the test will be damage to reputation and loss of income – not a huge hurdle for a firearms retailer or lawyer specialising in that domain – PLUS admission of willful neglect/misrepresentation should make the case. freedom of speech weighs heavy in favour of the social justice artists. it will be an interesting case.

I think you’re right. It’s very hard to shoehorn editing — dishonest as this editing was — into the definition of defamation (“a false statement about a man to his discredit” — Scott vs. Sampson). The solution, as you say, is to starve the minotaur by not walling into the labyrinth.
