An elite American Special Operations force has captured a significant Islamic State operative in Iraq and is expected to apprehend and interrogate a number of others in coming months, ushering in a new and potentially fraught phase in the fight against the extremist Sunni militant group.

Defense Department officials said that the United States had no plans to hold the detainee or others indefinitely, and that they would be handed over to Iraqi or Kurdish authorities after they have been interviewed. If you won’t kill your enemies then you can’t win the war.
The Kurds will be a whole lot less likely to treat the prisoners with the kindness and delicacy that the ‘Mer-cans would. There is no love lost between those groups, and it costs a whole lot less for an out-of-line prisoner to have 2 ounces of lead for breakfast than to squander the food supply.

The US Marines (in a war they weren’t allowed to win) used to interrogate the VC while flying them around in pairs in helicopters. One would be asked for intel and when he refused, he was given flying lessons while his partner watched. The second interrogation was almost always productive. Combatants taken prisoner should never be taken out of theatre and warehoused indefinitely as was done at Gitmo. If you are not prepared for such conduct, don’t go to war and in the case of the Islamic wastelands unless prepared to run and administer the nations conquered for a century or two stay the hell out.

First time I’ve read of a sensible policy regarding POW’s. I remember when our Canadian Forces were excoriated by the Liberals and NDP for handing Afghan prisoners over to the Afghans.
