  1. Abraham Lincoln had that song played at his second inauguration, which took place shortly before the Confederacy surrendered at Appomattox. It apparently was one of his favourite tunes.

  2. Very important election in the Netherlands tomorrow. Geert Wilders and his Party for Freedom ( Partij voor de Vrijheid, PVV) may win.
    World is watching.
    Wilders has guts.

  3. I watched a documentary on CNN. The topic?? Vladimir Putin.
I had prepared a comment however the blog administrator held it back, and given my experiences in the past, the post is rarely released in spite of the fact that there wasn’t anything derogatory in my post.

PS: This is supposed to be a site where free speech is encouraged. I comment on several other sites and have never had problems, except at CBC.Ca. What gives here??

  4. The blog is monitored by an automated keyword filter to stop spam as well as profanity. Too many links, the use of common words used in adverts, and in your case the word “on_line” kicked the filter. There are a number of innocent words that will get your comment held back.
The real life blog administrator is often working, or away from the computer, and doesn’t get around to checking for trapped comments. Sometimes they get auto-deleted before she sees them, or she just plain forgets. Don’t take it personally.

  5. Last night, the ”Reader Tips” feature was a documentary on a day in the life of of the Wood Mountain Saskatchewan Wheat Pool elevator, filmed back in 1981. The producer of the video was the National Film Board of Canada. I was quite surprised to learn that the elevator has now been demolished. (2014) It had been built in 1928.
When they ripped the CPR tracks out a few years ago, the Village of Wood Mountain had kept the elevator, and the tracks within the Village limits as a historical site. Sadly, the elevator is now gone. It was one of the few that were still standing.

  6. I’ve always kept an eye on the Temperature in Canada’s far north. The greens are claiming that global warming is threatening the ice fields, glaciers etc in that region.
Eureka Station is located at Lat. 79°59’21.000″ N, Long. 85°56’02.000″ W
Minimum Temp. on March 09-2017 was -50.5°C.
I believe this has broken a 50 year record, although the data is not yet officially posted.
And this was NOT on CBC!!

  7. Your link provides a model for the average temperatures for the Arctic.
If the Arctic was as warm as this model indicates why is there still ice left in the Arctic Ocean?

  8. Girl Guides of Canada playing politics? They cancelled all trips to the US. Shame on them.

  11. I started watching that. It seemed like pure propaganda. They are still fighting the recent election, and if you were not paying attention, you would be seduced into thinking that Russia was responsible for the Wikileaks material, and poor Hillary the victim — they were not. Characteristically, there is little interest in the Obama spying on Trump claim. Surely this story deserves some investigation.

  13. “Great song, but nobody does it better than Joan Baez!”
Wholeheartedly agree! I’m a long-time Baez fan, regardless of her politics. And on that note, one could hardly accuse her of being a “white supremacist” or “racist” so that certainly makes a mockery of any “progressive” criticism of the song.
Baez’s masterpiece is “Diamonds and Rust”.

  14. Little interest in the Obama wiretapping could mean they either think it’s too silly to bother with or they fear there may be something to it. Whatever, it needs to be checked into.

  15. I believe it us the latter — they fear there so something to it and understand that if proven it us far worse than Watergate. Unfortunately, the incident does not fit their narrative : “Obama good; Trump bad.”. They will hide this and hope it goes away. Something that puzzles me is how the media could be so one-sided in their thinking. They are like a bunch of lemmings, but ultimately, such obvious group-think undermines their credibility.

  16. Hi SDAers,
I don’t know if you picked up on the central message of Kate’s Reader Tip but it is all about whether or not, in the very near future, if we will be able to listen to this song on the airwaves. For if they can remove the Confederate Flag from the “General Lee” of the Dukes of Hazzard TV show, and cause the Stars and Bars to be permanently lowered from State Legislatures across the South what can they not do?
I’m just waiting for this other shoe to drop.
    Yours in Christ,
    Niall from Winnipeg

  18. Yes, I tend to think it’s the latter too. Democrats seemed too desperate to install Hillary and her Billy Boy into the White House, what were they afraid of if they lost? Also the very fact they can’t accept the result of the election, still protesting even though their whines are getting weaker, Crazy stuff.

