Other People’s Money

Finally running out.
If you’re getting paid for sending $0.80 electricity into a $0.10 market, best hang onto your hat, because if every other jurisdiction that’s tried this scam is any hint you’re about to get shafted. The only problem though for the Liberals is that they expected a PC gov’t to deliver the bad news.

  1. They did too little too late. They did it because they had no choice, there was and still is a crisis, people could not/cannot pay their hydro bills and it’s not just the poor, it’s the hard working middle class.
They only listen when it hits their own influx of money from the overtaxed people of Ontario. They are the worst administration ever in the history of the province. They have fixed nothing, the problem is still there, a buck tossed off bills that reach into the hundreds is an insult.
They need to be sent packing but we have nothing in place to do it,we need to push for recall legislation.

  2. Keep in mind the Liberal strategy. They know that they can’t get re-elected with Wynne as per current polls. They know that everyone, including the wealth in cottage country are getting upset about electricity prices and that it is their fault and theirs alone. So yesterday, they announced that they were removing the net-zero boundary on public service contracts with the promise that they wouldn’t throw money about (if you believe it – I don’t as it hasn’t stopped them in the past). Today, they announce a saving of 3.8 Billion by stopping any further contracts for green energy.
Does anybody else see what will happen before the next election? They are going to throw the savings (which aren’t savings at all) into the public service contracts for the sake of staying in power. They might even dump Wynne (depending on the polls at the time), but they will not stop spending or curtail the public service as it would be suicide and a concrete admission of culpability.

  3. The local rag had a story about electricity today.
A car dealership was charged $21,000 for electricity used over 31 days. Insane.
    There’s no future in Ontario.
    Screw them. Let it burn.

  4. Does Ontario have an effective opposition? If so, I haven’t seen much evidence of it. It appears that the only push back against this government is the hard wall of a fiscal crisis, a la Greece. Ontario is f*cked.

  5. What’s worse, is that manufacturers in Ontario pay a high price for power, THEN the government sells the extra power to Quebec, New York and Michigan…where their competitors are.
Reminds me of China, where they bill the family for the bullet they use to execute the prisoner.

  6. The ECO ghouls WANT to PUNISH all the middle class energy users. They WANT usurious energy prices to FORCE everyone to live like 3rd worlders. They don’t believe you should live more comfortably than some Amazonian native living in the trees. How DARE all you white people live comfortable when a single native shivers or sweats. Next, they’ll be BANNING antibiotics … cause they aren’t “natural” … and are interrupting natures usual outbreaks the cull the human population. YOU struggling middle class taxpayer and rate payer are parasites in the eyes of these Eco ghouls. It’s high time to FIGHT BACK.

  7. Does Ontario have an effective opposition?
Last I heard, the conservative party was going to solve all of Ontario’s financial problems by selling beer and liquour in Catholic schools and using the proceeds to fund madrassas.

  8. *
there was a huge ugly solar farm erected on agricultural land
in the area (hastings cty) recently. guess who one of the people
    running it is.
yup… failed liberal candidate from a couple of elections past.

  9. Wait what?
Are they really selling electricity generated by hydroelectric plants to NY and Quebec at cheap prices, and buying back electricity generated via solar, wind, and biomass from NY and PA at expensive rates?

  10. “Does Ontario have an effective opposition? ”
I don’t know, haven’t been in a church in years

  11. There’s something visceral about being booed at an innocuous event like a tractor pull in rural Ontario to really open a politician’s rose coloured sunglass covered eyes. The hate communicated was raw and with a hard winter ahead there is more than a little fear brewing amongst the farming community where “just scraping by” might be on the verge of having bragging rights for being part of the more fortunate people. The politicians have damned the torpedoes and allowed a great many of their constituents to take horrific long lasting blows to their security and livelihoods. If doctors can be sued for malpractice and CEO’s for gross negligence why can’t politicians face judgement for dereliction of duty to the well being of their constituents? This country need recall laws. I’ve said it times before and will continue to beat the drum. Canadians need to serve accountability with teeth.

  12. http://www.ieso.ca/Pages/Power-Data/price.aspx
take a look at that page, it’ll give you the wholesale price in cents per kilowatt hour. Ontario is paying between 11 and 13.5 cents per kilowatt hour for wind power, which takes priority over all other forms of electricity generation other than solar, which it is buying at between 27.5 and 80.2 cents per kilowatt hour.
There are times when the power price sinks into the negative range, where ontario pays other jurisdictions money to take our power, and then there are times when they eff up their forecasting and have to pay a ridiculous price for power as they bring online on demand generators, like natural gas.

