  1. Wow, neat video Lance. It makes me wonder why everybody doesn’t drive with WINTER tires year round and why the charlatans who make and sell summer and all-season tires aren’t in jail.

  2. All seasons last much longer than winters, winters get used up much faster when it gets warm. I, like most of Canadian population do not need winter tires at all. When the weather is bad four wheel drive and a car in generally good condition with all season tires is perfectly sufficient.

  3. Lawrence Solomon (FP), on how a Trump presidency would appeal to Canadian conservatives:
“Canada’s conservatives would relish more than the lower-tax, lower-regulation, freer-market southern neighbour a Trump presidency could create. They would also relish the cultural change, principally Trump’s dismissal of political correctness, a cancer on our basic liberties of free speech and freedom of thought.”

  4. Seeing that nice BMW slide into the boards made my nuts suck up into my abdomen.

  5. Four-wheel drive won’t make a bit of difference when you hit the brakes. Only your tires will make a difference then. All vehicles have four-wheel brakes. When I used to live in Vancouver, I’d see more fancy 4WD vehicles in the ditch with the slightest dusting of snow, than any other type of vehicle.

  6. Oz, using winter tires in summer will greatly increase their wear so that they won’t be as effective in winter when you need them. They are also mushy and soft and handle worse than all-seasons in summer. Summer tires offer even better traction in summer. Just because winters are better in winter, doesn’t mean winters are also better in summer.

  7. From my experience, Vancouver and Victoria drivers have yet to acquire the magic knowledge of winter driving, besides staying the heck off the road:
    Slow down fer gawd’s sake.
All weather tires are fine in Victoria, btw, but wouldn’t try them at my old stomping grounds in the ON snow belt.

  8. AWD doesn’t help you take the turn, or make that emergency stop.
Most Canadians should swap on winter tires in winter, except for maybe those living in Toronto and Vancouver who don’t drive around much.

  10. Snow tires are legislated for Quebec drivers, no choice there, they must be on by a certain date.

  11. Seems the Federal Liberals are trying to appear as if they know what they’re doing. Good luck with that.
With their pals in Ontario dancing the jiggery-pokery refusing to admit their massive and growing debt, we should brace for the worst. Look for more and more government interference with every facet of our existence as they attempt to plug the holes in the ship. They never met a tax they didn’t like and new ones will be coming.

  12. Thanks for this. Where I live, I need studded snows, as my road is not cleared to bare pavement by the village. This was pretty interesting. Studded snows with AWD and ABS will go just about anywhere I would ever want to go in a way I couldn’t have imagined with the rear-wheel drive cars of the Seventies.

  13. 2wd vs 4wd, all season vs summer?
Eastbound Hwy 1 at Scott lake hill, -25C, F150 2wd all season spin tires trying to maintain speed limit of 110kph, while some vehicles race by.
Return trip in 4wd SUV winter tires no problem.

  14. IMHO Nokian is the only way to go – snowflake-
on-mountain rating plus 110,000 km tread life warranty plus excellent handling in every condition.

  15. The video would have been much more meaningful had the testing also included All-Weather tires. All-Weather tires have a more aggressive tread pattern and a softer compound in the centre of the tire with a harder compound and less aggressive tread pattern around the circumference. The softer compound and more aggressive tread in the centre provides grip, while the harder compound on the outer edges resist wear in turns.
I’ve been using All-Weather tires on my small AWD for several years now and the control I have is outstanding.

  16. Nokians have so so handling – quite squishy in summer. And while they last a reasonable amount of time they are VERY noisy when they become worn – to the point where I thought my wheel bearings were failing.
I find both the blizzak and the Dunlop winter sports to be better, less noisy options.

  17. Alright then … I promise NOT to drive on the San Jose Sharks ice …

  18. Nokian used to be my tire of choice. But once I started driving gravel daily, I found them to wear VERY quickly.

  19. I just want to live long enough to see a single conservative who is actually willing to fight. A conservative who ignores the name calling, ignores CBC, AND FIGHTS for the things I want. People who say things like “don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good”; I have come to the conclusion they are part of the enemy. Following their strategy has us where we are today. And they are tripling down on fail, the quadrupling down.

    Yes. Ditto here.

  22. Nokian tires have winter rating and don’t get destroyed by summer conditions so they can be used year round. However gravel will destroy them so they are only appropriate if 99% of your driving is on paved roads.

  23. It’s hard to listen to Trudeau,s pansy voiced offerings as he reads the goop handed him and doesn’t have a clue. For the first time in my memory we have a PM who really has no idea of what he speaks on any important issue affecting us whether it be economically or anything else. We are not in good hands….we are living in interesting times and it doesn’t bode well for Canada’s future.

  25. Ray and Billy:
Drive according to conditions and in Southern Ontario you do not need winter tires (nor you need them in Montreal area or Greater Vancouver and that combined means majority of Canadians). 4WD helps you maintain traction in bad weather. Have been driving without accident for decades in every weather Southern Ontario has to offer and never had a need for winter tires. For majority of Canadians they are nothing but a marketing gimmick with the added inconvenience related to storage and changes. For Quebec government they are means to collect taxes and impose another retarded regulation on people (Quebecers apparently like it long and hard).

