Western Feedlots Ltd.’s shareholders have decided to voluntarily wind down cattle ownership and cattle feeding operations. Western will continue to feed and market the existing cattle and after they are marketed, Western will be suspending feedlot operations. Western will not be hiring employees, or purchasing feed grain or feeder cattle after that time. Western will continue farming operations for the foreseeable future. Western’s shareholders chose this course of action due to the current high risk/low return environment in cattle ownership, which is inconsistent with shareholder objectives. In addition to strong headwinds in the cattle industry, the poor political and economic environment in Alberta are also contributing factors to this decision. Western would like to thank all our employees, suppliers and customers for their years of dedication and support and their continued understanding and cooperation.

Between the low fat campaign and building such a high cost system people can’t afford to buy beef, this isn’t surprising. Too many parasites between the producer and the consumer.
Beef consumption has been dropping every year. The present political climate is just the straw that broke the camel’s back.
Everything is going according plan. Or as some say here it not a bug it’s a feature.
Enjoy your Solent Green
I guess it will help meet carbon targets. Not much being said about all the money Enbridge just invested in the U. S . We will be starving , freezing in the dark , but the environment will be saved !
lucky they voted Nutley in, just in time, now with the minimum wage going up out there, all will be good.:-))
It’s not “just” the straw, it is the straw.
The party has no interest in the welfare of this industry.
The iconic industry of Alberta. Effing tragic.
Meanwhile the NDP are celebrating “We’re cutting Methane emissions!”
Well folks ….I hate to say it but I will finally be able to afford not one but several vacant apartments downtown Calgary in no time….lol keep it up noteley
This shouldn’t be surprising. Bill 6 showed that the Dippers hate farmers and ranchers. The thought that someone could make a living without the state meddling in every detail is abhorrent to them.
Comrade Notley will, of course, be delighted as will that twit Rod Loyola, that worshiper of Hugo Chavez. Alberta is becoming more like that socialist paradise Venezuela each time something like this happens.
Oh, and if Albertans *don’t* re-elect the commies, the world of “Road Warrior” will be the result:

Maybe I should start talking to rivers to prevent this from happening:

The comments on the Calgary herald article are great. A couple of NDP apologists and a whole lot of angry Albertans
My rent hasn’t gone up in recent years. I guess the landlord doesn’t need the extra money as all the new apartments it “needed” are all built. (Yeah, I know that’s a hokey explanation, but that’s the excuse that was used here in Edmonton–that and “market forces”, whatever they were. The thing is, I don’t think there ever were any new units under construction.)
This time, though, I was able to negotiate my rent and I got a better deal this time. I’m paying a lot less now than I did a year ago.
That Alberta NDP government doesn’t care about the interests of the steakholders.
LoL @ steakholders…appropriate, I suppose 🙂
The commie government’s plan to implement Agenda 21 is working as planned in Alberta.
For which Red Rachel and her politburo expect to be amply rewarded, no doubt. Commissar Soros may turn out to be quite generous to them.
That is exactly what they are doing. I saw a comment some time ago from an insider/supporter that she and Nenshi were meeting on how to implement Agenda 21. Also, she had no real plan when she was elected. They simply adopted Agenda 21 as a blueprint. Albertans are screwed — and the rest of Canada not far behind.
So the consequences of Atlas Shrugs become a reality. Companies move to better, more hospitable territories OR they disappear completely. The government elites wash their hands and claim no responsibility for unforeseen results (because they didn’t listen, couldn’t understand and had other agendas that weren’t sustainable in the long term). Quelle surprise! The more things change, the more they are the same as they have always been. Ronald Reagan was absolutely correct when he said that the scariest statement in English is: I’m from the government and I’m here to help”.
No problem. Ol’ Raiche’ll just create some new government jobs and make vegetarianism mandatory.
Alberta’s Agriculture Minister Oneil Carlier professes to be disappointed by Western Feedlot’s business decision. Just one more incompetent in the whole pack of them.
One other nail in the coffin for farmers & ranchers in Alberta is the infamous and hated Bill 6 (Increased Protection for Farm & Ranch Workers Act) that was rammed through without consideration for or consultation by farmers or ranchers. “Shoot first and ask questions later”.
stradivarious >
“Beef consumption has been dropping every year…”
Not in China, just say’n.
…and Atlas shrugged….
I think that vegans are really degans as everything that they eat is produces with diesel fuel.