  13. “There’s something visceral about being booed at an innocuous event like a tractor pull in rural Ontario…”
Baggies of green cow shit would have been better than visceral.

  14. Please consider this observation.
Wynne never did anything with the intent to reduce the financial burden to rate payers. If you look at her history on the energy file she has always made it very clear that making you pay more was the goal to make you “change your lifestyle”.
This goal was never a logical one it has always for her and her close circle an ideological cult.
While I concur that political strategy may have been a motivating factor in the decision, I’m suggesting it was only motivating the olp strategists.
The only reason Wynne decided to back down..for now…is a financial one. Namely that the creditors have likely advised the premier that the province is about to get another downgrade rating which equates to having to borrow from other not so forgiving sources that are in the loan business not for the return on interest but instead like to seize assets when they force you into bankruptcy.
This isn’t about what makes sense, its a reaction to a budgetary shortfall in the billions.
Yep, today she found 3 billion to keep the creditors at bay….but what about next month?

  15. I remember news reports within the past year that said the libs in Ont had a deal where excess power was “sold” to some surrounding states and provinces….note that “sold” in this case means Ontario effectively PAID the surrounding buyers to take the electricity for FREE.
I am unsure if that applied in all cases.
I want your car!….give it to me for free and pay me $5000.
    http://www.torontosun.com/2015/08/12/ontario-taxpayers-spend-200-million-on-exported-electricity-in-june .
The TV commercial with the top of folks heads exploding purple smoke applies here.

  16. and next up is the “carbon tax”. Does it make sense to keep bleeding victims until they pass out? Not at all, but they need the money and they can’t borrow it. Provinces can’t print it. So bend over because you are going to get it hard, without lube.
For history buffs, when the Roman Empire was in the final stage of collapse, the citizens welcomed the barbarians hordes into the cities to get relief from their oppressive government! Can anyone imagine that – government so demanding of tax revenues that people would rather live under barbarian rule?
We are at that stage in Offtario. the future will not be pleasant.

  17. Can the people not take up a petition to get Wynne removed? Million signatures given to the Governor General?

  18. Remember the commercials from the Wynne election campaign and how we would be in her safe hands? There is a face book group called hydro one enough is enough where people post information. This is a posting on that page from today if people want to know what the final hours of life is like in Ontario:
“Kudos to the folks in Bancroft. Really sad to hear about a 74 year old woman who was dieing and had her hydro cut off. Her son hooked up an electric fan to a car battery for the last 4 days of her life. Do we live in a 3rd world country–her bill was $300. That her electricity was cut off is frigging mind boogling. It is hard enough to be a caregiver, but should that person have to deal with hydro being cut off–really. When did I move to 3rd world country…A better Ontario…my a**.”

  19. One thing really amazing from last night’s debate was the similarity between Hillary’s rant on green energy you could almost swear she took it verbatim from the Libs in Ontario – Trump should use Ontario as an example of what not to do when it comes to “Green”.The damage is done in this province, now the bottom has to be found to teach a whole lot of people a lesson.

  20. Your August bill was only $250?
You got off easy. Super hot summer, zero rain, oh yeah.
All the rest of y’all out there laughing at Ontario, wait for the carbon tax.
And yes, for all you people wondering about the windmills.
Windmill power gets paid for by Ontario at $0.50 per kWH. At night, when the wind blows but there is no demand, that power we paid $0.50 kwh for gets sold to NY. For the going rate, $0.10 kwh. But that’s only if they want it. If they don’t want it, we pay them to take it. Nobody pulls a switch to feather the over-producing wind turbines, we get to keep paying full pop for the power that we have to then pay somebody else to take.
During the day of course, the wind doesn’t blow that much. So it isn’t “helping the environment” at all. That power in the daytime is gas/coal/nuclear, same as always.

  21. Winters coming and I have 2800 sqft to heat with electric base board here in Deplorablefalls, north of Toronto. I have had Ont Hydro bills of just under $1000/month to heat this place during the really cold months.
Wynne or that fat doofus from Winnipeg would be advised not to show their smarmy faces in this community, people are pissed.

  22. Making money the Ontario way:
Use sodium lights to generate electricity using solar panels.
You can run 24/7, it’s magic.
Pay $0.10 for power and get paid $0.80 selling it back…
    /sarc

  23. there will never be a effective opposition because most Canadians and the people of Ontario want something for nothing, they don’t give a damn who gets screwed over to get it.

  24. “Can the people not take up a petition to get Wynne removed?”
Pe’tishun: old Cree word meaning, “long list of people too scared to do anything”.