  27. “For majority of Canadians they are nothing but a marketing gimmick with the added inconvenience related to storage and changes.”
Yes. We are living in the second decade of the 21st century and they can make tires that do it all, all year round.
They don’t because switching tires is lucrative for them and just plain fraud for us.

  28. There was a time when journalists sought the truth, with the best and most respected chosen to moderate presidential debates, who then turned to their research, which guided their inquiries at the event. Most were Democrats but you wouldn’t know it. Whom they were questioning was not the issue.
Now journalists seek “their” truth, with the best and most respected PC sycophants chosen to moderate presidential debates, who now turn to Dem talking points, which guides their inquiries at the event. Most are Democrats and you couldn’t help knowing it. Whom they are questioning is the only issue.
How the heck is Donald Trump supposed to beat that? He doesn’t just have the league commissioner down his throat looking for political phlegm, but the referees are already booked for the other side.
This is pure and simple an agreement, obvious imho, in fact a fusion of the so-called MSM (dying dinosaur is a better description) and the Dems into a force designed to do only one thing, keep Donald Trump off balance with orchestrated “scandals” so he can’t present a coherent message.
How he battles that will decide the election. For a guide to their tactics, just refer to cabin boy’s election tale of dope and derange.
Hijabs and Duffys popping up everywhere, along with a smuggler’s boy on the beach. Is there still hope for Trump? Maybe, probably not.
Assange drops a bomb on Hillary? Change the channel. He’s a bad guy and because Trump doesn’t like Snowden, well he wants to kill him, so is violent, but not anything like Hillary asking “why can’t we just drone this guy.”
Anyway (blast from the past) it was probably “cut and pasted” anyway, so didn’t “actually” happen, you know getting an ambassador killed over gun deals.
Nope, nada, and Donald doesn’t pay his taxes, that is “might have avoided” paying them for 18 years (3 years back 15 years ahead according to tax code).
IOW they haven’t the slightest clue how much income Donald Trump did or did not pay.
So what, just in case it’s “true,” Hillary must add she would never do such a thing because she loves America and is a good “businesswoman.” No?
“Clinton Campaign Admits Hillary Used Same Tax Avoidance “Scheme” As Trump.”
With the leaked 1995 Trump tax returns ‘scandal’ focused on the billionaire’s huge “net operating loss” and how it might have ‘legally’ enabled him to pay no taxes for years, we now discover none other than Hillary Rodham Clinton utilized a $700,000 “loss” to avoid paying some taxes in 2015.”
I understand she could have avoided paying taxes for 18 years. Well, did you Hillary?
C’mon Donald, refute, pivot to a salient point, contrast with her plan, repeat as necessary, issue by issue. She must keep you on the defensive to survive.

  29. Having driven with winter and summer and all season I find the most important thing is the guy or girl behind the wheel. I have driven hours at a time over icy snowy roads with nearly bald summer tires and never had a problem. I have fish tailed on ice with winter tires because I became over confident in the grip of the tires. When I drive on ice in the city I slow and stop like I am trying to stop the guy two cars back assuming he has bald tires and doesn’t see the brake lights of the car in front of him. So far I have over 45 years of accident free driving averaging 120,000 miles a year.

  30. Now Joe you shouldn’t be using your own judgement like that. You should know by now that legislation and heavy-handed enforcement, policing the kinds of tires you can install on your vehicle is the only way to stop these automobiles from skidding into each other or ending up in the ditch.

  31. Back in the day, when we lived in Vancouver, there was a snowy winter. We had winter tires on the car, so our main worry was avoiding the idiots who had no idea how to drive in that white stuff. Across Burrard Inlet, both North Van and West Van were horror shows, as vehicles whose tires couldn’t get their grip up the steep hills caused massive traffic jams. So the city councils of both cities passed a bylaw to the effect that anyone whose car got stuck and who did NOT have the proper snow tires on would be heavily penalized. The roads cleared miraculously, and there were few further problems.

  32. What you described about the Vancouver area when there was snow sounds about right.
I noticed the same thing when it snowed while I was a grad student at UBC over 35 years ago. I lived in a rented basement suite in the Endowment Lands at the time and the place where I parked my car was well below street level at the bottom of an incline. When it became apparent that I wasn’t going to make it to the top with my regular summer tires, I put on the winter grips that I had bought for my car when I lived in Alberta and it was a piece of cake after that.
Watching the Lotuslanders slipping and sliding all over the place provided me which several moments of entertainment and mirth.

  33. Meh…I’ve been driving my Duramax (8000 lbs), in winter on All Season BFG Rugged trails for near 8 years… Never ever had an issue whatsoever….a lot of that I attribute to driving with a bit of “winter” common sense…?? IE; not following too close to get one self into a dog pile..
I will say, those tires have a good amount of siping for an all season tire….impressive
