CPC Leadership

Five candidates playing to win. The rest…not so much. Not that being a bright light of economic liberty, the rear-guard of social beliefs, representing the NDP wing, or a sober second thought about immigration will mean much if those ideas don’t enthuse the voters of certain electoral district rich provinces.

10.10 The election of the Leader shall be by way of a direct vote of members in every electoral
district, as follows.
10.10.1 Each member of the Party will have one vote.
10.10.2 Each electoral district will be allocated 100 points.
10.10.3 Leadership candidates will be assigned a point total based on their percentage of
the vote in each electoral district.
10.10.4 To win the leadership, a candidate must obtain a majority of points from across
the country.
10.10.5 Voting will be by preferential vote (single transferable ballot).

I don’t know how many candidates we’ll have on our ballot, I think last time was two, but I can’t remember.

(Does anyone much care about Canadian politics anymore? I’m not that sure I do; the dreary predictability of it all almost makes you want a Trumpian figure to come along and blow up all our sanctimonious notions about ourselves and the Dominion. When I look around at what’s on offer, I’m reminded of the sarcastic remark about politicians and their promises from a British officer I worked with in the Balkans: “More of the same – only better!”)

  2. My guess is that there could be three or four candidates on the ballot as there is quite a diverse ideological range reaching from liberal lite, to a mild Trumpette, to almost libertarian.
JJM, it does seem that it is all useless considering the Liberal/Laurentian Elite cabal running this country.

  3. I have to admit, I feel much the same way.
Without a quality conservative who recognizes the evils of political correctness and is willing to call out the liberal-activist media, where are we Canadian deplorables to look for hope?

  4. Ken,
As one who was involved with Reform from the beginning I do not know how any real conservative could have a positive outlook. The fundamental tenants of Reform are pretty much gone. The West has been put back in its’ place. We went through the last election with little debate about the issues that face the country. The education system, media and bureaucracy are controlled by progressives. Progressives are in control of the Liebels, Dippers and I suggest the CPC.
Political philosophy has always been weak across the board but particularly within conservatism. I quit my Board position on a riding association when the CPC HQ systematically destroyed the bottom up movement. Harper never developed a process whereby members could be involved in developing the party grassroots. Top down was safer and the beginning of the end. I refer back to philosophy and conviction.
I do not contribute to the CPC anymore. I will contribute to any individual who has my convictions but that is all. Our once very strong riding association is a shambles. I have received ONE contact since the last election, asking for MONEY. I would suggest that the flow of money to the CPC is probably shrinking and that is why Harper was rolled out the other day talking about is ongoing support.
What is the alternative? Canada’s economy has many fundamental weaknesses. We are price takers and yet spend like we create wealth through innovation. The social cost of running Canada will eventually cause a serious fiscal crisis. IMHO it is the only process which will change the attitudes of the majority of Canadians. Currently it is a fools paradise.

  5. Michael Chong is an embarrassment. He’s the Kasich in this race. The fact he even has a snowball’s chance at this stage speaks volumes to the party’s weakness and ineffectiveness
Why isn’t he flying the NDP flag, its far more his stripes

  6. Anyone playing an amiable “Music Man” role can make the appropriate sounds and win any fed or
prov Conservative party leadership in Canada with the aid of a few noisemakers.
It is what they start selling(out) to win a general election that is of great concern to most
people trying to trust them enough while hoping to avoid being swindled one more time.

  7. Was at a leadership meeting/supper with four of these wanna be’s last night. Every one of them was a Red Tory without an actual conservative bone in their body. Leitch and Bernier were not present. The speeches were obviously tuned to appeal to a room full of rich farmers looking to be assured their government imposed monopolies weren’t touched. Since I don’t think another Quebecer is the way to go, and since Leitch is hated by the media and leftists with a red hot passion, she currently gets my vote. These Red Tories are too dumb to realize that the western democracies are currently turfing lefty politicians and policies out the window. Canada will follow as they always have, yet these bozos still think their only chance is by running on leftist policies. Should one of them prevail, Trudeau will bury them as wanna be Liberals just like Wynne will do to Brown. Conservative governance doesn’t look too healthy right now because of the complete lack of talent in our benches.

  8. I don’t think Kevin O’Leary has decided yet if he is going to run…He is the front runner in all polls. If he runs, he’s got my vote.
O’Leary would not cave to the MSM, just like Trump does. We need an outsider business person to break the mediocrity up here. I think the silent majority Canadians are now ready to rock the Status Quo. Blame it on cumulative factors: Weak economy + high energy costs (Taxes) along with endless environmental BS impeding growth and with bad leaders like Wynne, Notley, Trudeau running the show; it is time IMO.
I truly hope O’Leary runs…A perfect match to the Donald.
MAKE CANADA GREAT AGAIN! O’Leary 2019.

  9. I have a feeling that this time Joe Clark is going to win the nomination. Maybe not Joe Clark per se, just an unknown that nobody knows enough about to dislike.
It’s not my vote. I quit the party years ago. Conservative fundraisers were way too harassing and I couldn’t take it anymore.

  10. “MAKE CANADA GREAT AGAIN! O’Leary 2019.”
O’Leary. A trumpian Mini-Me wannabe…just another rich pink Liberal out of Montreal.