  19. Two new public opinion polls underscore the concerns Canadians have about Muslim integration and immigration in Canada.
First of all, Forum Research has found that only 14% of people support M-103, Liberal MP Iqra Khalid’s anti-discrimination motion that singles out Islamophobia.
The majority of respondents instead want the wording changed so that it either doesn’t single out an individual religion, or names all of them. …
Clearly Canadians don’t care what their betters think. They reject this motion and we don’t blame them. The Liberals should have taken the laurel leaf extended by numerous Conservative MPs and revised its wording.
Meanwhile, a poll by Montreal-based firm CROP shows a full 75% of Canadians support some form of anti-Canadian values screenings for new immigrants to Canada….
The CROP poll also reveals 25% of Canadians support a ban on Muslim immigration. While we don’t support such a ban, this significant percentage highlights a troubling reality within Canadian public opinion.

  20. Yes, we have no warming:
“According to John Coleman, the founder of the Weather Channel, global warming is about as true as Hillary Clinton’s Benghazi testimony.”
In a series of tweets and emails he sent to Al Gore and various Democratic supporters and organizations, he called out climate alarmists with a barrage of facts based on actual science and not wishful thinking.”
As it turns out, if you chart global temperatures back into the ’70s, there are absolutely no signs of global warming.”
Imho, an excellent summation about the genesis of this political junk science fiction and how it was sustained by con artists & taxpayer $billions.

  21. The trend of average global temperature measured over the past 8000 years since the Holocene Optimum has been cooling.
The trend of average global temperature measured over the past 400 years since the Little Ice Age has been warming.
The trend of average global temperature measured over the past 20 years shows no significant change.
Pick whichever time frame supports the political agenda you’re dealing with, the planet doesn’t care. Neither do earth scientists who are not beholden to any political masters.
The inescapable if unfashionable conclusion is that the human use of fossil fuels has been causing the greening of the planet in three separate ways: first, by displacing firewood as a fuel; second, by warming the climate; and third, by raising carbon dioxide levels, which raise plant growth rates.

  22. Get this: Jasper AB man charged with assault over bullying incident at elementary school. Apparently after trying to get the school/rcmp to deal with the local bullies buddy went over to the arena and tuned up a coupla punks. Result? Buddy is the one who gets charged.
The school? Did nothing. The rcmp? Well you know what they did the cowards.

  25. That would have been an initial response — Later I am sure Jackie realized Oswald was framed, and that the real perps were Johnson and the CIA. CIA is still at their dirty business of undermining democracy.

  26. Yup, that’s pretty much what went down. The last of the Warren Comn files will be ‘unsealed’ in ’28, when presumably all those involved will be dead.

  27. “Baez’s masterpiece is “Diamonds and Rust”.”
Only in so far as it gave Judas Priest a base to work from to create a pretty good song despite the scientific illiteracy inherent in the lyrics.

  28. I recently viewed an online tribute to Jerry Manuel and the Band. In it one fellow described The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down as like an epiphany for him. That description rang so true for me. Less than six months prior to viewing this video I had reacquainted myself with their music from a greatest hits CD given to me by a friend. I was playing it on a recent road trip. After Dixie had played one of my fellow travellers asked me about the line “raising Cain”. I told him what “raising Cain” meant. I guess I’d never listened closely to the lyrics. When I got home I went on the internet to look at them and learned it wasn’t “raising Cain”, it was “you can’t raise a Caine back up when he’s in defeat”. Looking at the rest of the lyrics, for the first time, I realized what a story they were telling. Not a story like Neil Young told in Southern Man, replete with all the stereotypes we’re familiar with, but a story from the other side. And not a story of evil but a story of suffering and pride and tragedy. Further Internet searches revealed that whilst writing the song, Robertson and Helm were in and out of their local library in upstate New York often, researching the writing of this piece. After discovering this I think of The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down as Levon Helm and Robbie Robertson’s song on the Civil War worthy of scholarship.
