoney in all aspects of his life. Perfect EU material.
“If anything, Canada needs about a million more Catholic Philippinos – and a moratorium on immigration from the middle East.”
I agree with the first half of your statement wholeheartedly but beg to differ somewhat on the second half.
I think Canada should cheerfully accept all Maronite, Coptic, Syriac and Chaldean Christians from the Middle East.
I agree, Filipinos are much better ‘brown people’ than the ones who were already here and they strongly support Canadian values while integrating into communities.
Future immigration from the MidEast should only allow those who are persecuted by muslimes.
Yeah, similar results for me; far right for France. A vote compass for Canada designates me as a right-centrist.
Canada needs to develop the unemployed and working talent it already has, along with streamlining existing industry’s. Starting with the Free Nations People.
There are easily a million bloated Government bureaucratic positions aka government funded working/ welfare positions that can be trimmed into viable private sector producers.
We can worry about feeding the worlds illiterate breeders another day. There will always be more, and more, and more of them available if ever needed.
62% Fillon, 55% Dupont-Aignan, 53% Le Pen here. I was quite surprised.
“There are easily a million bloated Government bureaucratic positions aka government funded working/ welfare positions that can be trimmed into viable private sector producers”. Knight99
All those immigrants provide work for all those Gov’t Workers…It is the Government workers that need a reason to exist…ALL GONE
hey Unome, you’re wrong. You want evidence that immigrants are stealing jobs? How about a federally funded program that trains and places immigrants in jobs for less than scale wage? Here ya go: https://www.ccisab.ca/professionals-job-seekers/4th-class-power-engineering-training-program.html They brag about a 100% job placement rate in an industry that’s laid off thousands in the past 2 years. Free textbooks, free tuition and guaranteed work, pretty sweet deal for Justin’s people.
I am much farther right and farther conservative than any of the French candidates.
By a good distane.
And they didn’t even ask about guns or abortion.
Ten, 10 candidates, and seven are commies or commie wanna-bes.
Evidently my comment about Trump got sent to the bit bucket.
The French election is food for thought for Canada and for our method of choosing a Canadian leader for the Conservative Party. I am generally not in favour of changing our first-past-the-post system federally (note:France) and have expressed my personal disdain for the method chosen to select a leader for our party.
As I said to one candidate who called, the current method, with 14 candidates, is a crap shoot! WE NEED FEEDBACK BETWEEN VOTES! I have my #1 and my #2 is sort-of a “I like you, but you do not have a prayer”. I am incapable of figuring out a strategy beyond that, and people I have spoken to at HQ agree. This process SUCKS! I can not even figure out which stage and how the ridings fit in with my vote, so I am very angry and have donated less than last year, despite increased beggings. I do not know who planned this nightmare, but they should be fried or fired.
As well, I call upon all candidates who do not have a prayer to back out NOW before the last debate!!!!!!! I am not an O”Leary fan, but he is right on the point that: 14 candidates can not have a debate. That said, people who take the football and go home can not ever build a team!
End of Rant
Marxist irony in post form.
Please explain to us how you think the ranked ballot will work for selecting the new Conservative leader. My understanding is that we list our top 10 picks from #1 to #10, but I’m not clear on how the ballots are counted to pick the leader.
My point exactly. No one can understand what the outcome will be for the conservative leader election, and ranked ballots do not work.