  11. I wouldn’t dismiss Bernier because he is from Quebec just as I have no patience for CPC brain trustees who dismiss westerners for strategic purposes. The greater problem is the overall national lack of principles, period. At best, conservatives are fatally compromised libertarians and at worst, progressives with less energy than the other three parties. Add social conservatives to the mix and you have a microcosm of the overall Canadian political landscape all within just one of the 4 major federal parties. If conservatives are to ever form a governing party again they must discover the notion of differentiation. The Party of all things to all people is simply mush. The Liberals excel at mush and can always position themselves just a little to the left (more free shit) of the already left of centre Conservatives in keeping with the overall progressive Canadian culture. Besides, they have the Court eunuch media in their pockets. If conservatives think that they can pull the culture towards the principled side then they should have a leader with principles. That would likely best be Bernier but don’t expect it to happen before the next election.
After a few more years of ruin from the Spawn, the power people behind the LPC will orchestrate the knives to dump him. Until that happens all conservatives can do is oppose and prepare. That is the time to differentiate.

  12. “As one who was involved with Reform from the beginning I do not know how any real conservative could have a positive outlook.” I agree. I have sent a few bucks to Leitch, but nothing to the CPC since the election. They pulled a Mulroney on us.
scar, I’m afraid you probably right. The overall membership will probably opt for a Liberal Lite.

  13. Hope Trudeau gets the same results from his present trek across the country to meet the people, see how they’re doing. how the middle class is growing.

  14. As with most of you I feel that I’m a Canadian that has no true representative in Parliament that espouses my beliefs. I have held conservative views my whole life, among these a basic belief that holds accountability above all else, unfortunately this belief has been and is being eroded on a daily basis in this country. The Canadian culture that was forged in the First World War and then annealed in the Second War has been corroded to the point of extinction by the multiculturalism mantra that has been foisted on us by Liberal propaganda and a large part of that program is the lack of accountability. This mindset has infected our whole political system and now I fear that there is no reversal to this course. I once held hope when the Reform Party appeared on the scene and that hope was reinforced by the accomplishments of the Harper government. Now with the Liberals back in power I truly fear for this country’s future. We are now the Butt of a joke on the International stage and there is no-one in the country that has the fortitude to propose a plan to return accountability to this country.

  15. I also don’t see much in the CPC band of leadership candidates, prefer Leitch, but she hasn’t a hope against Trudeau, even our local (former) CPC MP admits that.
Bernier might be the best hope to campaign against Trudeau and make him look like the verbal stumblebum he really is ina debate,in either language.
O’Leary isn’t Trump, he’s closer to Ignatieff,a Canadian who lives and works in the USA,calls himself an American, and figures the top job might look good on his resume.
We aren’t at the position the USA is in,where millions are out of work, where whole regions have no chance economically (except the Maritimes but they seem to like their welfare status)and inner cities that have become third world hellholes.
So, no, this socialist paradise isn’t ready for a Trump, yet. Maybe by 2019 Trudeau will have destroyed our economy so completely we will be looking for a straight talking non-pc leader, but it isn’t O’Leary, a liberal-lite American.
Maybe the CPC should invite Nigel Farage to move to Canada.

  16. O’Leary’s got my vote. A smart businessman outside the establishment. Trump is showing how good non-politicians can run a government. It can be done. I think he’s going to run. I think O’Leary would drain Canada’s swamp.

  17. O’Leary is going to have to exhibit, champion, and defend some high profile conservative causes like opposing the constant Liberal assault on firearms owners, now done through their uniformed political police, before he gets my support. Just being a fiscal champion and smart businessman is not enough for me.
    Don, I could support Nigel.
Darrel Bricker and John Ibbitson were wrong when the wrote the book, “The Big Shift”. The Liberal establishment also known as Laurentian Elite were not defeated with the Harper days as they maintain in the book, but have retaken Canada through the facade of a pretty face and this time they mean to maintain control indefinitely.

  18. Liz J: I hope the middle class people go to his meet and greet and let Turdo know how they are truly doing!! A few BOO’s from the crowd regarding the Carbon Tax, would certainly make me feel great! I’m pretty sure Turdo’s people will vet all people that attend these meet and greet, they will not be spontaneous meetings. More selfies coming, I think the bloom is coming of the rose.

  19. More or less in agreement with you, but I wouldn’t dismiss Bernier. He has an uphill battle against entrenched interests but has a charisma that the others lack.
And don’t get me going about the unannounced CBC candiadate whatshisname.

  20. He wouldn’t cave to the media because he is in total agreement with them. Outside of fiscal policy, he is totally liberal.

  21. Of the five listed in the piece, It’s only Bernier that I think can do a decent job.
Chong is such a cuckservative as to be completely pointless. Leitch is absurd Trump mini-me and cynically so. Trost is interesting but basically a Stockwell Day figure. Peterson advocated a 9% GST…so no thanks.

  22. Preferential balloting in the Conservative leadership process, makes the electoral reform debate look hypocritical.

  23. “O’Leary is going to have to exhibit, champion, and defend some high profile conservative causes … Just being a fiscal champion and smart businessman is not enough for me.”
Exactly and amen. Nothing to add here.

  24. Please only vote for the candidate that you actually want and no one else. The ranked balls make it pretty easy for the third most liked person to win, as long as they were on enough people’s ballots as second or third choices.

  25. I agree with Kyla – a ranked ballot could give us a Dion. Vote for only 1 person.
It is important to screen out all liberals in blue t-shirts. The only one who might sell nationally is Maxime. Kevin with no French is a serious problem, but he might be good in the race, as he has media attention, as long as he does not attack other candidates; I am just not sure that he could run the country or that he is conservative. Kelly Leitch has some good ideas, but she may have difficulty attracting sufficient voters east of the Manitoba border or even west of the Rockies.
