Socialists have always been enamored of Islam; they see in it a useful source of shock troops. They always promise them (snort) greater autonomy and (giggle) religious freedom. This was the case during the Bolshevik revolution (short lived, but crucial), with Mao in China (although some of the Muslims were starting to catch on after their experience in the Soviet Union), and in Cambodia (people forget about the Muslims of Cambodia — didn’t end well for them).
Iran was really a new event: an Islamic group that used the communists to gain power and then purged them. They learned their lesson well I suppose.
