She didn’t lie, she “misremembered” and, among politicians, “misremembering” is considered to be honourable.
I would think a wee gander at that second passport would clue you in dearie, because you can bet the farm she has dual citizenship.

It’s possible to cut her a bit of slack here as a refugee she may not have had a clear view of where she came from. However, once she found out she didn’t rush to correct the fact, and conveniently threw her mother under the bus for misleading her; she only fessed up when cornered by a journalist.
It is fair to remember this woman speaks of 149 years of Canadian custom and rules regarding parliamentary voting, and how that must be put aside because Jr made a rash campaign promise. If anything this episode further reduces any credibility she had with respect to Canadian
history and institutions.

Uh, no. When my parents and I became Canadian citizens more than 50 years ago, we had to provide proper evidence of where we born, such as official government documents.
Unless the naturalization process has changed drastically since the mid-1960s, someone would have had provide similar proof for her.

IMO this woman is a piece of work. Why would she not have been asking all about her father over the years as she grew to adulthood, demanded answers from her mother? Of course there is no story here, she’s a Liberals cabinet minister, case closed.

It doesn’t matter if she knew her place of birth, the security background check has failed to clear her as a minister. She should be removed from the post immediately.

Applying for security clearance requires that one’s background over a certain number of years be checked. However, proof of citizenship and country of origin is also part of it.
It’s surprising that those details of her early life weren’t properly verified, particularly for the level of security that a federal cabinet minister would have. Either someone committed fraud or was extremely sloppy unless, of course, they were told to be, if you know what I mean.
We are so Canadian: our own “birther” scandal, in this case a 100% stone cold certainty, even admitted by the perp…and it won’t even get a blip, politically.

As a naturalized Canadian, I’m deeply offended that anyone should show such disrespect for the citizenship process. Becoming a citizen is a privilege, not a right.

If she was born in Iran, she has no choice; she’s actually an Iranian citizen whether she wants to be one or not. Iran uses the “born a citizen, always a citizen” approach.
This is why so many Iranian Canadians who head back to the old country to see family and end up in jail over there can’t rely on their Canadian passport to help them.
Check the “Be aware/Soyez au courant” notice on the last page of your own passport and you’ll understand.

It must suck coming from a culture that has no appreciation for the truth nor apparently any conception as to what truth is. Why tell the truth when a lie will work equally as well? The girls lived there for four months in late 1987 and early 1988 and for 2 1/2 years from 1993 to 1996. Herat fell to the Taliban in September 1995, which prompted her mother to try to get to Canada, where she has other family members.
