Christmas Day

Sixty-four members of the ensemble, including director Valery Khalilov, were heading from Sochi to Russia’s air base in Syria to perform a New Year’s concert for troops when their plane crashed into the Black Sea on Sunday. All 92 people on board are presumed dead.

On the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Soviet Union. Here is the Red Army Choir performing Silent Night. May they Rest In Peace.

  5. I remember that Gorbachev’s speech to the U. S. S. R. was being broadcast by a cable TV news channel–CNN, I think.
    I went over to the shortwave receiver I had at the time, switched it on, and found a Radio Moscow frequency. I knew that history was being made and I wanted to hear at least part of that speech live and direct from overseas.

    the “archipelago” of islands across the vast expanse of the United States that carried the vote for Hillary Clinton during the election – also happens to be a ring of the liberal cities that:
    a) have exploded with crime, riots and unrest
    b) have provided sanctuary for millions of illegal immigrants that have destabilized the country
    c) are going bankrupt and will be unable to fulfill pension obligations, or pay their share of social security, welfare, etc.
    d) have been foremost in advocating gun control, and ensuring that only criminals and police have guns, while 2nd Amendment arm-bearing citizen have flocked to the rural areas where their rights are not generally restricted
    e) will be the first places to be become unstable during any major crisis – as soon as grocery store shelves go empty. Martial law will be the only way to maintain stability, and that will come at a further price to liberty.
    f) will be the first place to line up for FEMA camps and beg for food, shelter and rations, again, at a further price to liberty

  11. So sad – and a great loss as they were really good singers. Condolences to all their families and friends. It would have been rough enough that the men were leaving family celebrations to fly out for a performance in foreign lands, but to lose all the lads on Christmas day makes the loss extra rough, and future Christmasses more difficult.

BEIJING : China has passed a law that levies taxes on pollution, but ignores carbon dioxide…The National People’s Congress (NPC) standing committee passed the law, the first to tax polluters, on Sunday, less than a fortnight after a red alert for smog left more than 20 cities in the country’s northeast choking under a heavy haze. Polluters will be charged for contributing to air, water and noise pollution, according to a copy of the legislation on the NPC’s official web site.
    But CO2 did not make the list, which includes air and water pollutants such as sulfur dioxide and sulfite…

    To the CBC Ombudsman,
    I became aware of the following youtube video of a ‘This Hour has 22 Minutes’ sketch:

    My definition of racism comes from Martin Luther King. “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.” See 0:45 of the video below:

    In light of these two videos, what would the reaction of the CBC ombudsman be to the same video if the word ‘white’ were substituted with ‘black’? Or ‘yellow’? Or (you fill in any colour)? Would the CBC ombudsman consider this video to be racist and far too offensive to publish? Would the CBC ombudsman take action against the producers, staff and actors of ‘This Hour has 22 Minutes?’
    The CBC ombudsman needs to review this material and take action against this material in a colour blind manner.
    It continues to astound me that the CBC enjoys any level of funding from my tax dollars when it treats such a large portion of its audience in such a cavalier manner.
