  10. Actually, it’s even worse than that.
    If a Buddhist refers to his god, in Chinese or Japanese or English, he says “Buddha”, not “God.” That is his god.
    Great Britain and the U.S., as well as other English speaking countries, are traditionally Christian. When someone says God in English, he means the God of the Christian Bible. Usually, when someone does not mean that, he will take care to notice the difference, using
    terms such as Supreme Being, Creator of the Universe, or even capitalized Random Chance. If he means the god of the Islamic religion and the Koran, he will take care to say “Allah” not “God”. For instance, if a Muslim is talking about his beliefs, he will make sure the audience knows that he is talking about the god of Muhammad.
    So the English translation of “Allahu Akbar” is actually “Allah is Greater”, leaving no question as to its intended meaning. I would have no trouble with the AP using that translation.

  11. Laughed out loud when I heard this story on CKOM news yesterday. After telling of the random killing, and the shouting of “Allahu Akbar” the announcer informed us (with a straight face, I assume) that the police had issued a statement saying that the killings were not terrorist related.
    And they wonder why we don’t believe anything they say anymore…. the AP, many of the authorities……
    As long as ISIS does not issue official membership cards, there are no terrorists, I guess.

    To be honest I don’t think we have the right to stand in their way on this.
    Blacks have already won their hard earned rights to their own black colleges, newspapers, TV networks, radio, etcetera…..who the hell are we to stop them from going all the way with restaurants, bathrooms or their own State. With their own wall.

  14. “Allahu Akbar” doesn’t translate neatly into English because Arabic doesn’t have comparative and superlative forms, only one form that can mean either “greater” or “greatest” depending on context. In the absence of any comparison, “Akbar” usually equates to “supreme” or “greatest”.
    All Muslims generally address God as Allah regardless of the language they use. However, Arabic-speaking Christians also say Allah when referring to God in Arabic. That’s because, er, the Arabic word for God is – Allah.
    Though the statement “Allahu Akbar” contains nothing contradictory to either Christian or Jewish belief, it is an inherently Islamic formulation. What does that mean? It means anyone who exclaims it is a Muslim.

  16. “Allah” does not translate to “god”. Allah is the name of the Muslim god. To Muslims, he is the only god and therefore they make no distinction. That said, it would be equally wrong to translate “Krishna” or “Baal” to “god” in English.
    Akbar also does not translate to “great”, but rather “greater”. For Allah to be greater, he must be greater than someone else.
    In practice, a proper translation teasing out these subtleties would be “The Muslim god named Allah is greater than your god(s).”

    One last time: the word for “God” in Arabic is “Allah”, a contraction of “al-ilah” (roughly “the god” i.e., the one god).
    Unsurprisingly, the Semitic languages all share related forms for “god”: Arabic “ilah”, Syriac “alaha” and Hebrew “el”.
    The rest of your posting is a nonsense, particularly “a proper translation teasing out these subtleties would be ‘The Muslim god named Allah is greater than your god(s).'”
    Incidentally, if you’re Muslim – or for that matter, Christian or Jewish – God doesn’t have to be “greater than [any other] god(s)” simply because those other god(s) don’t exist.

  20. I lived in North Africa and the Middle east for many years, never learned Arabic, but enough for simple phrases. I will say that common Arabs see and use the word Allah simply as God and a social reference, there’s nothing more intellectually involved for the common “man on the street”. That’s what matters in all practical interpretations here.
    In fact they believe that we all believe in the same “One God”, the problem for Islam/ Arabs is HOW Christians interpret and worship “God”. Or lack of it. Christ is considered a prophet in Islam. The same goes for Sunni verses Shia and look what they do to each other.
    ** Disclaimer ahead of time for the SDA Browbeaters – I am not an “Islam lover”, just pointing out facts as my decades of hands on experience with Arabs dictates.     As Carl von Clausewitz had succinctly put it: “War is the continuation of politics by other means.” No mention of religion there.
    Religion is the stated reason, the actual reason being libido dominandi — the will to power, the desire to dominate, the lust for government.

    Xenophobia and the made up “Progressive” political distortion “Islamophobia” are not the same thing. Neither are cultural value systems that represent Islam that so many are accused of being phobic towards.
